Guys, I was wondering if you would want to start a skateboarding AND longboarding thread considering they're so similar. Asking this because I was about to make a skate thread but I noticed this thread
pm me if you want me to tell you the setup i went with :)
is it a secret? throw some pics up!
Thinking of buying an Original Pintail 40 as my first board, good choice? Or I might just get the deck but then i'm not sure what trucks i'd get, i'm thinking Bones Reds bearings and orangatang orange wheels. Thanks guys :)

Thanks guys :)
Not a fan of original at all so I don't recommend them. Otang wheels I also don't recommend. Don't go original trucks at all if you plan to go faster than 20mph. Look around longboardskater.com at earthwing stuff and be sure to look at abec11 wheels especially the flashbacks. They are cheaper than most wheels but they sure do ride great. Also this goes out to everyone buying wheels or whatever in the next few days. Milehighskates.com is having a 8 year anniversary sale so I'd wait a little and see what sort of deals they throw out. Plus when you buy wheels from them you get some nice free bearings/bearing spacers which is easily a $10-15 value.
Looking at bearings for both longboarding and skateboarding, I'm glad they dropped that abec shit which they used back 5 or so years ago. Everything was "abec 7" this and "abec 9" that, when in fact it doesn't even matter. The tolerances the ball bearings are made to has almost no effect at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABEC_scale I remember buying some "abec 9" bearings from route one. 2 months later I landed a 360 flip and one cracked, shooting all the ballls out the side. It's a good thing I wasn't going very fast or I could have got really hurt. Bought some Bones Reds after that, never looked back.
I was gonna disagree with this entire thread and say 'DO A KICKFLIP' but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqN-3PCM1Oo
Just had my first real Longboarding injury, came down a hill too fast and ended up falling and sliding about 5 metres, grazed up real bad. Boards ok though.
Took these today:

I'm saving up for this helmet because my current one has very little swag
Holy shit, I just moved into the countryside. I went for a tour on my bike and came across giant, deserted, country roads that go far up into the hills. The tarmac is so smooth and the hills are so steep and windy. Time for a new free rider I think. Suggestions?
What is that helmet called?
Bern Brentwood winter helmet
Longboarding is simply amazing. :eng101:

Also the latest speedboard they have the PTG is soooo sexy. [editline]12th August 2011[/editline] Clutch PTG http://i.imgur.com/fWNTU.jpg its so beautiful.
Yeah I was thinking about Clutch. The portugese looks sick, but I'm going for symmetrical I think. So I might look into the lambchop or doubletap.
float I don't feel like taking pics right now *yawns*, but I'll take a few over the next few days also got mah first graze on the front of my ankle, thought it would be fine to longboard dh the next day (today), and opened it back up :p I fucking love this sport though, thanks for getting me into this FP. one last comment: is it just me, or do you guys take care of your boards like theyre babies for the first week or two, and freak out when you get dents?

My hands were shaking afterward though.
Yeah I was thinking about Clutch. The portugese looks sick, but I'm going for symmetrical I think. I'd buy a board from them in a instant if I wasn't already needing some wheels.
I broke my camera longboarding today. RIP Camera. Still got some pretty beast shots (25 runs down the same hill): And another: AND ANOTHER: Someone teach me to use the minizable tags for I am a Wolf from Minecraft.
I honestly know nothing about longboarding, and I'm not really picking it up from lurking in here haha. But I'm really interested in buying one for commuting around my college campus, so could you guys maybe throw me some pointers? I'm gonna be on a college budget too, so nothing too expensive. And honestly, nothing too flashy either, seeing as I'm going to school in Detroit. And I like rasta or checkered colored themes!
I started with a skateboard if that helps but if not, Start out with the shorter longboards to learn how to control the things first and if you like skateboarding get a trick longboard.

Its cheap and people seem to like it over at the fish. You can always paint rasta colors on it or do a custom checkered grip tape job.
recently i've REALLY been wanting to get into this thinking about getting one for christmas, a few of my friends are also interested in it and we want to all pick up the hobby and carve some sicknasty hills
I started with a skateboard if that helps but if not, Start out with the shorter longboards to learn how to control the things first and if you like skateboarding get a trick longboard.
Although longboards are mainly designed for travel whereas skateboards are usually designed mainly for tricks, I would have thought a skateboard would be better for commuting tbh. Maybe it's just because I did skateboarding for years, but having a short deck easily quickly maneuvered by the tail just seems invaluable to me. It's different if you want to bomb down a hill or feel like you're on a surf board, but for practicality on a short journey I would have thought a skateboard would be better...
gravity will punish you if you fail...
I agree with takkun the ks scimitar is a very smexy board guys I'll tell you the details now but I'll post some pics later I got the 42" Scimitar with 70mm flashbacks, the randal RII black trucks, bones reds bearings, and the two options were "no ks logo" and "extra glass" extra glass worked perfectly for my board, a bit of flexiness if I jump on it.

I knew it'd be a great first board for anyone.
So what would be some average brands I can look out for in-store? And the price? Might get one before Christmas
