Modern death/black (read: FAGGOT) metal has ruined it for me. Metal used to mean something, and wasn't some douchebag trying to be LOL HARDCOREXXXX and screaming Mary Had a Little fucking Lamb into a microphone, convincing others it's anything else, while their drummer is playing his tom and bass drums with no rhythm whatsoever, as fast as he can. Then there's the guitarist that sounds like he's trying to rip strings off, and the bassist that is non-existent except for a solo that does not fit in any way, shape, or form and adds nothing to the already piece of shit song. Plus the album covers look like their drawn by an emo kid with a fucking twitch. Prog and Alt metal are the only things keeping any semblance of music. I can't really make judgement on a genre although I allow myself to make a judgement about pop because there is a trend of it being just terrible. Good songs do make it on the top 40, but the majority have terrible lyrics, uninspired music, cliche sound and arrangement, and likely wouldn't sound good without all of the production put into it. Just to define pop, here is something from wiki.
