God I loved spongebob and I still do, though like many have said its newer episodes are simply garbage. I remember going to see the movie, we all thought that it'd be the end of spongebob at that point and we were moping about it, though it came to a surprise that they'd still be making episodes past that point (at the time I had no idea about the writers being swapped up since I was like, 10) and I'll admit I enjoyed most of the first season after the movie, though it quickly started to degrade. The old episodes were pure genius even looking back at them now.
100% Agree. You can tell by my avatar that I am still very fond of Spongebob, and the movie. The movie was just golden, it's a great adventure flick for a very original, fun show. I also agree that after the movie the episodes were still a bit on par with the pre-movie episodes, but slowly slipping in quality. Towards the end of Season 4 is when it began getting bad. I still watch Spongebob to this day, I have several of the DVD's and I don't think I will ever get over the series. Like I said it's a very original show and was a very important part of my childhood. Spongebob is, and will always be, one of the most nostalgic and happiest parts of my life. Season 1 -3 were the classic. The rest went down the drain
Season 1 -3 were the classic. The rest went down the drain
Season 4 was good about halfway through, and acceptable towards the end. I can't vouch for Season 5 and beyond since I stopped watching it religiously. Although there are still a few newer episodes that are fairly good. Not " last week " new but have been around since the decline in quality. The Original Frycook was decent and worth a few laughs, Squidward with long golden hair :v:, Along with that Two Faces of Squidward ( handsome Squidward ) and House Fancy weren't bad either. Not exactly great, but very tolerable. But still, they have nothing on Seasons 1, 2 and 3.
Sure. Seeing Squidward's toenail getting torn off is such a delight.
Oh god I completely forgot about that part. Aside from that the rest of the episode is still decent. Gilded doorknobs.
I can't say ALL the new episodes suck, but the ratio of good to shit ones is pretty high. They never repeat the good, old episodes anymore. I mean I guess it doesn't truely matter, as everyone here is past the target audience for Spongebob. But we feel like we should still be listened to because we still like the show and are unhappy with how it's been the past several seasons. The thing is, Spongebob is for Nickolodean as what South Park is for Comedy Central. It's such a trademark series that ending it will cause a lot of backlash from both young and old viewers.
Seems to me it's more like "Spongebob According to Squidward" nowadays. The newer episodes just consist of annoying the hell out of him.
Pretty much every character's personality has been polarized in one way or another. Spongebob's too innocent, Patrick's too stupid, Squidward's too miserable, Mr. Krabs is too greedy, and Plankton's too obsessed with his business. Most of the semi-important and minor characters have been completely phased out of the show too. The only people the show ever acknowledges anymore are The Krusty Krab employees, Patrick, Plankton and occasionally Plankton's wife.
Never seen that show. I've heard of it, though. Grew up in Canada on YTV. Was never on that channel.
Ed, Edd, and Eddy aired on Teletoon in Canada. I watched it all the time. I have the first season of Spongebob on DVD. I'm tempted to go watch it. Netflix also has all the seasons.
yeah it was, what are you talking about?? YTV even interviewed the voice of spongebob at one point.
He was responding to a post talking about Ed, Edd and Eddy. Read what he quoted. Anyone remember Patchy the pirate? For anyone who didn't know he was played by Spongbob's actor.
I have the 100 episodes collection of SpongeBob. The first three seasons were comedy gold, and seriously was groundbreaking for the cartoon industry. Now, it's just unfocused humor, the characters have been made less mature, and situations have been "dumbed down" in order to appeal to kids.
-link to tvtropes-
welp so much for being on facepunch today.
I liked SpongeBob before it became mainstream. :hipsterglasses:

So SpongeBob now appeals to the "lol that was random XD XD" crowd? I haven't watched it in forever. [adult swim] is my replacement for 90s era Nickelodeon.
Rolf is my favorite character from Ed Edd and Eddy because his name is Rolf, common by middle age Swedes.
Same thing that happened to the simpsons.. they just ran out of material and inspiration.
Sponge Bob is still funny, but mainly the pictures like the close ups.
Does anybody remember the one episode where Spongebob discovers the curse words on the dumpster outside the Krusty Krab? Then him and Patrick going around saying them, and the words were substituted with dolphin noises? I love that episode. :D

The first half-ish of the series after the movie was alright, but other than that a good episode only comes around occasionally. I think the movie should have been the end.

After the movie the series went down hill. The movie was fucking awesome though
It did have a nice touch to it back then, plenty of good humor where it could be childish and smart at the same time, now it's just fallen into the randumb crowd by making Spongebob and Patrick pure retards, and Squidward the punching bag. Yeah they were slow witted before but to a certain degree, now they just went overboard with it since they've dried up on good jokes and figure they can just get away with pointless random filler.
Another thing that pissed me off was how stupid Spongebob got. He wasn't exactly a genius in the old episodes, but in the new ones, he's an annoying-voiced fucktard who makes gay jokes/annoys Squidward every 2 seconds and doesn't show the slightest bit of intelligence.
Must write speech, ooh a TVtropes lin- wait a minute, your not catching me this time internet.
The writers got on their rocks and drove away. They did the pilgrims proud.
I personally feel that now Spongebob and Patrick are too witty and 'old'. See, what I found so goddamn bloody hilarious about classic spongebob was how he was like this mentally challenged child. Remember that one where squidward pulls the ultimate april fools joke on spongebob, and he comes out of that trash can as a cylinder? The utterly pathetic little crying sound he made and the way he slinked off was just beyond funny... But it portrayed him as so naive and stupid and almost made him seem new to the world - like a little kid in a big city. Now he's some cliche spewing, plan-making witty uppity smartarse know-it-all fuck that just isn't at all interesting to watch. Patrick has also become too smart too. I mean, yes he's still STUPID, but he acts so serious and knows things that you would normally expect him to be completely clueless about. I remember seeing one newer ep where they talk about workers compensation or some other shit like that, and Sponebob is just yapping on about it like it were an everyday thing. Classic spongebob would sit there with a blank face then just start crying or something, and that would actually have been hilarious. Probably haven't made my opinions all that clear, but I just think the whole attitude has changed so much that it's practically unwatchable. Makes me very sad.
Spongebob used to be a gem. The witty, subtle humor combined with childish elements that could bring enjoyment to a large age group was what made it great. Watching through the older episodes again at Sixteen, I understand more of the humor and why it was funny. Personally, it gradually grew worse, it wasn't just a sudden white to black transition.
It needs the Tiny Tim music when something cool happens again
