An Football star can make like 1mil a year or something, and a pathologist or a doctor have to work their asses off to get into medical school and pass and than spend more years on a medical branch they wanna master.(Excluding Pathologist.)
If the USA were gonna invest in sports don't ya think they would invest on their soccer team or something? To improve the US world rep.
Because there are a lot of sports fans and television is popular.
Sports is more than playing with a ball. It's marketing.
Sport leagues are businesses. They can afford to pay their players that much, and for doing that, it gives the people more entertainment, and more money for them in the long run.
It's a popular thing people like to do.
But your throwing money to the gutters.
Marketing and entertainment I guess, I agree it is ridiculous though.
Because it is a form of entertainment. People who participate in entertaining, on television and other type of media broadcasting, will get paid a lot.

Who is the "you" in this argument I don't pay football players

Do you?

Well Sports is something that unites people. Its also one of the factors that's helping fight obesity in America. If Children can see a future for themselves in sports they would be more inclined to do it. I mean what are the chances of someone getting a sports scholarship if there was no money in sports.
Most human animals are painfully stupid and needs something to occupy their time that doesn't require much thought.
Watching other people play games that have simple rules, and being able to root for "their" team gives slow-witted people pleasure and prevents them from having to contemplate the deeper meanings of life or develop skills or hobbies.

Football players and other sportsmen have to do pretty much the exact same thing. It's not like they just wake up one day and are playing sport at a professional level.

LOL!!!
Less than 1% of students in America are in the sports programs that pro athletics teams pull from, and of those maybe only 2%-3% actually go pro.
Becoming a pro athlete is about as likely as winning a million dollars playing a 5¢ slot machine.

How do you not like to watch a game on television? Or attend a football game?

Where the hell are you pulling those numbers from? The air or your ass?
I like to watch boxing, but I don't think they should be payed like 1m a year.
While I do enjoy watching sports, I feel that they get paid an unhealthy amount of money. I feel the same way about movie stars as well.
Entertainment is a good investment for the rich.
Where the hell are you pulling those numbers from? The air or your ass?
Both, actually.
I'm not going to do the math for you, but why don't you try counting how many kids there are in high school sports programs, and then how many pro athletes the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc, hire on every year.
It's gonna be about 1% or less.
We like to watch people live our dreams.
Edit
Not trying to say it's justified to pay an athlete millions of dollars a year, but we have to remember that they're not just merely playing a sport - they're playing it at an EXTREMELY high level. Max Afinogenov (former NHLer) played a game in some run-of-the-mill men's league not too long ago and scored, if I remember correctly, 20+ goals. These people aren't just good at what they do, they're superb.
On a basic level under all that marketing, pro sports is tough as fuck. I've learned playing MLB is way more complex than it should be, american football too. The skill, leadership, teamwork all comes together, they deserve some chunk of cash for the risks they're involved (surgeries are NOT CHEAP)
It's truly not as easy as it looks, when you see it through your television
It's because sports are more market and product. They pay them so much, because they make so much. The more interest there is in a sport, the more they can pay because they make more money. Welcome to business.

Exactly.

I'm gonna start quoting this.
But your throwing money to the gutters.
Well I agree, there's a morbid amount of money circulating within the sports "market". But hey, it's all part of the entertainment industry. On the same principle buying videogames is throwing money into the gutter.

So basically you lack the ability to play any sports so you justify your disinterest in them by declaring them intellectually "below" you?
What's it like being such a superior being?
Just look at the NBA. It takes a lot of skill to do the shit they do. In fact it's more like the circus rather then basketball, like my coach likes to say.
