So I was looking through general discussion and found this thread, I have skated on a "trick skateboard" and I have always thought long boarding would be neat but I haven't gotten around to doing so. Can you buy a deck for a long board separately from the trucks and wheels etc. As well as can I use the bearings from my "trick skateboard" with the wheels for a long board and as well as the trucks, do the wheels have the same diameter? and can "trick skateboard" trucks fit on long boards?
must learn how to slide.
Quick question on a scale of 1-10 how time consuming and fun would you guys say longboarding is? Cause I'm sorta low on money and was wondering if this was a good recreational investment
Before I built my longboard I didn't know shit about skating or longboarding. It's been about a week and I can't seem to get away from cruising around my neighborhood. Definitely fun, and if you're low on cash you can always pick up something for 100 seeing as it's a beginning board. Trucks from a skateboard will work but it has to correlate with the deck. Small deck for small trucks, big deck for big trucks. For size, the average longboard wheel is above 60mm just so it's easy to get upto and maintain speed and maneuver over obstacles. Bearings will get you by, but bones reds are really cheap and nice for the price.
I've just been diagnosed with bronchitis, so no skating for me until it calms down enough to prevent my asthma from acting up. In the interim, I'm planning some replacements for my bearings. Any recommendations for some flatgrounds/occasional downhill freeride?

god damn bestbuy scheduling me the day there is a race in DC. At least I have off for the local slide jam going down next week.

I can't decide weather or not to get one or two new sets of wheels. I got some races come up in summer and i need a new pair of grippier wheels. I dont know if i should get either 1 set of Flashbacks 81a for freeride and a set of sector 9 race forms 78a for racing or just one set of classic zigs 78a.
I use 78a for free ride but I kind of wish I has some 80a plus. Riding on a friends board, I can tell/feel the difference in the duro and how much faster it is on asphalt. However, the 78a are nice cause they go over everything and they keep their speed. This is just my experience though.
So, it's fucking cold here now, and my longboarding is slowing down. I'm going to start gearing up for next season with a BC Eel board w/ Paris 180s, Metro Motion 80a's, Abec gumball 75a's (for wheels that aren't torn up from sliding when I need that), and new pucks for my gloves. Sound good to go?

People fucking love it, its my next choice in wheel once I core my 78a classic thane powerballs [editline]31st October 2011[/editline]
So, it's fucking cold here now, and my longboarding is slowing down. Personally I really want to try grippins since I heard they slide like a mofo so probably gonna pick a set up in 81a personally.
That's what I'm getting gumballs for, when I want a smooth ride.
That's what I'm getting gumballs for, when I want a smooth ride.
It'll definitely do the job than. 75a may be slow though so I think 78a would be better suited. I love me some 78a classic thane.
Placed at the southern maryland slide jam. Won a arbor mission deck and some 81mm s9 raceforms. Pretty stoked.
So I'm thinking of getting a longboard for my birthday, my friend has one and it's pretty nice, fun to ride. His is a 36"ish and I'm thinking I want to get one in the 36"-38" range. I want to be able to cruise around town quickly and smoothly, and I want to be able to make agile, sharp quick turns. I want a board that has the capability for more advanced techniques and such for when I eventually get comfortable, so I don't have to upgrade everything. I also want a board with cut-outs. Any ideas for a board like this? I'm looking to spend no more than 200$. I was thinking of getting a prebuilt one, but Im wondering if it would be cheaper/better to make it myself? I have no experience in this sort of thing so thats another factor to take into account.
Has anybody tried out the Never Summer Revolt? It looks pretty similar to my board, the Rayne Vendetta, and I'm pretty interested in it.
Just started longboarding about 3 weeks ago and I gotta say it's pretty great, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone considering trying it

Earthwing makes affordable stuff, and their new supermodel and roadkiller are super rad looking. Personally haven't rode them but I ride my landyachtz switchblade the most out of any board and trust me a symmetrical deck with a drop is the perfect jack of all trades deck.
So would getting this: http://earthwingskates.com/products/decks-a-completes/supermodel.html Be a good idea? Are the trucks and everything that come with it good? I can't seem to find a release date on it though, and I'd rather get my board sooner than later

You may want to get hybrids from milehighskates though if you want to use venom bushings or any taller bushings so I'd say get those baseplates. Get some flashbacks and your set man. This is basically the jack of all trades setup everyone reccomends.
What are flashbacks and what are baseplates/ what kind should I be getting?
Flashbacks are a wheel made by Abec11. Abec11 is my personal favorite in wheels and have some amazing thane formula that give a amazing slip and grip ratio. A baseplate is the plate that you screw to your board and the hanger is the piece of metal that has your wheels on it. They're two separate components which have bushings between them which can be interchanged so you can have a really stiff feeling or a really turny carvy setup or something in the middle. Everyone has different bushing preferences. http://milehighskates.com/hybrid-215-trucks.html these are what you need truck wise http://longboardskater.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LS&Product_Code=A11FB7081A&Category_Code=AY this is a amazing starter wheel, shit I'm probably gonna buy a set next paycheck since they have such a nice slide. Hope that covers everything if you have any more questions shoot.

It will be the same pretty much as ordering wheels/bearings/bolts/griptape/trucks/board its just if you want to get specific. if you don't know to much about boards than you may want to get a prebuilt first time around.

It seems like if you do it wrong or for too long the wheels would gain traction, the board would stop, and you would fly forward, yet I see videos of people doing it while flying down steep hills.
Still getting used to my board... I took it down some hills and was wondering how loose everyone likes there trucks.. I keep adjusting mine because when I go downhill it feels very unstable and sketchy but cruising I feel like I have an unnecessarily wide turning radius.

Granted I was doing standup since I didn't have gloves so gloves down takes like not so long. Its not that hard really if you watch some youtube videos and practice. Weight? I run calibers with pretty loose barrels and I keep it almost flush with the kingpin. Hit 50 on it too on the daily. Speaking of which got my nightskateboard custom "DarkShark" shit is soooo cash. I've never bombed hills on such a comfy deck and predrifted corners so smoothly than on this deck. Fucking love night.
Here is the truck I am using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00123YRG2/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img The nut came flush but since then I tightened it. I have a feeling that I should go back to what it was.

Get some venom bushings http://motionboardshop.com/bushinghelp than buy some bushings from motion, go with 2 sets of barrels than buy whatever one cone it tells you too. This way you can have a really carvey turn or you can limit it a bit and do downhill. Play around with bushings.
So, the other day it rained, and the day after I decided to do some slides down a nice hill across the way. I was doing a long ass pendy, when suddenly, I stopped. I got up and noticed that one of my wheels had removed its self from the truck in such a way for the wheel to fly way the fuck away, and the truck to have all the threads stripped from that side. Fuck my board. Those were fucking old- ass 80a Kryptos too :c
