Dirty Harry 9/10 - Clint is the epitome of cool plus the soundtrack is great.
I'm revisiting some old movies at the moment ...

ontopic: Juno. The whole soundtrack sounded like a commercial. I hate the ukulele. Movie wasn't my thing.

'cos it's a reference to the sound effect in the Alien trailer that (as far as I can remember) was also not actually used in that film either
Mad Max: Fury Road- 7/10
No, I'm not kidding. It was good, but I can't say I see all the hype.
your brain must be confused from all the BWUUUUH and "it's okay 9/10" in this thread
It was good, but I can't say I see all the hype.
I thought it was real good, but I also don't get all the "100/10, best movie all years, completely reinvents the action genre" hype.
I thought it was real good, but I also don't get all the "100/10, best movie all years, completely reinvents the action genre" hype.
As far as general movies go I'd say 7-8/10 isn't far wrong, there was some dodgy acting and the plot was pretty barebones. But compared to modern action movies it's a definite 9-10/10, the bare bones plot becomes a plus rather than a negative and the stunts and effects are far better than anything that has come out in a long time.
I get it now.
Any genre you don't like is crap, even if it's quality stuff in that type of genre.
i like the genre. i like zombie stuff. he's just acting like an authority on something that he isn't (and doesn't have one)
[editline]8th September 2015[/editline]
So he can't state in his own book (which you haven't even read) what he thinks a zombie is? He makes absolutely no claims that other definitions are 'wrong', I don't think he ever even mentions 'fast zombies', and I'm pretty sure his description is as about as close to Romero's vision as you could get. How about you do your research before you talk out of your ass like that? He wrote the book a) because it's a fun topic to read/talk about (or was at the time, I agree zombies have become stale and overused recently) and b) he knew he could make money off it (can't blame him for that)
someone who argues about the content of a book they haven't even read = embarrassing human
he can do what he wants in his own books, but he's outspoken on the issue outside and inside of his books on what he does and doesn't think clarifies for a made up creature, that he didn't make up.
that's dumb.

Juno is such a disturbing movie
just think about Michael Cera cumming inside someone
Straight outta Compton
8/10
The scene where they get arrested during a concert isn't good at all, the niggas with attitude are supposed to be beaten by the police with their batons. It was a fantastic movie. Lot's of music played during movie so it's pretty wild when you're smoking and drinking in the movie theatre.
Bull Durham
This is one of those movies that even if you don't care for sports, especially the Lowest A Level of Minor League Baseball, you still have to appreciate as a movie. It's funny, it's witty, has some great characters and set pieces, and at the core of it is this nice message.
Bull Durham is the story of two players, the washed up, veteran minor league catcher "Crash" Davis (Kevin Costner) and the young, uncontrollable yet extremely talented pitcher Calvin "Nuke" Laloosh (Tim Robbins). Davis, who played one week in the Major Leagues years ago, is at the end of his playing career and is sent to mentor and teach Nuke while playing for the Durham Bulls of the A level Carolina League, the second lowest level of professional baseball. Both of them compete for the affections of Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon), a swinging bachelorette obsessed with baseball and the Durham Bulls, who is also helping a younger friend find a good guy.
Throughout the film is the theme that eventually you will get old and past your prime, and if you haven't achieved your dreams by that point you need to give them up so you can help some one else achieve theirs. For a genre that's usually filled with endings where the good guys win and achieve fame and glory and the big trophy, it's a message that is not really handled that often even in non-sports films but this film handles it so well and so great that you can't help but see the ending as happy even though half the cast never got what they wanted.

you kind of had to see it fresh and in cinema, like I saw it in IMAX when it first came out and was just blown away
you kind of had to see it fresh and in cinema, like I saw it in IMAX when it first came out and was just blown away
it was absolutely stunning in 3d.
The problem with arguments like "Oh you had to see it in 3D" and the like for me is that they only really work if we still lived in the kind of world where the only way to view old movies was to go see them at some some sort of second run theater or if they got rereleased. We haven't lived in such a world since the late 70s, and now even second run theaters are a thing of the past in most places. Having to see a movie in 3d to completely enjoy it means that we had to be able to see it in roughly the first 3 to 4 weeks for most places as usually that's when all but the biggest theaters drop the 3D showings, and 3d showings on the home video market is just not possible for most people.
To get back to Mad Max, due to circumstances beyond my control, I only got to see that film on the day that it closed, and of course the only showing was in 2D. I realy loved the film but everytime I saw an effect that was obviously supposed to be in 3D it was jarring.
I think there's no better example than the guitar flying out on the last shot of destruction. That shot of destruction is an amazing shot, but seeing the guitar fly out and take focus dead center kind of distracts the thing. It's like taking a beautiful shot of a sunset over a hill but there's a guy standing in one part of the shot. Oh it's beautiful but seeing that guy distracts you.
And what's worse is that as I mentioned, not having 3D option at home for most people means that until that really becomes a realistic option, anyone seeing this in future generations is going to see that kind of shot and really be taken aback by it.
I never got the chance to see Gravity in 3D at a theater and so when I watched it at home I was really disappointed. The whole thing felt way too "Hollywood" and I can't help but feel it would have been very different in IMAX
seeing it in theaters didn't make much of a difference

As impressive as the visuals are at times, it's so dumb that it's hard to enjoy.

I saw it several times, both in 3D and 2D. That was the only scene I picked out that was clearly meant for 3D when watched in 2D.
That being said, when watching in 3D, it doesn't really improve any. The guitar scene is the only thing that really stands out, beyond that it's just the same movie with an extra pair of glasses on my head to watch. It didn't add or take away from the film.
i know this is a lot of analyzation for about four seconds of a film, but it apparently disgruntled a great many people.
the guitar + steering wheel are a neat effect that i'm sure satisfied the people who enjoy typical hollywood 3D extravaganzas. However--and especially with having seen the making of video with the full unedited shot--i would have enjoyed it more without the extra effect
the transition at the end of the shot, when the center of the steering wheel fills the frame and goes to black before jumping to the next shot, would remain wholly intact because the camera that recorded the crash was placed so perfectly that the cab of the rig comes right up to the lens anyway, and the dirt and dust fills the rest of the screen quite well.
thematically, it would make more sense to see a plain, literally gritty, realistic crash sequence. (Obvious Fury Road spoilers) [sp]The story is coming to a close; the fantasy of riding the Wastes in ridiculous machines questing for glory and the aspiration of Valhalla is being torn down as Joe's reign comes to a violent conclusion. the War Rig and Doof Wagon, two out of the three of the magnum opera of Joe's frenetic imagination, are being totaled, contributing to the downfall of his society. Reality, sensibility, and compassion are about to return to this pocket of the world. Because, in the end, that is the conclusion to this plot: the destitute population is saved from repression and given hope again as the maniacal tyrant is overthrown.
The presence of Doof Man's guitar and the skull emblem steering wheel flying at your face suggests their feverish spirituality will never die. In part, this is correct, because there are still three more Mad Max stories to follow after this plot. But for Fury Road's sake, it would have been more effective to watch the crash unfold completely and, perhaps, let the camera sit still while the dust settles in order to set the tone that the insanity is finally receding.
It's my opinion that George successfully established the atmosphere of his world prior, even just by having the Doof Wagon exist in the first place. no need for anything more crazy, especially when it runs against the change in tone.[/sp]
That's deep, man :mindblown:

There weren't a whole lot of them in Mad Max I'll admit but I was just using that scene from Fury Road as an example of a larger problem affecting movies being shot in 3D today.
I loved the film but it was far from perfect, and the 3D shots weren't even the biggest problem for me.
Besides the whole 3D vs 2D thing, what was it that you didn't like?

Yeah, near the end when she just [sp]decides to persevere and go home anyways because "it'd be a great story to tell" because George Clooney in space comes in a vision to you? That's some real Hollywood bullshit tbh[/sp]
Besides the whole 3D vs 2D thing, what was it that you didn't like?
There were a couple of problems I had, most of them having to do with the protagonists.
For one I just couldn't really get excited for the scenes involving the protagonists on the War Rig. They really came off as bland to me. I would like to think that that's only really a problem because they are acting opposite some of the most amazing and memorable villains ever put on film, but upon further reflection neither of the two leads really do anything of consequence up until the end chase, especially Max. In fact I might go so far as to say that Max could really have been played by anyone considering how little he does in the scheme of things.
I also didn't like how little fleshed out some of the heroic characters were. I hate to sound like a whiny sjw but this is especially a problem for the five wives, who as a group do little more than sit in the back of the truck for the whole movie save for two of them. I think if you are going to devote that much screen time to five people I should at least know their names by the end of the film. In fact to prove my point, I want you to play a little game. Name as many of the cars in this film you can. Now name as many characteristics of the wives you can. See which one you can name more of.
In short if there is any problem I had with this film is that it is an amazing film, but it doesn't feel like it's a Mad Max film. For that matter it doesn't even feel like it's Furiosa's film. This film is made most entertaining by Immortan Joe and crew.
To be fair about the five wives, they're more of a plot device than actual characters in the movie.
It would be a bit more absurd if Joe were chasing after a woman who took his prized scepter or sword or hub cap.

Why? The series ended so neatly in Ultimatum why do they have to keep making them? It's not like that last one was all that great.
