Oh. Good to know. Maybe I'll just be avoiding any musicals from now on.
gotta watch Singing in the Rain and West Side Story legitimately great films in general, not just great musicals
Films, especially experimental ones, aren't always required to strictly follow a narrative. I kind of see Upstream Color as a visual/aural poem rather than a story, and the beauty in being a viewer is that you can interpret whatever you want from what you see/hear It's OK to not like a film, but it's another thing to say that it doesn't mean anything - something being "art" or not isn't decided by the viewer, but by the creator
Yeah, fair point. I just expected something along the lines of Primer and its mind-bending plot, given that it was from the same guy.
gotta watch Singing in the Rain and West Side Story legitimately great films in general, not just great musicals
Yeah, I think I'll make an exception for them. From what I understand, they're widely praised classics. West Side Story is even Michael Bay's favorite movie. I was thinking about avoiding something more like Sweeney Todd, which kind of looks like it has the same style as Les Misérables.
Saw Sicario a while back too, but never commented on it.. I can't think of any complaints really. The plot was clear, pacing was fine, and I didn't even see the ending twist coming from too far away. At all. In the end though, I felt like the main goal of this movie was literally a power fantasy. A power fantasy of you [sp]getting to single-handedly kill a drug boss who wronged you, along with his entire family, AND getting to see the priceless look on his face.[/sp] Yay! [editline]5th January 2016[/editline] But it was a good movie alright. Speeding it up by some % didn't even cross my mind.
Fuck Requiem for a Dream I understand it's trying to put you in the shoes of a junkie, but damn was it jarring and unnerving. The nails-across-a-chalkboard music in some scenes just caused me to outright skip minutes of the movie at a time. I don't get the people who rated it high. It had a high emotional impact on me, but overall, it was fucking whack. I've tried two times in the past to watch this movie, and every time I quit around the 40 minute mark. Wish I didn't bother watching it today.
First you post while in the middle of Empire Strikes Back and now you say that you skipped through minutes of Requiem at a time? Just watch the moviiiiiiiie
I finished it! I posted that after I finished. The bits of the movie that upset me the most were how Harry kept letting Marion down, and what she went through just to get another fix. That was messed up, especially whilst Harry managed to nab himself some drugs to sate his own need without helping her (but I guess that's just the movie showing how selfish drugs can make you). Also, the doctor completely screwing over his mother and leaving her dealing with psychosis really got to me, along with the ECT. But other than that, I really really didn't enjoy the movie. The only reason I watched it all the way through was to see what happened with Marion and Harry's mother :(
the entire of cineworld cinemas in the UK wont be playing the hateful eight due to disagreements with the publisher what a disaster lmao. that includes picturehouse cinemas. this is a pretty big deal, gotta wonder if star wars has anything to do with it
Chappie 4/10 god dammit i shouldnt like this movie as much as i do, its crap but it could have been so good Neil really has a problem with making his themes subtle and real. His villains are borderline cartoons and the tone of this was everywhere, like, you may think sometimes this is for children but then a guy gets cut in half and splashed on a wall...come on i had this idea about what if it started when [sp] Deon is dying and chappie saves him [/sp] then they make another plot idea and we start guessing what happened before or something Or just take the scumbags out and its about the robot learning to be human, as a child, and some big corporation trying to take him out because fear or whatever, fucking anything but Die ANTwood
Die Antwoord's acting didn't bother me because for the most part they were acting like themselves. What really annoyed me was the movie kept telling me that I should care and sympathize with them (them playing criminals corrupting an innocent robot in this movie).

It's really confusing. Do you not differentiate between "this move makes me feel bad" and "this movie is bad"?
It's one of my favorite movies of all time. The acting, the writing, the editing, the soundtrack, everything is 10/10 and serves to make the viewer uncomfortable and it works every time. That being said, it's one of those movies you could just watch once and then never again because it sticks with you so much. Sarah's actress was nominated for an Oscar but didn't win. Easily one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history for me. She was brilliant in that movie. Also, sorry if I came off as shitty, I just really, really like this movie.
Nah man you didn't. The great thing about this thread is everyone is really passionate about movies.
You keep saying you don't like the movie but all of the things you write are positive things about the movie. It's really confusing. Do you not differentiate between "this move makes me feel bad" and "this movie is bad"?
Just because the movie evoked a strong sense of sadness doesn't necessarily mean I enjoyed it. Like yeah, kudos to the movie for hitting me hard emotionally and making me connect with two of the characters. Overall, I didn't find the movie enjoyable. It's hard not to feel kind of awful when you witness a girl prostituting herself out for drugs and a harmless old lady drive herself into psychosis out of a need to "look good" for a make-believe television appearance.

I enjoy it on the basis of how well a movie made me feel so uncomfortable with just music and pictures on a screen. The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino, 2015) 7/10 You know what I disliked the most about Inglourious Basterds were that some dialogues were way too long, too stretched. Obviously, The H8ful 8 has this problem... only worse. The dialogues are even longer, and it's all happening in the same room. I feel that this script would have better suited a play. That said, it's of course very well directed, edited, and acted. Very tense in the right places. But... it could have easily lasted half an hour less. Or an hour less. It wasn't boring... It was just long.
I feel that this script would have better suited a play.
What's the difference between a play and a movie other than the camera?
i enjoyed the dialogue as much as i enjoyed the violence

It's what makes it good. not saying you're putting down the movie from what you've said, but if someone actually used that as a criticism he would be totally missing the point.
i enjoyed the dialogue as much as i enjoyed the violence
i went into the theater only expecting this and that's why i enjoyed the shit out of it.
Goddddd I wanna see Anomalisa so badly because Charlie Kaufman is one of my favorite filmmakers and Synecdoche New York is a super personal film to me but it's not coming to theaters in my state at all Gonna have to wait to see that and Carol until they come out on Blu-Ray, I suppose

one of his best scenes IMO is like 20 straight minutes of dialogue in the bar in Inglorious Basterds thats where his genius really shows
I don't think you should be watching Tarantino movies if you don't like long dialogue scenes. Cause that's like, what all of his movies are.
I think my issue with Tarantino movies isn't that there's a lot of dialogue, it's that I never give a shit about his characters. To say he's an emotionless director would be stupid, but I never connect with the characters on any emotional level. Uma Thurman is the only actress in any of his movies that I actually cared about. I'm not sure if I know why this is an issue. I always feel like his movies are directed at people with vastly different values than me, and not in a prudish way but in how characters don't seem to give a shit even about themselves. Nothing matters to them; visible subtlelty of emotion can't exist in a harsh environment like that. It's almost like his characters are self-aware that their lives don't matter because "it's only a movie" Granted I've only seen Kill Bill, Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction (maybe 1 more can't remember), but it doesn't have me with any better understanding of why people jack off to his name alone. I thought The Hateful Eight trailer looked like ass and I couldn't so much as even tell what it was supposed to be about... but Tarantino!
modern trailers don't do justice to tarantino's movies, just saying

tarantino movies tend to be black comedy levels of hard-to-advertise

I'm really not too interested in seeing The Revenant but if someone wanted to go see it with me, I would
I'm interested in The Revenant because I found Glass' story fascinating when I heard about it whilst visiting Yellowstone. But it sounds like it's really brutal which is putting me off.
I'm really not too interested in seeing The Revenant but if someone wanted to go see it with me, I would
the issue i've run into is that i was going to see it with my friend but another guy overheard us planning it and wants to come but i dont want him to come with us still super excited to see this/hateful eight
[sp]I think because he didn't necessarily want to straight up kill Rey, but test her skill and then tempt her to join the dark side.[/sp]
[sp]Ren isn't even a Sith tho. The Sith were destroyed with Palpatine. Ren is just a half-trained, arrogant dark-side user who was wounded by a gun that sent everyone else flying into the air. plus what kind of Star Wars movie would have if we just straight up killed all the main characters at the end.[/sp]
[sp] I feel like that makes little sense, since he could have tried to sweet-talk to her when he first captured her, and convinced her then. Instead of treating her like shit, and then offering her training after he had done things that guaranteed would have turned her against him. [/sp]
[sp]Rey barely recognized her own force abilities when she was first captured, let alone Ren.[/sp]
