Well, how is it running right now? If it is still running high, it might just need the idle screw adjusted. If there are other problems, it might need the fuel/air ratio adjusted.
Oh, I almost forgot, not sure how familiar you are with carbed vehicles, but when you first start them they will idle high until they warm up.

oooooh boy
what are you gonna do now? sell it as a "part car" as we call it here, and buy another car or keep it and use the usable parts for another kia?
Hey car forum. I need help with my mom's 1997 Subaru Imprezza 2.2L.
We were driving home last night and at a stop light the engine stalled. For no reason. (This car has never stalled EVER. It has always started perfect, drove perfect, etc..) It started right up and we drove home. The rpm's were a bit higher than usual and were fluctuating at idle. The next day it starts up fine and we drive to a store. All of a sudden, it loses power and the rpm's go to 4000 just to make it go 15 mph. It is kicking and rocking so we pulled over and had it towed to our house.
What's wrong? Nothing seems to be misplaced or damaged in the engine compartment and the check engine light wasn't on. I'm scared to start it again for fear it may die completely. :( Please help.

Maybe condensation in the fuel from frost in the tank becoming water and blending with the fuel when the car becomes warm after driving a while.
Exactly what you're describing happened when I drove a moped in the winter three years ago and that was condense
You can buy condense removers (which is roughly translated from what we call it in norway and it kinda self explanatory) and apply it direcly into the fuel tank. Should say on the bottle how much per liter of fuel you need
Naw, its still hot here in California. Didn't get below 60 F last night. And by driving it at night, I mean like 4 PM.
[editline]16th November 2010[/editline]
I would fucking kill myself if that is all it was.
ah ok, I live in freezing Norway as you see from my above post :v:
also 4 PM is kinda in the evening... not night
and well you know other stuff could cause condensation like the tank opening... thingie not being properly tightened and the car's been in the rain while that was the cause
so I'd say condensation isn't out of the question
A few things come to my mind. Could be the ICV for the bad idle, the kicking and rocking and low power sounds like its not running on all cylinders,
oh yes, check spark plugs
But how can it suddenly not run on all cylinders? I know it sounds like it is happening when the car warms up, but I don't see how it can just randomly go to 3 cylinders when it gets to a certain temperature.
[editline]16th November 2010[/editline]
One spark plug is a bit loose, could it be popping out when the engine warms up?
oh yes, check spark plugs
Rather than check the plugs, which are very hard to get to on these, try starting the car; if it doesn't idle, have some one push the gas enough so it does; and pull a plug wire out, if the engine tries to die, put it back in. Repeat that, and if you find one that does nothing after you pull the plug wire, you found the problem.
A loose spark plug is dangerous, so tighten it!

tighten it?
I can't really. It seems like the housing is broken or something.
I just started the car up for 5 seconds. It sounds just fine.
This is really strange. :(

Are you saying the hole for the plug is stripped?
5 secs? you gotta let it run and rev it and really listen closely and all that shit
that's how you check for problems
also maybe open the hood while it's running to see or hear if something you can't see or hear in the car is wrong
Guys, which one do you think is the best Porsche 911?
I think of 993.
993 GT2.
Or Rauh Welt 993
Ok. I was trying to run to the car to check for shit and then run to fp to see if any more suggestions came. But yes, I will run the car for about 5 minutes and see what happens.
I would let it run for at least 10. Five minutes isn't enough for it to come up to normal operating temp for some engines. (If when the engine is hot is the only time it does it)

Well I just took it for a spin in the neighborhood. ran good at first, got some speed on it. Then I stopped at a turn and it stalled out. I started it again. Was idling low. Ran for a while. I screwed around in it (Accelerated, slowed. repeat. and I shifted back and forth from drive/neutral) Doing this caused it to sound like it was going to stall but never did. And Im not too familiar with them, but I do know it will idle high at first. Im assuming Ill have to look in a manual to find where the idle screw would be?

Well, without actually seeing whats going on its hard to diagnose, but I think it might be getting too much/not enough fuel at lower rpms. Does it run fine if you rev it? If it does, I would start with either adding or removing fuel at lower rpms, there will be a screw for that.
But it could also just be the idle speed, but thats another area thats hard to diagnose without being there. If you start it after its warmed up and it idles low and tries to die, try tapping the gas just a little. If it smooths out with just that little added gas, than the easiest thing would be to increase the idle speed.
Seems like Subaru is stepping back in terms of visual appealing cars

looks like a corolla with a spoiler lol
i like the new look of subaru over the old look.
I never liked the look of Subarus.
