Anyways today was a momentous day, I think. I've been toiling a lot over what I'm going to major in in college and stuff, since this year is going to be my last year of high school, and I've never been able to pin something down. Basically my passion is English -- writing and reading and all that jazz. However, my family continually tries to convince me that there's no job market for English majors and that I should go into a science instead. (Probably true.) Both my parents were/are (my mom no longer teaches and my dad lives across the country) chemistry professors, so I come from a thoroughly science-oriented families. (Not to mention Asian heritage. :v:)
As such, I've spent the past few years trying to convince myself that I love science and whatever. I did research with professors at local colleges and stuff, and took reasonably advanced science courses. But honestly my heart's never been in it. It's not that I don't find it interesting (I actually read Discover and Scientific American magazine, I'm a huge geek) but it's not something I see myself devoting my life to.
So anyways my mom is using some college-planning service to find colleges that will firstly offer what I want, and secondly be affordable. Today I had a phone conference with a consultant from that service, basically talking about what I want to do in college. I mentioned my whole issue of English vs science, and just from the way I talked he was pretty staunchly suggesting I pursue what really interests me. I've heard that from people before, but somehow something clicked and I realized I absolutely will not waste my life doing something I'm only sort-of passionate about.
Now, naturally, I don't have specifics down. I'm not sure exactly what I'm majoring in (obviously) but at least I've got the conviction to pursue what I love naturally, and not what I force to love. I'm weirdly relieved, honestly.

Just be an English teacher or a writer. If it's something you wanna do with the rest of your life, then make sure it's something you feel passion for.

I think, ideally, I want to become a professor of literature or something. I'd like to teach, but I want to do it at a high level -- being a middle/high school English teacher would be kind of painful.

It's a great step forward on a scientific front but on a logistical one it will be a long time before we see any effects in public health - it costs $13,900 for a years worth of pills. I guess will have to stick to condoms and sensibility for the time being.
