A yeast extract/by product of beer brewing. It's a common spread for bread in England and is very nice (if a bit bitter). Vegemite is the version that is sold in Australia. Marmite is the name of the product sold in the UK and New Zealand.

Not sure how they make vegemite, but I know it's a slightly weaker version of marmite which is basically yeast extract, it's an extremely salty and bitter, thick spread that goes really well on toast.
It's thick and gloopy enough to get a really nice spread, and it makes you shiver with the sheer saltiness if you spread it generously, which feels really nice.

Marmite is pretty much exclusive to the UK and Vegemite to Australia and surrounding areas if I'm not mistaken.
I can't find either here, and it's $40 to import a small bottle of either.
