meh I disagree, I used to listen to rap and even some country, but I stopped because I couldn't associate with it. I'm a white middle-class American, I don't want to listen to rap that deals with the ghetto and gangster lifestyle because I can't associate with it, neither do I want to. Some rap artists rap about more inspiring lyrics but those are usually race-related social issues, even though I can appreciate them to an extent, I can't associate with them, therefore I'm not very interested in listening to them. Is that wrong? I bet you have the same mentality, people listen to what they can associate to either superficially (in most cases) or by what the lyrics mean to them.
The same is said for Country music.
In this situation I'd say "lyrics don't make a song", but in rap's case, they kind of do. Massive part of the song.
The beat is also important because it needs to keep a solid supporting rhythm. It isn't anything that could stand alone though.

Mainly the reason I have rap music. Some have really catchy beats to drum along to.

"I can't listen to that type of music because that is not my culture."
So every person listening to rap is a thug, yes? Every person listening to reggae is a crackpot? Every Hendrix or Beatle fan is a hippee, yes?
You can't listen to it because you see yourself as "better" than them.
It is all crystal clear. :v:

I don't like most of it because there is no good guitar work or complicated drumming to listen to.
God I love it when metal fans fling shit at each other. Why all the hate man? Why all the hate?
You stole my line motherfucker that shit does not fly :colbert:
And we hate when people with no love for the genre attack it, for the simple reason they are at a distance, they listen to one metal band and think they are now allowed to proceed to talk shit about the entire genre without reprise.
No one takes kindly to that.

Implying age is a factor, you listened to metal cause you thought it was rebellious, I'm 19, at uni, and looking to get a job, I still listen to metal nearly constantly.
And who the fuck listens to anything because it's cool? You listen to it cause you enjoy it, or you don't listen to it.
Oh god bravehat you are so easy
Implying that I give a fuck :v:
Wrong, music taste is derived from a person's level of understanding of what they're listening to and why they like it. People who can't describe their preferences beyond "it rocks" and "it sucks" have bad taste.
The reason "I like everything but rap and country" is seen as a catchphrase for people with bad taste in music is twofold:
1) Rap and country are relatively accessible genres so to say you like "everything" besides that suggests the speaker simply hasn't heard most music
2) The fact that it's always rap and country (and the speaker a middle-class white teenager) suggests they don't think about music very much and that "their tastes" are largely shaped by the people around them. Contempt for the lower class, and by association their music, is the determining factor
Which isn't to say that having good taste means you will like rap and country. It just means that your own prejudices will play less of a role in your appreciation for music, allowing your more sensitive ACTUAL preferences to develop.
Am I funny yet I'm implying that I'm better and older than all of you lololol get it you're all the dumb ones. You kiddies just don't "get it" like I do.
Honestly, do you ever read any of your posts and think about how much of a douchebag they make you look like?
I'm 20, a college student, I have a job, I've been through my share of shit for my age, and I have some truly great friends. And the overwhelming majority of what I listen to, is metal.
So trying to pull that age/superiority shit, is just childish.
Fuck you Sporkfire I'm 16 I listen to metal and I have a job
I try to listen to good bands. The genre doesn't matter much to me, although it does in some sense because I'd like to avoid the noise genre.
Genre does matter to me a lot. I will not listen to anything that doesn't end with "tronica" and start with "folk"
Everything else is shiite

I was that teenager.
damnit guys this is a music bashing thread, don't take it too personal. I listen to a fat Irish guy sing about his feelings while industrial and trance music pumps in the background.

Is that why you don't play videogames? Because you can't "associate" with wizards and military commandos?
It's not because it's pop, but because it's been incredibly commercialized. Most music associated with "pop" started to become less inspired towards the 90s because of commercialization. The same thing happened to rap as nowadays , its mostly composed of uninspired lyrics that deal with fuckin' bitchs n' hoes and popping niggers.
I wish there was a way to show you how stupid this post is

Music and video-games are a very different medium for me, I don't treat music and games in the same way.

nice cop-out, are you arguing that commercialization doesn't create less-inspiring subject matter?

Why?
And no, if I wanted to have my narrow worldview parroted back at me ad nauseam and never learn anything about the world then I would listen to nerdcore.
