Why?
And no, if I wanted to have my narrow worldview parroted back at me ad nauseam and never learn anything about the world then I would listen to nerdcore.
Because I usually listen to music because of the emotions it evokes or what I can associate with and when I mean by associate I don't mean by what social-clique I'm in but how I feel about it in perspective. I play games solely for the entertainment factor, nothing else.

So it's just a coincidence that you don't listen to music by social groups you're prejudiced toward?
Well if you're referring to how I dislike rap because what I usually hear from it is misogynistic and consumerist, then yeah I'm prejudiced dude.

Can't people listen to music for an entertainment factor? I've written up a whole post about this analogy before, but think of music to be like a movie and all the parts of it to be actors. Some music is like an action movie with spectacular stunts and effects. Its purpose is to make you say "woah cool, this is awesome". It isn't at all trying to move your emotions.
Some music is meant to convey more of a message in which the music can be said to be an actor and how well the music conveys the message is essentially how good of an actor the musicans are. To put that a bit into perspective, you can have two people read the same exact lines with the same exact tone and pitch and timing, and if one is a bad actor and one is a good actor, there will be a large difference in how well they convey the emotion.
Some people hate action flicks because there is no emotional connection there, it is just a lot of cool explosions and special effects. Some people love action movies. Some people hate more emotional movies. Many people have great reasons for their preferences. But if you're like me, all you want to be is entertained and there isn't anything wrong with that because that is the point of most all media, to entertain.

Yea, I don't mean to bring people down if they listen to it for the entertainment factor. I was just putting out why I listened to music because th89 asked. I'd be lying if there wasn't some music I listened to just for the entertainment factor.
I'd just like to interject here and say that my musical tastes are superior to all of everyone else's, and everyone else should be ashamed to listen to the garbage they call music

you mean you enjoy being ignorant and close minded towards everybody elses musical opinion without giving it a second thought or thinking what their side of the music they enjoy and for what reasons they enjoy it
i mean i go with a very neutral attitude (or try to) towards all genres but your thinking is pretty fucked in my book

Your misrepresenting what I'm saying. I'm just merely saying I'm more interested in music I can associate to. Thats basic human nature, that doesn't mean I'm close-minded or discard music that I don't associate with right away. Now your just pulling things from your ass.
Well if you're referring to how I dislike rap because what I usually hear from it is misogynistic and consumerist, then yeah I'm prejudiced dude.
Games are misogynistic and consumerist. So is the vast majority of rock and other genres. That's not why you dislike rap, it's an excuse.
[editline]8th December 2010[/editline]
Also you probably mean "relate to" not "associate with" because that's not what associate means
I don't think I have to bad of a taste in music its just I can't explain why I like it, how do you explain why you like a certain album or what not?
you probably mean "relate to" not "associate with" because that's not what associate means
Yeah, I should have worded it better and used relate instead of associate. I can imagine there being some confusion caused by that, as it seems that way.
Games are misogynistic and consumerist. So is the vast majority of rock and other genres. That's not why you dislike rap, it's an excuse.
Doesn't mean the games I play are misogynistic, other than GTA I can't even name any that are. Consumerism exisits in many games, but often times its a necessary component (MMOs for instance) and besides games have almost always been purely entertainment. People can argue that rap is just entertainment as well and thats fine, but obviously people listen to music for different reasons. I'm not a person who listens to music solely for "entertainment".
TH89, I know those themes are in genres outside of rap. I'm just saying they're the most prevalent in them. I don't look for "insightful" lyrics all the time, but if a lot of a genre has stupid shit about fucking bitches and how egotistical you are then yeah I think it's fucking retarded. Lastly if you're implying whatever I may listen to has those themes, then you're wrong.

Stop being an ignorant asstard and drag the waters for some good shit.
Hey guys. Heard of deadmau5? It's a perfect example of music that doesnt have to have a meaning. Comeon, most of his songs have names like bored of canada, or Get In The Wagon, Pig. They usually dont even involve lyrics, there is no meaning to it other than ear sex(and maybe to tell us Deadmau5 doesn't like Canada anymore). And it works, he does have a decent fan base, and in my OPINION, it's good music. Who cares about lyrics, unless you're the kind of guy who listens to BLur and tries to decipher the fuck out of every word.

Who hasn't?
I'm enthusiastic whenever electronic music gets some popularity in the States, but I just can't bring myself to listen to deadmau5 it, sounds like souless house/techno music to me. He seems really boring from the videos of his live gigs, he goes on about like a glorified DJ. No synthesizers, no singers, no dancers, just a DJ with a laptop turning knobs on his mixer. That kind of stuff makes electronic music look bad.

I don't see what's so great about deadmau5, seems pretty boring to me from what I've heard.
And I think "Bored of Canada" is just a reference to Boards of Canada.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems to be it.

yeah I thought so too, but I swear to god if he named it that as a pot shot against them.. :saddowns:
Yeah I dunno. I personally like him tho, he does split opinions pretty powerfully. Still goes to show my point I recon.

he's like the nu metal of electronic music
I like Deadmau5. I find his music relaxing.
he's like the nu metal of electronic music
meh hes not even worthy to be bestowed of that honour. He just plays repackaged house music.
this thread has went down surprisingly well
I can't stand electronic/techno/trance music. Just sounds like it doesn't have soul.
spork is a professional troll

It's basically "Sporkfire's 'Why do people like metal', Part 2"
Sporkfire is hereby declared as the music section's fool.
Here, here.
You know what, I've forced myself to listen to deadmau5 for over an hour now and I have to say it kinda grows on you.
It's not my style, but some of his songs are pretty nicely done.
This one for instance is really repetitive, but you just have to treat the repetition the same way you treat repetition in Daft Punk. I still think hes pretty lame when playing live though, hes just too static :colbert:

That sounds quite reasonable.
Thank you, but the thread is not about me.
I don't think anyone has bashed jazz yet. So...
I dislike smooth jazz. It's too smooth. I don't think most of it really compares well with all the other types of jazz.

Crunchy Jazz is the best. All of those warm, salty nuts in your mouth... Oh wait.
