You guys are really inspiring me to get fit! Thank you. I'd love to get back into swimming again too!
I used to go swimming all the time when I was younger, I might get back into it too
I probably need to buy some new swimming shorts tho

Good idea, something like tight shorts or trunks are better for swimming... or you'll find yourself getting dragged down by baggy shorts.
never done before.

Does that look familiar, Saza?
Whoa.
At the moment I live near a swimming pool and I should probably make more use out of it. I've swam a couple times but I'd rather start doing laps and get my cardio up more than it has been sitting at this computer.
Whoa.
I know right? It just so happens this is on the stretch of rapid that I kayak on.
how do you know what to do the first time
sometimes when i go past there i see all the fancy scary machines and big burly men that could snap me like a twig and it puts me off going
Just jump on something and go at it - there's really no "rules" behind it and nobody's gonna judge you as everyone has their own workout that works best for them. Look up tips online depending on what your goals are. I.E. certain style workouts are better if you want to lose weight, while others are better if you want to gain muscle.
Some basic tips:
1. Always do at least 15min of cardio somewhere in your workout. I usually start with it, my BF ends with cardio. The more intense the better, but it is best to pace yourself so you don't end up having to walk half the time. Most treadmills have a "quick workout" button on them - I just do this for 15 minutes. It is better to actually run though if that's easily avalable. But even if you are doing light cardio for 15 minutes to get used to it, that helps. Eventually once you get better/more fit you can bump it up to 20-25-30 minutes of cardio, but that kinda requires a bit of time dedication should you go to the gym every day.
2. If you want to build muscle, focus on only two muscle groups (i.e., arms+chest, or arms+back, or legs+core). You also want to do 6 reps at 80% of your max, ideally (or 7/8, everyone's different). What that means is, if you are doing a chest press, you do a chest press 6 times at a weight level that is 80% of whatever you can press. So if you can only press/lift 150lbs, then you'd want to bench at 110-125 and do 6 reps. Once you do a set (6 reps), rest for about 30 seconds then do it again. You want to do a minmum of 3 sets. It's a good idea to alternate muscles once you are done with a certain type of exercise. I.E. if you did a lot of bicep curls, move onto triceps next before going to a bench press.
The best place to be at the end of a workout is a state of muscle failure. In that, if you try to lift weight but you simply cannot - this is a good indicator that you really worked that muscle.
3. Make sure to stretch! It helps prevent injury and helps warm you up.
4. Weightloss/Cardio is different from muscle building, in that you should still use muscle training machines, but instead of doing 6 reps at 80% of your max for a set, you want to do a lower weight with many more reps per set. You'll also want to focus on doing more general cardio exercises such as jogging.
Theres also using free weights (not machiens) which are supposed to be better for working out/muscle building with (as it uses all the muscles in the arm instead of focusing on specific ones) but those require good technique to do well, and I've not personally used them.
All in all, what matters is that you are doing something most of all. And don't be afraid to ask for a personal trainer - 99% of gyms and rec centers offer this for free. They'll basically design a workout plan for you, and help you stay motivated depending on what your goals are, and let you know exactly what you'll want to do. There are tons of people at my gym who are total newbies at going to the gym and get personal trainers to help them learn how to take advantage of their gym time the best - it's what they are there for :) And they won't judge you at all for it, because most of the people they personally train are in your position, or are people who are experienced and want a specilized workout plan.

Protein powder is important to get it you want to start working out seriously, I mean, you could buy a lot of chicken and turkey, but you would have to buy amino acid supplements, and it would end up costing more. This ones pricey, but its marked down from $90, and really good quality.

Or you can just eat a balanced diet, although it's recommended for building size of your muscles... it's really not important or particularly healthy, I try to avoid supplements in general, food is just better.
Cottage Cheese is also something really good for protein

Or eat a balanced diet alongside it, nothing bad about it health-wise, and yes, some supplements are bullshit and scams, which is why you research whatcha getting.
All this talk of exercise and gym work makes me want to get off this damn computer and get fitter myself. Unfortunately gyms cost money, and that's something I really don't have. I could walk and jog and stuff I suppose, but there's really nowhere decent around here for that either.

find a forest or a park
I used Bowling balls as weights when I didn't have any workout equipment. You don't really need to join a Gym to be healthy.

on a side note I totally can't get enough of the Aquabats

Lately I've been really much healthier at eating. I used to sometimes eat 20+ biscuits, chocolate, icecream in a day. I honestly don't know how I'm not fat, I guess I'm just lucky. I'm eating some prunes + Yogurt at the moment as a snack. I feel so much better eating healthy!
I don't think this thread is utter shit. Months-ish ago I was confused as fuck and could not feel comfortable with being gay. I asked this thread for advice and whether or not I should just try and force myself to be straight and someone (Can't remember who) said that they were in the exact same position years ago with a catholic family and all. He gave me advice which stopped me from forcing myself to be straight which might of screwed with me physiologically.
So, thanks gay thread. You're not all bad

I really enjoy this thread, I just ignore the posts I dislike. I only joined last week and I've had a lot of fun chatting in here. That's nice you found out who you really are.

I have not been swimming in so long.. I hope once I start going to the Gym I feel motivated to start swimming again. I really did enjoy it.
I'm got a big fan of swimming, fucking chlorine burns the fuck out of my eyes.
The water shouldn't burn your eyes unless the manager of that pool doesn't have the right chemical balance and the chlorine is too high.

my eyes watered up just reading your post. that's pavlovian conditioning for you
my eyes watered up just reading your post. that's pavlovian conditioning for you
We have salt water pools where I come from, they are really good... your eyes don't burn and it's more buoyant.
I love the smell of chlorine.
I love the smell of chlorine.
Really? it's the same smell as watered down bleach.
I love the smell of chlorine.
I thought that smell in pools was a lack of chlorine.
At least that's what I was told
I love the smell of chlorine.
I hope you're not talking about pure chlorine. The second you breathe it you choke and cough and it feels like there's this terrible-smelling chemical coating your throat and lungs. It's also hard to breathe!
We have salt water pools where I come from, they are really good... your eyes don't burn and it's more buoyant.
I actually live right on the coast so theoretically I could go swimming in seawater whenever I wanted to, but it's the North Sea so I'd freeze to death even though it's summer
Really? it's the same smell as watered down bleach.
the smell of bleach makes the inside of my mouth taste like blood
but theres no blood there
