I would advise against just upping sticks and moving to the US - most Western countries are as bad as Germany in terms of paperwork (I mean, goddamn, why do I need references, a CV and a covering letter just to get a bloody job in a shop?!) but in America you'd also have to deal with getting a green card and proving to every employer that yes, you can speak English and yes, you are allowed to work here. Also any sort of digital work requires this now. In the 90s you could just rock up with a portfolio and be like "Yeah I can do this shizz" and you'd get hired but now because there's more people doing digital work you need qualifications. The ad agency I used to work for was terrible for it - they would sometimes hire lesser candidates because they'd gone to design school, done apprenticeships etc. etc. so had more on paper than the crazy creative freelance guy. But they'd still go for freelancers so you could try that approach to start with. Freelancers makes loads of money but the work isn't guaranteed to be steady.
