Holy shit this is such a classic, I loved every minute of it. There are even some sci-fi tropes that it had that aren't seen until way later, like one-liners, such as when they see [sp]the pile of skeletons and the woman says "Well there's your missing persons"[/sp]. Love this movie
Matt Damon gets flak? why?
I think people say he's bland? I don't know really, I have a coworker who hates him with a passion and I really don't understand it.

he is jealous that's why.
Just rewatched The Machinist because Paramount put it on youtube.
Still great, I'd pretty much forgotten how it ended so I got to experience it again.
Realized how much I like Psychological movies, can anyone recommend anything similar?
Ong-Bak
I just watched this movie for the second time a few days ago because I like it so much. The action stunts are really satisfying to watch and I love the simple hero's journey type story. Only foreign film I've ever watched and probably the only real martial arts movie that I have watched. I was wondering if anyone has watched the sequels, and if they are any good?

Naw LOTR is boring shit.

Memories of Murder
10/10, damn good movie. I should watch more Korean cinema.
[editline]1st January 2016[/editline]
Yeah, it's pretty good, a true neo-noir. It crosses flawlessly the border between slapstick funny and plain creepy. A film that seems simple at the surface but it's a great piece of cinema, partially thanks to the great direction.
It's a direct inspiration to Zodiac and Brick, if you liked those two films then this one is a must-watch.

Any other movies like this? Foreign or not, I really enjoyed the film after seeing the positive comments.
hateful eight - no i won't rate this 8/8 for the irony, but you bet your ass it's fucking gr8 m8.
if you can, seriously see this in the 70mm version. having an overture and intermission, and a program book give you that great feel of what the old days of the theater was like for longer movies.
as for the film itself, to me it felt like a western pulp fiction. imo it was better than django unchained (and borrows some actors from it in more prominent roles). my friend wasn't a fan of it, but i don't think he's into serious westerns, just the more guns blazing type.

Really wish that the closest theater showing it in 70mm wasn't an hour away.
Really wish that the closest theater showing it in 70mm wasn't an hour away.
i got lucky, a theater about a half hour away was showing it. otherwise my other option would be a theater about an hour away.
Really wish that the closest theater showing it in 70mm wasn't an hour away.
For me I would have to buy a passport and drive three hours or drive six hours without a passport. And that's just the trip there. Really fucking stupid how it isn't in more cities.
Closest one to me is 7 hours away. I didn't realise 70mm cinemas were so rare.
live in london so im seeing it 70mm at the leicester square odeon next week

ong bak 2 is pretty good as well, the fights are really well done and keep up the quality.
i've only heard bad things about ong bak 3 so you might skip that one.
oh, and if you like the lead actor/martial artist I suggest you check out "the protector", it's another good one of his.
We have a 70mm in Indy but they won't show it so I can't see it
I think that the more I sit on it, I like Hateful Eight just as much as Django Unchained for totally different reasons. I really wouldn't mind if Tarantino did a third western. I just want him to do Kill Bill Volume 3 as his final film, it would fit so perfectly.
[editline]2nd January 2016[/editline]
Come on Tarantino, you mentioned making it more than a few times, don't let us down. I just hope the Hateful Eight criticism isn't getting to him.
ideally i'd want his next two films to be killer crows (but i don't think this will ever get made) and the next kill bill.
also, still waiting for the whole bloody affair. such bullshit that it hasn't been released by now.
I saw it in 70mm just about an hour away. Really wish I liked the film more because I can't deny that it looked great and the opening shot was perfect

I highly recomend Bong Jo Ho's other movies, Mother and Snowpiercer are fantastic.

I saw Charulata just now, which is probably considered one of the best indian movies of all time. Beautiful movie, but I think I some subtext. Apparently the wife becomes attracted to her husband's cousin but that wasn't apparent to me. Good movie still.

90% that his next film is also going to be a western. Then Kill Bill 3 as his directional "epitaph"
But I still call bullshit at that "10 films and that's it" he tries to sell.
Maybe he's just going to be "done" doing his own films at 10, and maybe move to collaborative projects later.
Del Toro and Tarantino working on a movie, anyone?
Just got back from seeing The Hateful Eight - 8/10
3 hours just flew past. Honestly, my problems with this movie are both minor and can be counted one hand. Mannix, for instance, is straight-up annoying for most of the film. In a loathsome cast, I hated him for the wrong reasons, until the end. There's also the issue of[sp]the reveal of Jody being under the floorboards coming out of nowhere.[/sp]I'd expect some foreshadowing or hinting to it but there was nothing, it bugs me a bit. Finally, something that just puzzles me;[sp]if Warren knew Bob was putting on a scam from the moment he opened his mouth, why did he wait so long to act on it? He pretty much spells it out how Annie not hiring Mexicans was the first and dead giveaway, he had no reason to suspect the others being in cahoots with him, what reason could he have for not taking care of him when he could?[/sp]

You gotta remember, he's [sp]a Bounty Hunter, he can't just go around killing people on hunches, else he could be the one hung up at the end of it all. He had his suspicions but instead of rashly acting out on it, he waited until he could gather more evidence. I guess it all came to a climax and forced him to act when the whole coffee poisoning issue arose. That's the justification I made for it, at least.
Or maybe he was biding his time to see if he could draw others out of their act? By watching to see who Bob is chummy with, he could figure out who else was an imposter. If he killed Bob outright, he would be cutting off any further clues as to who else is a potential threat. Once the coffee was poisoned, it was safe for him to assume the three he put up against the wall were threats, and made it easier to keep an eye on them and - as a result - keep himself safe. But it all backfired cause of Jody under the floorboards.[/sp]

The problem I have with this is that[sp]he goes on for quite a bit about how Annie disliked Mexicans (which, come to think of it, raises an eyebrow when the gang walks into the haberdashery and Annie doesn't bat an eye at Bob, despite his clear hispanicness), as demonstrated by the story about the sign, and about how it's a key point in him realizing that Bob is hosting a scam, unless I'm remembering that last part wrong. The only sign he gets that there's multiple culprits at work is when the coffee poisoning happens and he gets a bunch more clues about things being off beforehand, none of which rule out the possibility of a lone man. Was he just taking a bet, just hoping that despite the evidence he had seen not suggesting, Bob wasn't working alone? And that his co-conspirators would just happen to make themselves known?[/sp]

only 9 quid with student id.
just got back from force awakens at the huge waterloo imax. film was p good, largely forgettable but more competent than it had to be to redeem the franchise. the visuals were the standout element for me, certain sequences were breathtaking on a screen so big, in particular the escape from jakku which was displayed in full size imax format. incredibly immersive. han solos [sp] death felt appropriate, i dont feel hes longer necessary in the franchise beyond this film. [/sp] overall pretty decent stuff
I saw the hateful eight and I'd recommend it just because of how fucking satisfying the climax was
[Sp]NO DEAL[/sp]
Just tried to see why Jurassic World grossed more money than like any film ever...and I don't see it. Or rather I do see it and I'm disappointed in humans. It just lacked style... it lacked style where the original did fine! They had a perfect template to work from and most of the movie was flat, the camerawork was boring, and the colors were basic. I probably fall outside of the target demographic even though I'm only 19, but the kids didn't engage me, the parents were stereotypes, Claire was hot but her character never really went anywhere (she briefly wanted to prove that she is tough, but never took off her heels?), the guy was a walking nature character template, and the "bad guys" weren't really that bad but the movie wouldn't stop playing them out to be like that. Just for fun (it's a blockbuster) I tried to search the movie for some kind of ulterior messages or morals, maybe some commentary on GMOs or on nature, but I couldn't find anything coherent except that everything is bigger in the ocean. The raptors and Chris seemed to flip back and forth between wanting to say that nature is uncontrollable and shouldn't be romanticized, then swinging around and basing entire plotpoints ([sp]raptors and t-rex fighting on "their side"[/sp]) around a romanticized, humanized depiction of nature.
And the gore, or utter lack of, was very jarring. Compared to a really gory movie of the same scale, there's something way creepier about a movie that refuses to show blood and gore, but depicts the deaths of some introduced characters alongside widespread violence. Even the violence in the main square felt uncharacteristically brutal instead of feeling "real." As an aside, movies in which all humans except for the main character "heroes" are utterly useless are so frustrating to watch. Movies like this are the exact opposite of "Humanity, Fuck Yeah" type sci-fi, which is OK, but the movie simultaneously lacked any gritty mood or any larger themes about nature, so what the fuck!?
It was somewhat enjoyable sometimes, if only because it was interesting to see how surprisingly attracted to Bryce Howard I am amidst the obvious, raw action. I can't handle this blockbuster shit.
6/10
you rated it too high, jurassic world is a 4/10 at best, and that's only for the casting.
like the new star wars it rides entirely on nostalgia, and then tries to make up for it with some half-assed new addition to the series.
unlike star wars, jurassic world tries to throw in meta jokes and personify the internet, and it fails horribly.
