Military is military, my uncle was a Sergeant who was nearly at the rank of seargent major. He'd been in it a long time, likely far longer than you and he was captured by insurgents while on active duty. He had gone through a LOT more than you and did not have your mindset.

I've been on medication and anti-depressants most of my life up until the past couple years.

You're not spreading it though, and the fact you've just acknowledged your misery and self loathing only serves to show our original point (that you're not normal and your advice to discount friendships shouldn't be followed) is valid.
You've clearly had a difficult life and I understand that it's embittered you. That's sad. But you're embittered; this is not representative of a non-embittered person. I've had things happen to me that could have embittered me to people, but I luckily powered through them. Not everyone has that luck.
Perhaps Americans and British people are way more different than I've been acknowledging; certainly Americans seem wired different but from a lot of what I've heard from servicemen (including a Canadian) the whole camaraderie of brothers-in-arms is fairly universal. Perhaps America is the exception, but films like Band of Brothers suggests at least the myth of brothers-in-arms persists over there.

"Having an excuse" and "having a valid reason that excuses you from culpability" are two different things.
