I have a question for you car gurus here, how would the reliability of a late model volvo (namely the s60) compare to the reliability of japanese brands like honda or toyota?
Thanks

should be pretty good as long as it's been maintained well
St. Louis always gets pretty cheap gas for some reason. It's $2.89 right now though. E85 is only $2.69.
That's a good price but 85 Octane? That's crazy low, not sure about you cars, the ECU is obviously tuned for it but my car would run like a cement mixer on that kinda fuel, seriously down on power. Has to be minimum 95, 99 is recommended for best performance. Comes at a hefty price though and not all petrol stations have it at the pumps.

e85 is 85% ethanol

I'll take that back then. This isn't conventional fuel then? Is it the same as Biofuel?
In the UK we have a RON rating, dictating the octane rating of fuel, the lowest I've ever seen is 88 (at the shoddiest looking petrol station in Brazil) and thought E85 meant it had an octane rating of 85 which would be poor quality fuel.
I fill up with 91 Octane fuel... shit's cheap.

E85 is an ethanol/gasoline blend with 85% ethanol (corn) which has an octane rating around 105. Basically cheap racing fuel, although it's arguably just as good because of the cooling effect it has on the intake charge. The normal pumps we have are 87, 89, 91 or 93 and are 10% ethanol blend, or E10.
You don't magically gain power from using a higher octane. The higher octane is used in performance cars to decrease or eliminate pre-detonation, when the fuel ignites because of combustion temperatures before the spark plug goes off. So actually without changing the computer's tune, 87 octane will make the most power and get the best mileage.
Thank god for Diesel.
The Durango is probably my second favorite SUV. Dodge and Ford definitely did well on em' both.
It's disappointing that 5.0 Explorer only came with AWD and not 4 wheel.
The durango is one tank in the snow. I have some all season tires on it at the moment and I took it through about 3 feet of snow and several snow banks. Also this will sound stupid what is the difference between AWD and 4 wheel drive?

all-wheel-drive is full-time
4-wheel-drive is on part-time
awd is fine on dry pavement because it utilizes a center differential
4wd isn't good on dry pavement because it doesn't have a center diff, but it's also better on rough terrain since both axles always move at the same speed - if you're getting traction with your rear wheels, your front wheels will turn and vice versa

That may be the case but I've noticed a definite change of power delivery if I have 1/4 tank of 95 compared to 1/4 tank of 99. The VTECs run higher compression, mines running 11:1 which would surely run into problems being ran on 87RON fuel? Engine knocking or even knackering me engine completley.

If your computer detects knock, it will pull timing and you'll go slower. Higher compression engines definitely should use higher octane.
[editline]7th January 2011[/editline]
You'll get no benefit from running an octane rating too high for your car though. A butt dyno is not a very good way to tell which gas makes more power. And unless you're going full throttle, the lower octane will have better driveability. Use whatever is recommend for your car.

What size tires are you running?
Another point to Prisma's info is that AWD lacks the boner-giving sound of your hubs locking.
Edit: Whoops, rated zing.

true, but most factory ecus learn to what fuel is put in. they had a test on 5th gear once, 3 cars, 99 octane and 95. obviously the family car gained nothing, luxary car gained about 5hp and the impreza gained about 30.
mine being imported from japan, i have to use as close to the 102 octane they have over there as i can, which is 99. if i put 95 in it runs like shite.
fucking hell i put 19 litres of fuel in before, that cost me 25 quid. what is going on. that's 4.18 gallons. for 38usd. that's $9 a gallon. cunting hell.

pretty much widely available/renewable race fuel

that's true but knocking at full boost and then having my shit freak out and floor all my values with a chance of blown pistons isn't what I call "learning"
Speaking about that, you ever considered the single wiper switch?
yes, but expensive at hell for nearly no better reason than original...
kinda ironic i say that since i spend thousands of dkk on new bumpers, lights and so on..
it just looks really, really cool
