maybe instead of shitposting (ie screaming "CHRISTIAN VALUES" or "CENSORSHIP") you guys could provide some valid reasons to why this shouldnt go through
You see, that requires an ounce of intelligent thinking and common sense.
Unfortunately, the people censoring their avatars and complaining don't seem to be able to form an actual response worth reading.
Maybe some people are censoring their avatars purely out of the fun of it. Just because someone slapped a "censored" on their avatar doesn't mean they're genuinely butthurt.
I doubt it's going to change so people might as well just get use to it.

Yeah that's fine. I'm just saying people who go into the thread and say that this is censorship

No, no, I think I'll stick with shitposting. Thanks, though.
If you want an actual rebuttal, here you go: http://files.facepunch.com/garry/2014/July/11/2014-07-11_20-00-44.jpg
Maybe just judge avatars by this criteria because it is relevant to why some avatars would get removed in the first place.
Some random dude walks by and looks at your avatar, what would their reaction be/what would they think about it?
If the answer is that they would be disgusted/really weirded out by it, it would be a good idea to change it.

But that's extremely subjective. There's stuff that would weird out a lot of people, and then there's stuff that would weird out a small number of people who are unusually sensitive. And what makes something "weird" anyway? There's one avatar I'm thinking of that's creepy but I can't quite describe it (it's got an anime girl whose face turns into a freaky mess), it'd be a great example here. It doesn't bother me, but if someone else thought it was "too weird", what then?

Why do people compare avatar censoring to naked men in Rust, a video game?
The whole reasoning for nsfw avatar removal is that you wouldn't want friends or co-workers thinking you're a weirdo because someone had a distasteful avatar. Rust is simply a survival game, and one of the things you need to survive are clothes, so of course there's gonna be naked survivalists.
Basically, there's a huge difference between a naked man in a survival game and a person with an avatar of a dog ejaculating on itself.
But that's extremely subjective. There's stuff that...
Usually, if it's a sole person you could kindly ask them to change it, as long as you provide a valid reason
is it porn

congrats that's how deep this is
all you dips panicking over your avatar being anime and/or in a bikini are overblowing the whole thing, this is literally just roping back in an existing thing we used to ban harshly for on a regular basis. No porn avatars, no blatantly cropped porn, implied porn even if it isn't actually anything bad, etc. Porn threads are down for the count right now as we sort out a lot of things.
We're not going on a witch hunt for avatars, but if something's found we'll warn them to change instead of plain out banning. We're making a point right now to tell you things are tightening back up because there's a lot of slack to catch up on
all of the threads that are there solely for the porn, and others that are in question, are down right now. Things that are NSFW but aren't posted solely to be porn are still allowed, provided they're in their proper places or warned of without linking crap, etc.
Like this, this is fine. This is totally reasonable. I see literally no reason that it needs to go further than this other than "I don't like the thing that likes and I don't want to be reminded of it while browsing a public forum" which seems to be behind a lot of the "I don't like the anime/furry/pony avatars" and the "but muh anime" backlash.
They're fucking small pictures on the internet, as long as they fall within the rules there's no goddamn reason to get worked up.

Some random guy at work, school, whatever, you dont know who it might be. What is your gut reaction on what is OK and what is not OK? I use the term random guy because I want people to picture just an average person you might meet walking down the street. Yes it is subjective to each individual person, but we are not dealing with just one person.
Really the point is to try to empathize with the hypothetical average person.
i'm pretty sure the hypothetical average guy likes porn tho so that wouldn't work
Why not look at it like this, you're wearing a t-shirt, you're walking in a public space where people can see you.Your avatar is now on your t-shirt. Should you keep wearing that t-shirt?
The average person likes porn so much they want it in every aspect of their life, including but not limited to forum avatars?
I jerk off four times a day and wear Pornhub hoodies, doesn't everyone??

whoah i think we've got a new contender for top fast thread of the year
The average person likes porn so much they want it in every aspect of their life, including but not limited to forum avatars?
his post i directly replied to was a little different when i sent mine, but the original post at the start of this chain was

Some random dude walks by and looks at your avatar, what would their reaction be/what would they think about it?
If the answer is that they would be disgusted/really weirded out by it, it would be a good idea to change it.
so yea if a random guy walked by and he saw a moderately sexual avatar, depending on where you are, his opinion of you would change accordingly obviously. Like if you were at work on break, he might think you're a little weird if you didn't know each other, as long as you weren't actively jerking or being a creep in general. But he wouldn't outright think you're some scum for reading an internet forum were some users have avatars of all shapes and sizes. If you were at a school, it would be the same thing most of the time, although it would depend on your charisma and how lax they are at upholding school rules.
the point i'm mostly trying to make is that using an imaginary "average" guy as a qualifying element to determine what's right/wrong is a very imprecise variable that changes frequently, and shouldn't be considered when trying to make rules based on anything as it changes from area to area.
the post above also implies it could extend into more topics than just something "nsfw", because i'm pretty sure an average guy (depending on the locale/country) would be disgusted/weirded out by homosexual males unfortunately. so although he's attempting to rectify the current ambiguity of "what's too far", it's a pretty lax way to describe any concrete rules on avatars. but dai already stated that they aren't going that far, and that mods would warn people infringing at least for a while so we can learn the limits (like all other facepunch rules) before bans start being given out in full scale.

hell yeah i'll be gettin all the bitches with an animated shirt
ugh, I'm never going to have a good response to the all time classic "if you woke up in bed with the above user's avatar next to you..." threads anymore!

People wear band tees that are leagues more offensive than anything I've seen here... Just saying.
Nevermind then, I guess it's a pretty terrible way of looking at it still.

-snip-
This was dumb. This was a dumb argument.
Have you really not noticed that Garry leaves running the forum to chief mods like Rusty and postal

Who knew you have to be nude to be sexually attractive.
Talk about liking ugly girls lmao
I compare it because this forum is owned by the same man who makes that game. Do you think Garry cares if people here use pornographic avatars? The same man who admitted, shamelessly, to watching other men shake their penises at urinals?
Has anyone even asked Garry what he thinks about this?
but garry how can i be a weirdo for plastering my Nazi child porn across your forum, the one that you literally own and pay to maintain, when your game has a fuckin' DICK in it ? what right do you have to tell me that i'm a freakish, asocial creep when you have literally seen a man's penis before! what a damn hypocrite this guy is
[editline]14th July[/editline]
the fact of the matter is that you're being a creep either way by informing people of your fucked up fetishes, and people don't generally gaze at caveman dicks when they're at work so this point is super moot anyway
Ok so legit question how come all the porn threads are locked but the dragon megathread isn't locked.
You could always turn display of avatars off if it bothers you that much
He said in the OP that that's a bullshit way to deal with it.

I just realised that as well, what the fuck.
There's even porn linked on the latest page

I noticed that thread has always got special treatment. Some people say that the only reason it's been up was because dragon was moderator.

Because I got ~mod permission~.
It's a classic staple of Facepunch culture (lol), plus there's not much porn anyway.
You don't have to read it, plus it's buried on page fucking 1000 or something.

That probably was the case, but it did get closed for some time and came back last summer. Its been up because its substantially cleaner than it was a few years ago. Like serious, that one porn pic has been the only one in a couple weeks. They are posted infrequently and never image tagged.
And for what its worth, one of the old DMT threads were deleted. So the moderators DID acknowledge its existence.
