what reference is that

Before entering the bar on the green planet or whatever, the main characters walk by a red robot that is coming out of the bar. It looks very much like P-Body in Portal 2, which makes sense. I figured it was because of the playable demo/teaser of Super-8 in Portal 2, Super-8 also being a film directed by J. J. Abrams. So this must have been him returning the favor.

Has the internet seriously not caught on that? It's not so far-fetched.

It is pretty far fetched, the robot doesn't really look like P-Body.

It's not identical, but I still recognized it instantly. I figured its design was a bit unusual for Star Wars robots.
I guess we'll eventually know if it was intended or not.
i mean, jj is a pretty geeky guy and all, but if anything it's more likely that the people creating it stumbled upon portal when looking for robot designs; were influenced by it, unconsciously, from memory; or just designed a similar looking robot by pure coincidence

I honestly think that if Portal 2 has anything to do with it, it's more likely to be intentional than what you say. Like I said, it's not a meaningless reference; it makes sense regarding Super-8.
When I saw it, I thought "wow, that looks P-Body! Probably a coincidence..." Then I remembered about that playable teaser and it all made sense to me.
It's obvious that they wouldn't make it so it's identical to the original, because
this

would stand out way too much anywhere in Star Wars.
I'm going to come with a picture of it in a moment, we'll see more clearly and maybe I'll withdraw what I said.
i mean, jj is a pretty geeky guy and all
if jj abrams is your idea of geeky, then you have no idea what actual geeky is.

Let's not forget that JJ and Gabe Newell said they wanted to make movies and games together, so it's not far fetched at all.

he is a geek though
and that's cool. i remember one of his big things with star trek was getting every single little detail down on all the spacecraft, even if you couldn't see it
so this guy right?

i can see it, i guess. mostly just the general shape. i think it was probably just a coincidence, but i suppose i wouldn't be too surprised if it was said to be loosely inspired by P-body or something
i dont remember that but damn that does look a lot like portal
Re-watched Dredd, about 9/10
My only gripe remains with some of the character relationships. For example, [sp]the nerd IT guy, who was crucial to controlling the entire building's security, yet MaMa keeps threatening him constantly? Makes no sense.[/sp]
And second of all, [sp]there is no second of all, it's a great fucking action, and it cries for continuation.[/sp]

Yes! Thanks for getting that picture.
Now that I see it, there's a definite resemblance, but I can't be sure that it's intentional anymore. It kinda looks like it was merged with Glados' "face", but I don't know. The arms are near identical though, but yeah. Maybe it was nothing, we'll probably know for sure one day.
Been fortunate to of been to the cinema five times in the past few weeks. Going to give an overview of the films as opposed to every single thing on my mind about them.
The Hateful Eight 8.5/10
Came in knowing the polarised reviews of this and I'm quite frankly confused as it didn't feel like three hours at all. The plot thick and heavy and awesome dialogue as I expect from Tarentino.
The Revenant 7.3/10
Great performances, yes, great scenery, yes, however I feel the plot essentially boils down to a varient of the original Mad Max film. It did feel too long however the seats I was sitting in at the cinema I was at were not the best so at some point I'm going to re-watch this for the sake of fairness.
The Big Short 8.3/10
The financial crisis film it's OK to laugh at, some truly diabolical people but some really great performances. I really can't believe the person who directed Anchorman made this.
Creed 8.0/10
Having not seen the Rocky films I went to see this film as a wild card gamble, it paid off and I felt truly behind the characters and works well as a standalone film.
Spotlight 9.0/10
Potential film of the year for me and its only January. The ensemble cast all equally bring something to the table. Despite at its core being an extremely serious matter it does find some time to have an odd unrelated laugh and I find this adds a very much human and real heart to the story and despite being in the cinema screening with possibly less than 20 people we all [sp]gasped audibly at the ending[/sp].
my ratings for revenant/hateful eight would've been switched. i didn't find h8ful that great
Lake Mungo
Pretty decent horror flick. It could be cut down a fair amount, one section in particular could have been completely removed with no impact on the movie, but at its core it told a really spooky (albeit simple) story that never resorted to jump scares. If you like slow burning horrors then give it a shot.

i thought that dredd only benefited from all these dry relationships between the characters

Repo Man - Great scifi comedy. Watch it if you haven't yet.

Five Deadly Venoms
The movie was sick as fuck and a great example of '70s Hong Kong kung fu movies. I liked the fact that there was a bit of a mystery/cop movie to it, but the kung fu was still at the forefront, and the five different styles were cool. I felt that the subtitles were a bit weird and poorly paced, but I think that was Netflix shitting the bed and not the filmmakers.
Ong Bak
There were some bits where the acting could have been better, and I felt a little weird about the not-particularly-subtle nationalism placed in there, but the movie was great because the chase and fight scenes were excellent. The fights were easy to follow because there wasn't any shaky-cam or other shit, and at the same time they were well choreographed and showed a lot of acrobatics and style. The light-hearted moments of the movie didn't feel out of place, especially in the chase scenes when there needed to be something extra to keep my interest.
The Raid 2
I know the thread isn't too fond of the 1st movie, but this one was great, and improved upon the first in pretty much every aspect. There was a better story involved that didn't rely on a weird [sp]villain is the good guy's long lost brother[/sp] twist. The fight scenes were more violent and intense, which really helps the movie because there isn't a lot of acrobatics like in Ong Bak. The camerawork, while shaky, was also pretty good, as it wasn't used to obscure anything. There were definitely moments when the camerawork shined because of how elaborate it was, the most obvious of which would be during the highway chase sequence. Overall, it's better than the first in nearly every way, and I would even say the first is worth skipping if not to just watch this one.

cringe
are there any more?
Pitch Black
The first half has some pacing problems that seem to get worse as time goes on. At least the last half is still awesome.
The Chronicles of Riddick
Man, it's so jarring to watch these two back to back. Pitch Black at least seemed a little grounded, but this is pure fantasy, and it's a little too cheesy for its own good at times. It does have its charm, especially if you want to watch was basically boils down to Conan the Barbarian in space.
Goodnight Mommy
jeepers... that was fucked up...
ineedanadult/10
pitch black is cool but the games are far better than the second film
Kingsman: The Secret Service - 8/10
Really really enjoyed this. The action scenes were god damn insane, and I loved every second of it. That fucking church scene, jesus.
pitch black is cool but the games are far better than the second film
riddick games are dope. very neat aesthetics
Donnie Darko (Director's Cut) - I thought that was absolutely great, but should I eventually watch the theatrical cut? I've heard mixed things about it compared to the director's cut.
