Inside Llewyn Davis - 9/10. The Coen Brothers never cease to impress me. Oscar Isaac was fantastic, the rest of the cast also did really well, but there were 2 aspects that stood out for me: cinematography and soundtrack. Inside Llewyn Davis is visually stunning and that soundtrack...been listening to it daily for weeks now! One of my favorite movies from 2013. The Wind Rises 8/10 - The animation alone makes it worth seeing. I thought the story was good as well.
Primer: ???/10 this film is either true genius or utter shit and I still haven't been able to figure out which after watching 12 times
Bad Education: The Movie... was simply ok, although I think you've got to be British to get most of the gags and jokes, even the plot and the stereotypes of the characters. Also, it got far worse at the halfway point and there were a few plot/serious moments that bothered me, e.g [sp]the mum who tried to ruin the trip, friendships and who put a fucking tracking chip in her son being redeemed in the minds of the characters, and probably in the writer's mind, the audience.[/sp]
Yep. I actually enjoyed Ghost Protocol a lot, especially it's portrayal of russians. It's one of the rare movies that doesn't fuck it up.
Especially that incredibly useless russian wannabe agent that literally fucks everything up and does nothing throughout the whole film just to appear in the very end to say some hilariously pathetic phrases. Even some background characters (like that guard in the scene [sp]with a projector wall[/sp]) were ten times more charismatic and entertaining than this dude. But yeah, all in all it's not as bad as it could be, at least they don't wear ushankas there like they did in that hitman movie.
Primer: ???/10 this film is either true genius or utter shit and I still haven't been able to figure out which after watching 12 times
The movie gives no fucks in telling you whats going on, and its kinda cool in a way. Despite being frustrating.

Stalker - This was the second Tarkovsky film I watched, after Solaris about a month ago. Solaris I thought was okayish and didn't expect much more from Stalker, but was surprised to find out Stalker was a far superior film. Despite being science fiction the film didn't feel a need to explain 100% everything with bullshit jargon and instead seemed to revolve a lot more on characters and themes and the scifi backdrop was merely just a setting. Visuals and audio were absolutely great. Especially the audio that manged to perfectly blend background noise with artificial sounds. Great long takes that were visually interesting. If you like art films I'd say it is worth a watch, but to many viewers they would likely get bored throughout the two hours and forty something minutes.
Stalker is incredible, definitely Tarkovsky at his best I think Stalker is his "best" film but I enjoy The Mirror the most, if that makes any sense
The Gift 4/5 Me and a couple of friends saw this and damn if it wasn't surprising. A, I went in with little to no expectations, and B, I had no idea that Joel Edgarton wrote and directed as well as acted in the movie. For a first film, he nails tension, not to mention his suitably odd performance. Jason Bateman was also surprisingly good, especially considering he's not playing a comedic character. All in all, it's an incredibly solid movie and a decently tense thriller.
Apocalypse Now - I've been putting off watching this film for a long time due to its length and the mood I would like to be in to watch it. It was absolutely amazing and I really don't have much more in depth to say. I definitely will check out the Redux sometime.
Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog: 7/10 It was funny, sure, and had a pretty interesting concept, but I don't really see it as the work of genius other people see it as.
I definitely will check out the Redux sometime.
don't do this instead you should watch Hearts of Darkness

That was anti-climatic, because I was really curious as to how the Zone kills. The fact that they don't even go into the room either also makes it anti-climatic.[/sp] But other than that, yes it's pretty good. I still prefer Solaris though.

I always figured that it sorta either was supposed to represent not giving into temptation or not taking a high-level risk. I'm assuming it's the latter since it play into more of the film's themes of not ever knowing anything, and when you think you know something, something's wrong[/sp]
also[sp]having the characters just walk in the room and getting their wish, showing crazy things that happen in the zone, weird sci-fi stuff, would have gone against to what tarkovsky was going for in stalker. especially when you consider the entire movie is mostly built around the fact it doesn't show you the magic of the zone beside the girl and the scene in the sand area. making a sci-fi film absent of typical sci-fi stuff and themes was the reason why tarkovsky made stalker in the first place. it's the complete opposite to solaris.[/sp] [editline]27th August 2015[/editline]
from what I can gather [sp]you either lose yourself in the zone and starve to death, and if you get to the goal, the room, of the zone, you kill yourself out of... madness, I guess?
don't do this instead you should watch Hearts of Darkness
the extra redux scenes are excellent. but ye hearts of darkness documentary is v good.
If they took out the pointless plantation scene Redux would be better, that part literally adds nothing to the movie, that characters don't change because of it, and it's never mentioned again. It's a fine scene on its own but it just adds nothing to the story or the characters.
I felt that [sp]through the words and how they all talked about it a greater sense of danger was created than actually showing any harm could create.[/sp]
[sp]Yes it did feel dangerous, those scenes were tense, but at the very end, I actually wondered if the Zone was dangerous at all. I thought maybe it was a hoax? Maybe they're just illusions? Maybe people kill each other for some reason, something in the air or something? But when I thought those questions would be answered, the film comes to its end. It was a bit disappointing, but mostly confusing to me.[/sp]

Like [sp]the entire movie he and his squad are becoming dehumanized and physically getting all dirty and stuff, and then randomly he gets to meet some clean French people, stay in a luxurious house for a night, eat nice prepared food, and he gets to bang some hot girl. Then it just cuts back to his life sucking the next scene.[/sp]
The Past - 8/10 I really really really love this director's writing. Just like A Separation it has such great written characters and their relationships that unfold to the viewer in such a beautiful natural way. And both movies their last shots are so GOOD
Yeah that scene sucked, it was boring and out of place.

[editline]28th August 2015[/editline]
the entire movie he and his squad are becoming dehumanized and physically getting all dirty and stuff
the movie itself is about descent into madness and them stopping off at a 5 star hotel full of french crazies is not irrelevant.
there is nothing inherently wrong with redux but it's kinda unnecessary filler that's not really all that worth seeing i mean if you wanna run through it again redux is cool but the original cut is good enough imo
Get Hard (2015) not too bad, had some funny bits in but just a generic comedy with a happy ending as per usual.
幸福时光 Happy Times(2000) 9/10 One of the better foreign movies I've seen, I really love tragic comedy. The pacing is fantastic as you might expect from a film made in 2000.
The Land Before Time - 9/10 A VHS classic that I watched so many times during my childhood that it's impossible to be objective about. Still, it's been easily a decade since I last watched it and I have to say it still holds up very well. The whole movie has a sort of mythic quality to it, with a beautifully rendered world and detailed animation. Sometimes the plot moves a bit too quick, but other times the movie knows when to stop and breathe with a brief little interlude to set a scene. Even the choral soundtrack adds to the experience - although it takes place on Earth, it's truly a strange and dangerous place. The Land Before Time is still a wonderful animated movie.
Grand Piano 9/10 The film is wonderful. While I was expecting there to be a bigger mystery, it was still fun. The pace of the film is splendid, not a boring moment in sight. Had a blast watching it and I urge you to check it out. Thanks YMS for another great movie recommendation!
Jurassic world 9.5/10 I enjoyed it but I felt like something was missing
Jurassic world 9.5/10 I enjoyed it but I felt like something was missing
yeah there wasn't a good movie anywhere in there
