You ever just... stop posting on certain subjects for a while?

This always happens to me when I'm having a heavy debate about something when both of us are heavily entrenched in our points of views and there's no flaming going on to bring me back.

Pretty much.
I try not to talk about Godzilla anymore because people say that I'm being annoying
The issue is you were posting about it and other kaiju (spelling?) stuff in multiple threads and at one point you even started posting news articles on the subject quite often. You would have been fine if you'd just exercised some moderation.
Really? Because I've seen people getting "*tips fedora* xD" responses for just casually mentioning that they're atheist in relevant discussions
guess they're just a moronic minority
never seen that tbh
when anyone brings up fedoras, 9 time out of 10 its deserved

Well it's the thing that I grew up with. The first movies I can remember were Godzilla. Whenever I was sad, I'd go watch a Godzilla movie. If someone was making me upset at school, when I got home, I'd just play my Godzilla games to let off steam. When I was happy as a kid, I'd play with my Godzilla toys outside, or make them fight while listening to the soundtracks.
As I got older, I was really able to connect with people through the G-Fan community, and when doing a project on Tokusatsu, I was actually able to work out the kinks in my presentations.
Call it odd but I feel that Godzilla has helped me progress a lot further than one would expect, since it's the childhood thing that will always stick with me. It's something that I fall back to as a security blanket, of sorts. A big, radioactive security blanket.
If I actually posted in all the threads I have serious opinions on I would be known as the shittiest poster ever. I'm one of those artsy hipster feminist types who doesn't play video games anymore. I still kind of like the community here in a semi non-ironic way so I still hang around sometimes. Also that I cannot stand other internet communities with their lack of facepunch-esque rules that I have grown accustom to through being on this website for a while.
I have had to just avoid threads relating to feminism entirely because I know the general consensus on this website (I would have probably gone the way of MaxOfS2D, even I did not really agree with everything he had to say, or at least the way he said it.)
Tbh, Max was banned because it was easier to ban him than all the other people who were just as complicit in the derailing of many threads, not because he was a particularly bad poster.
Most of my posts are pure horse-shit anyway. don't worry about it, i don't take forums too seriously - you shouldn't too.
I sometimes write up a post, read it and close the tab.
Probably because I doubt myself if it's anything notable or worthy to post
I almost did it again.
I used to post fairly often, as I was confident that my opinion should matter, but as I grew up I realized how wrong I was. Nowadays, I don't really have many strong opinions as I believe the more opinionated you are, the more likely you are to be miserable. I'm probably wrong about that too though :^)
I just argue for a post or two and then i feel like a fucking idiot.
Yeah, I got that feeling all the time.
But now I have a mechanical keyboard. Any excuse to type is worthwhile.
of course
I see people who registered within the last one or two years with thousands and thousand of posts and wonder, why? are most of those posts even worthwhile or are they just throwing out "that sucks" in every SH thread
I like arguing in SH - I think it really helped me develop my talking skills and made me a more interesting person in general. I avoid topics which I have no knowledge on, but still read the discussions that originate from them. Plus, there's a certain thrill in carefully forming a perfect argument only to see it debunked bit by bit, forcing you to either re-evaluate your position or to dig deeper and devise something even more convincing. I've lost track of the times I've looked up studies, sources, articles, and anything else that would help bolster my position. When you're doing it, you don't really consider it, but looking back on things, I think I've definitely educated myself a lot simply because I was backed into a corner by someone's argument and had to scour left and right to find something to prove him wrong.
I don't know if I've influenced many people, but I know that I myself have been influenced by many people here. Facepunch is such an amalgam of opinions, topics, discussions and interests that it'd be impossible to go in a thread and not come out a tiny bit better. Of course, I like to think that whenever I "win" an argument, the person across doesn't just ignore everything I've said and become even more entrenched in their opinion, but who knows? It's very uncommon for people to come outright and say "you're right, I was wrong and now I agree with you", but when they do, it's a very pleasant feeling.
I definitely would've been a different person if I had not been such an active poster here. I think it's for the better too - some of the opinions I held before would disgust me now. There's no way to know for sure if it was just me maturing as a person, but I like to think that a lot of it is because I was able to express those stupid opinions and have someone destroy them.
Oh, and I have to say that writing so much here has improved my English immeasurably. I'm now studying in the UK and a tiny bit of that is thanks to this forum.
I didn't mean for this post to become so long, and I guess I'm getting a bit sentimental, but jesus - I've spent so much time on this forum - it must've changed me. Hopefully I've changed it a bit too.
Hating on atheism is currently the trending thing, though
Immature and/or ignorant people on both sides.
It doesn't matter what you believe, or whether it's true or not.
What matters is how much good your beliefs are bringing to the Universe.
I'm glad other people recognize how bad SH is. I tried posting there the other day on the manspreading thread but even by the time I had posted it was "lol tumblrincation feminazi SJWs :^)" being spewed even though that isn't a thing that anybody on tumblr actually cares about because someone was like wait no there's like a legit reason. No feminists outside of the super extreme radical ones that are just as set in their beliefs as people in SH are actually care about it either because it took them 2 seconds to understand why men actually spread their legs and then the issue was dropped. Like holy shit SH is a cesspool and I can't stand looking at it for extended periods.
That aside, yeah. Most of the time I go to post in SH I stop myself because they're worse than the people they think they're making fun of. Or when I'm posting in topics like love advice or shit that gets you mad I get halfway through a post and then realize it's either not worth it or I know what the answer to my questions are I just had to write it out to realize it.
I find myself writing lots of posts about WWI, but then I realize no one but me gives a shit :(
no person can change their opinion; all discussion is meaningless

You're factually wrong.

I don't really think that's true. The vast majority of Facepunch adheres to a rigid profile of beliefs and opinions. After a while you really start to notice it, especially in SH where the groupthink is strong.
Generally speaking, Facepunch:
-Is strongly pro-police/military
-Is militantly pro-gun
-Overwhelmingly favors pot legalization
-Overwhelmingly favors marriage equality
It's pretty much exactly what you expect from a population that is overwhelmingly young, male, at least somewhat affluent, and probably mostly white. Basically, people that play video games and go post about them on the internet. It's really not a very diverse place.

I think calling it groupthink is probably actually a bit inaccurate. If you were to keep track of the exact users you'd probably find that while the majority tends towards what's seen as FP's general stance on a subject a lot of the people supporting any given idea will change around quite a bit.
I'd call it a hivemind. One person says one thing and everyone else agrees with them. Seen on loads of threads...

Not every opinion has to do something with one of those topics? I'm not just talking about political discussions.

I'd still say it's not. It may look that way but what you're getting is the people who agree are being vocal about it while the opposition is being quiet. Usually because a reasonable person is going to see support like that and feel like voicing their opinion is only going to get them shat upon. Why do you think conservatives here don't post very often? Those who try tend to get shat upon by the more vocal opposition. (This isn't addressing the validity of either side's opinions by the way.) While liberal posters on the site do outnumber the conservative posters there's still quite a few conservatives.
Often I'll type up a post for a SH thread and just abandon it last minute. Other than that I don't think there's any particular topic I post about too much. Or even post much at all really.
I just post when i have something to say. I just don't like talking about stuff that i have no knowledge of or just simply i don't give two shits about.
I've basically had to stop posting about old electronics in general because even though that's my specialty.....I'm repeatedly told to get a life.
That's a shame because in a lot of aspects, older technologies are superior. i.e. CRT's still out-perform LCD's, Plasmas etc.
BTW, I enjoy reading your posts about old electronics. Fuck those assholes.
A lot of times I'm just not in the mood to argue so I'll go a bit without posting. Sometimes I'll keep out of discussions because I'm not well informed (gamergate) or because I don't feel like arguing the same points with the same people over and over again and getting nowhere or being on the unpopular side (feminism, social justice).
I did this so much that I stopped posting on Facepunch for over a year.
Hello everyone :v:

That's not true and I don't think you have an awesome ground to speak on it.
Point one, I can point you at the Fergusson thread where a lot of people rose to speak with contempt on Police Officers and others did the converse.
The second point, I can just point to the fact that any gun control debate is just that, a debate.
Third, I'm not sure where you got that idea.
Fourth, that doesn't seem true to me, if only because of the weight of bans people get for homophobia or whatever phobia is recently trendy.
So, citation needed? Was there a demographics survey run that I missed?
I just stay out of politics.
I used to post a lot more about news and debate, not just here but in other places, but I found it was getting me wound up in real life even when I was doing completely irrelevant things. So yeah, I don't do much of that anymore, here or anywhere else.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
