tbh on the contrary you can tell someone's mentally addled online it's almost entirely when they're hyperpopular or some shit like that. if you got half a braincell you can be literally anybody you want on the internet, so the people who've not got wholesome real lives take that to the maximum and become caricatures in my experience.

I've never really understood the need to have a completely different personality online than you would in real life.
I usually just try to be myself online, and in person.
No point to acting differently than the way you should feel you act, I suppose.

It's not really a "completely different" personality, it's a more true personality. Sometimes people are pressured into suppressing their personalities in real life due to family, friends, society, etc. Here, they don't have that pressure because there's no real way for them to pressure you unless they figure out what your online name is. You're free to act in the way you truly are with few consequences.

Depends, people are more confident online cause they're less nervous due to a) no physical/eye contact and b) virtually nothing to lose irl so you'll get more out of people who are nervous in person and very introverted when they reveal much more online. I guess acting like a completely different person is a diff thing, but in a lot of cases this should kinda explain it.
