Well a couple years ago my father bought a bugzapper. Those things flocked to it and near the end of the summer they dug up the ground next to our porch and left to mate. So in about 5 more years, there is going to be thousands of those things pouring out from our porch.
cicadas make nice sounds :(
Was the same for me when I lived in Chicago, Illinois. Granted they weren't gigantic flocks like the other posters in this thread claim (it was more like a handful) but they were still fucking there.
I don't know where in Chicago you were at. But from 70miles west of that shit hole, we did have flocks. Nothing likes going to chicago anyways, smells weird and too many angsty hobos.
One of these fuckers crawled up under my shirt. Scared the shit out of me.
Fortunately, they've all died down here.
I like the noise Cicadas make. It sets the ambiance of the beginning of summer.
In Chicago, there seems to be yearly cicadas that aren't TOO annoying. But like the OP said every 7-17 years there comes a huge invasion when some come out of hibernation.
The worst part is their shedded skin, littering the trees.
op's got it wrong
it's the junebugs that are fucking annoying as hell
I love these things. Its like natures version of the kid with downs syndrome, the June bug! They fly like a southwest airlines pilot, and they run into things to make a nice crack noise.
They just remind me of that kid in highschool that used to wear the helmet everyday and run into walls... maybe he thought he was a junebug too.
In Philippines, as children, we would take large cicada's and june bugs, and put toothpicks in-between their wings. They would become hella-infuriated and then they'd fight each other.
I don't hear any yet. Are they coming? :tinfoil:
Ugh, these things are here non-stop in Arizona.
Though honestly nobody cares, like OP says, they're just background noise.
I once found one of their shells stuck to my garage door :tinfoil:
I have a solution.

Yep, I live in Chicago too, every single summer.
Remember a few years ago when the Cicada Horde (17 Year Cicadas) came out and there were like 100 Cicadas on every tree?
This is pretty much how I search for mates, too. Once every four years or so, I'll walk outside and start screaming until somebody has sex with me. Sometimes I have to scream for a long time.
Cicadas piss me off. Everytime they roll around, one inevitebly slams into my face at high speeds when I least expect it, and one of the last things I want to happen during an evening walk is to be blitzed by giant bugs.
OP, you've been posting alot in GD lately.
Everywhere in Tennessee. The local police had fliers around warning of hearing damage...
In NYC, around July, it's all you hear. Occasionally, you see a few of them on the ground around trees, slowly dying.
They always scared the living shit out of me. They even look like they're gonna murder you while you sleep.
i stepped on one once, or maybe near
fucker screamed at me
might have been a locust, though

I know. I'm already working on a gigantic mega-thread that I'll post some day in the future regarding the independence of Quebec. I'm going to wait a while though, as not to flood the forums. I want to make it as good and informative as possible.
Fire + Cicadas.

You know why? They DON'T make a sound.
If you're living in the Midwestern United States, then you've probably heard these proud and noble beasts.

proud and noble beasts
wow they're just bugs bro lol
Come to Alaska bro's, we got plenty of room up here and no Cicadas.
I love that in Britain there are literally no dangerous or even annoying wild animals at all.
[editline]31st May 2011[/editline]
Well except for the occasional adder or escaped panther.
All I can hear when I go outside is this loud SSSSSSSHHHHHHH sound, it's intense.
I like them though, they're really cool and kind of cute. They just sit there and don't give a fuck because they're fucking Cicadas.

These are better. They eat other insects. They're also fun to play with. Look how adorable it is. :3:
I dislike bugs, too much Starship Troopers influence :)
