http://news.whoviannet.co.uk/2011/08/bbc-starz-announce-an-innovative-partnership/
Following the worldwide success of Torchwood: Miracle Day, the BBC and Starz have today announced “an innovative multi-year partnership” together.
The new deal will see them co-develop further one-hour TV dramas to be distributed in the US and Canada by Starz and internationally by BBC Worldwide. Head of BBC Worldwide, Jane Tranter, has said that the deal will enable them to work together on more “intelligent, and honest storytelling” like the new series of Torchwood.
She explained: “Working with Starz on Torchwood: Miracle Day has been a collaborative and invigorating journey, and we are looking forward to bringing Starz subscribers more of the programming they’re coming to expect, which is synonymous with BBC values.”
“This exciting partnership with BBC Worldwide Productions allows us to provide Starz subscribers more original programming,” Chairman/CEO of Starz, Chris Albrecht, added. “The incredible teams at BBC Worldwide Productions will be terrific partners. We’re pleased to be able to extend our relationship with them through this venture.”
A fifth series of Torchwood is yet to be confirmed, with Chris Albrecht having recently commented that the future of the series depends on Russell T Davies’ commitments.
I think this is a good move by the BBC. With the budget is being cut, the licence fee is being frozen etc, it means there is less money is going to be spent. As drama is the most expensive and time-consuming part of television, it will be badly effected. So, this deal basically means that they are trying to preserve as much of the drama of the BBC as possible, rather than just cutting everything. Hats off to them for trying to find other solutions to the problems!
An international partnership like this will sure work around the dosh issues surronding TV drama. A real smooth deal, smoother than super-smooth peanut butter.

Just a pity that there can't be much more money put into Who due to budget restrictions. I always wonder what it would look like on a budget such as an American/HBO dramas...
But there's been SO MUCH merchandising this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see the quality go up again after the money they must be raking in. There's been more than ever. They even have a repro of the gun the Doctor used to implant the recording chips into the crew from The Impossible Astronaut. And I think you can buy the Doctor with every imaginable accessory and outfit under the sun as seperate figures. You can even buy one Silent figure with its mouth open, and a different one with its mouth shut!
Have my eye on the new Idris figures though...

Not all of that money will go back into Doctor Who unfortunately, it will end up going into BBC Three and daytime time, cheap stuff that nobody truly cares about. Sometimes that's how you have to fill the airwaves
[editline]8th August 2011[/editline]
Also, if I worked at the Beeb I would stop broadcasting TV after 12. Start broadcasting again at 6 in the morning. Then, hopefully, that would save enough money from energy bills to put on better drama or show F1 again, things people will actually enjoy rather than having pointless programming for drunk people staggering back into their homes at 4 in the morning.

Tbh, though, isn't it just repeats for sign language and then school TV in the middle of the night?

On an unrelated note, stumbled across this on Threadless. More than a whiff of Who about it:

Signed repeats on BBC three instead of ordinary repeats and the rest can be put on iPlayer. The School TV can be bought or put on the internet. Anyway, they are already in pretty much every school by now. Basically, I've run out of ideas and now I'm being deliberately awkward
So I just found out my friend's dad has all of the old episodes of Doctor Who on tape in his attic. He's not allowed to even touch them. If I were his dad, I'd turn those tapes in, they'd probably give a life-sized golden Dalek statue in return for them.
Did this guy get back to us? It's like the best news ever. If Doctor Who magazine knew about this they'd fucking cry.
I think it's good that Doctor Who has a restricted budget, it makes the producers and writers pay more attention to the writing/story.
They should have unlimited budget on the anniversary episode though!
Apparently, the Voyage of the Damned was given pretty much unlimited length, even though it only ended up being 72 minutes long

Hey! My favourite 10th Doctor speech came from that episode!

Just watched The City of Death. Was a pretty good episode and it was the first old Who episode I've watched.

In the 80's cannada started working on an animated Doctor Who series.

I think it looks ok for a kiddy spin-off, despite the fact the doctor looks like a weird blend between his 3rd and 4th self with an eating disorder, and K9 is on some type of flying hover board.
But those purple Daleks? No thanks.
Is there any other concept for the show, or this it the only one you can find?
Which Doctor is that supposed to be. Tom or Jon?
They should have unlimited budget on the anniversary episode though!
Right, ONE, it should have unlimited budget.
B- no, wait, TWO, it has to be amazing.
Three, or B, it has to be long.
and FOUR, or D, or that little IV they put in brackets, it has to have altleast two doctors.
I'm a little worried about what they're going to do for the anniversary episode now. Whatever it is, chances are it's not gonna be what we expect / were hoping for.
It's already gonna be meaningless without the 9th Doctor. And probably the 8th too. The others are coming from "Yes" to "Maybe" the closer we get. The only person who is "Yes I will do it for sure" is David Tennant. Everybody else is "No" or "Maybe, we'll have to see I'm not so sure"
I can picture Tom Baker only appearing for 2 minutes or something at the end, offer everyone Jellybabys and leave.
And the fans will be satisfied just because he appeared.
I think the real musts for me are Tennant and Tom. I do love Peter and I think Mcgann deserves his time too. But Baker and Tennant are undeniably two of the most remembered and praised Doctors in the shows history. And Captain Jack is a must too as Torchwood is a BIG think now.
