I've been riding my Tan Tien all day. :h: Longboarding.

wish i could afford an electric longboard

troll, or you totally missed the point of longboarding
I've been longboarding for a while now, my board is mainly good for big downhill though and I want to buy a shorter one. I'm looking at an Apex 37.
My homemade skateboard deck is the same size as a longboard :frown:
Should put some beefy wheels on it and use it as both.

I don't know, it looks pretty fun.

Would only really be cool though if you bought one that went dangerously fast. Imagine cruising down empty highways on one of those at 50 kmph, that'd be awesome.
I just went down a 6-story parking structure a few minutes ago, and holy fuck was that fun. At the beginning I was scared as hell so I started at a quarter away from the bottom of the ramp. 1 hour later, I'm going full speed from the top.
I just need to work on my turning. I keep thinking that I'm going to fall so I make wideass turns.
[editline]17th October 2010[/editline]
Oh, and I don't even know how to stop yet, haha. I just bail when I think I'm going to fall. Almost killed myself a few times bailing while going down a ramp.

I wish I could do that, I've done the hills around my place too many times as there is nothing steeper. Plus they're not very long either.
I wish I lived somewhere with better hills and roads.
believe me, when i do somehow get extra cash...i am going to buy a sweet bamboo sector 9 long board
i miss long boarding

I bought a Globe Devo cruiser as a starter board back in March for about $180AUD. I mainly use it to get to my friends houses and because all my friends have these ~$400 longboards I'm able to keep up with them. Its a lot of fun, when i get enough money next year I'm going to buy a sector 9 board.
[editline]17th October 2010[/editline]
are there any good guides out there for maintaining the board?
I'm probably the last guy you should listen to since I just got my board 2 days ago, but I'd get something between 35" and 45". Any longer and portability becomes a problem, for me at least.
And how much are you willing to drop? I bought mine with the same purpose as you (commuting, hills, etc), so I bought the Vanguard w/ flex 3.
I just looked at that Vanguard you mentioned, it's a tasty number, I'll probably end up purchasing that one. I'll have to wait a week till my next paycheck arrives though. Would you say it's good for getting speed up on hills and likewise?
[editline]17th October 2010[/editline]
also anyone here do bert slides? I'm interested in purchasing some slide gloves, but if this pair of old gardening gloves I've got will do the trick, that would come in handy.

no definitely buy proper slide gloves. gardening gloves with be worn through in an instant.
I've been looking through various sites for boards recently and I've come across this
http://www.stokedlongboards.co.uk/mindless-savage-longboard-p-441.html
and I was wondering if this board is actually any good and if it is good for carving and cruising. I saw it said it was a racing board but I'm not sure what characteristics the board would have.
Anyone know any good longboard US sites been lookin to buy one instead of mooching off my friends one

Save yourself a few bucks.
Might consider buying one of these, though we don't tend to have many hills if were just outside a city centre, though they look a lot of fun to board round in the city centre of a Sunday or something.
Also, is the internet the only place to buy one? If so I want a low price.
tl;dr anyone know somewhere to buy one?
I wish I could longboard. I'm too tall for it, my center of gravity is pretty much my knees :frown:
I wish I could longboard. I'm too tall for it, my center of gravity is pretty much my knees :frown:
How tall are you?
I'm 6'1 and 160lbs, so pretty skinny.
And I have no sense of coordination whatsoever. I couldn't even stand on my board properly on my first day. It's all about practice, practice, practice.
I'm around 6'2 and never had a problem doing it
best is sketching off someones car or golf cart and just cruising down the road

AFAIK, the Vanguard isn't that great at doing high speeds on hills, though I see some people are going +45mph. So far I'm mostly using mine for parking structures, and it handles fine in that area.
I ride a BC Eel, and a Rayne Isis. I've hit 50 mph before. :v:
Anyone want some tips on what board you should get?

Get a Earthwing Miniglider or a Holesom Streetsweeper.

If you want to be going 30 mph+ do not get a board from loaded. Do not get any board that has FLEX.

I slide, you can make your own for about 15$. Do not buy the Vanguard, ti was my first board and it was ABSOLUTE SHIT. You don't slide on the gloves, you slide on tiny plastic pucks you velcro/glue onto the glove. You can make the pucks out of an old kitchen cutting board. Or buy them... Take a look at these:

I'd recommend the Supermodel.
