You don't need to be in an union to have rights. To be ill can simply not be a valid reason to get fired. Corporations do have a responsibility towards their employees. AFAIK an employee can not "just" be fired unless they have committed a crime. Besides if someone is genuinely ill and the doctor has given advice (whether or not it is on paper) not to work the employer is obliged to respect that.
The reason of getting fired is in no way valid.
Well, here's what I did. I called the guy again and told him I'm going to sue him. He told me that he is hiring me again. (After a long conversation, don't get me wrong, I'm oversimplifying) I called again 15 seconds later and told him I quit and that he should be ashamed of his stupidity. I then called the competitive store, down the street, which was my other option when I was searching for work and asked them if they have any open spots after explaining my situation. And... I got hired on the same position as before, but in a different store. Sure, the pay is a bit smaller, but I can live with that. It was totally worth it.

Don't really know about other countries but in Sweden firing someone for calling in sick over the phone instead of in person is illegal.

Not to be offensive but both me and my girlfriend got pretty bad cases of the flu last month and be both went to work and in my case my boss sent me home because i was simply too sick.
You should always go in and see if you can work. Not just call in lazy sick.
