I honestly think that a lot of the stuff in the bible is common sense: Treating people with respect, and being kind should not be something limited to the bible. Other things like anti-gay beliefs are just fucking retarded. I was reading this thread and was about to say the same thing.
The only Logical reason I can see behind prohibiting homosexuality/incest/masturbation/ect during the time and place the passage was written was to incorage baby making.
Think about it, when Moses put down those laws, there were only 12,000 Israelites looking for the "Promised Land". While that might seem like a lot of people, they would of died off with time, and Moses wanted his people to find this land, even if it was past his life time. So he encouraged them to "make babies" in a manner where a child would be brought up safely with two parents to educate and shelter them.
So it probably made sense back then, but it's very not relevant today.

China is trying to tackle the problem by limiting the amount of children a family can have, (I think it's one boy or two girls per family).
In India, it's because it's a county where birth control is out of reach for most people, (A hooker costs less then a condom in some parts of India) and to make money, families have lots of children so they can get more money with more people working.
I'm not to sure about the facts, but basically, from what I know, most of the population boom happens in developing countries where large families are seen as being important.
