Do you like Terminator 2 more than the first one?
Also, my rating is biased, as I went in knowing pretty much all of the film before watching it.
The [sp]T-800 being the good guy and the new guy being the bad guy fakeout[/sp] was excellent, but it lost its impact since I knew it was going to happen before I even watched the first movie.
I rate according to my enjoyment, and due to no fault of the movie I wasn't able to enjoy it the same way someone in 1991 might have.
everybody does
terminator 2 is a masterpiece
Which cut do you think is better?
I watched the director's cut, and I think those 20 extra minutes caused the very long lull point in which no one was in any danger and the "relentless killing machine that will never stop until you are dead" wasn't anywhere near them.
the director's cut for terminator 2 is the way to go imo. (same with aliens)
the extra time in the director's cut are all spread throughout the movie evenly. it's not just 20 minutes that got dumped into the middle of the film. there're some really good scenes in the director's cut that gets lost in the theatrical version such as the entire bit where john talks sarah out of destroying arnold's chip. also this

i don't think the extra scenes really bring down the movie in any major way.

Oh, I actually liked both of those scenes.
I guess my problem with it is the genre shift.
There is nothing wrong with doing that, and I actually think it's admirable compared to rehashing the first movie.
However, the sequel features the same antagonist as the original, but even stronger.
Now, the original was an action movie, but also a thriller, maybe even borrowing from the slasher movie formula.
That meant the protagonists were always in danger. There was always a killer robot right behind them.
The sequel features a bigger, badder terminator, so I would expect it to be even more relentless.
But the genre shift to a straight up action movie with some comedy simply doesn't lend to that, so he just feels ineffective compared to the weaker first movie terminator.
The stakes don't feel the same, so the action isn't as exciting.

"antagonist as the original, but even stronger."
no it doesn't? the whole thing is that the antagonist is now the good guy and there is a completely new bad guy. he's not just stronger. he's a whole different animal.
The antagonist is still a terminator. He is stronger, ([sp]he beats T-800 in a fight[/sp]) he is craftier, and he has new abilities. But other than like 2 scenes ([sp]"Your foster parents are dead," and in the asylum[/sp]) he felt less threatening than the original to me.
The antagonist is still a terminator.
A terminator in a Terminator series film? My god.
both t1 and t2 are great in their own ways
A terminator in a Terminator series film? My god.
Now go one post back.
The first film, being closer to a horror, made him feel like an almost invincible entity.
The second film, being more of an action film, was more about the spectacle and less about the relentlessness.
These two films have the same bad guy. In the second film, the bad guy is even stronger. But because of the tone and genre shift, he doesn't feel as dangerous.
I've already seen how scary a terminator is in the first film. A stronger one shouldn't feel weaker.
both t1 and t2 are great in their own ways
I should probably restate that I enjoyed Terminator 2, but because it and 1 are very different films, one resonated with me more than the other.
ya'll sound like you're deliberately missing his point
i may disagree but i understand your sentiment NotAName. Many people prefer Alien to Aliens--a series which, IMO, pretty well parallels the trends of the Terminator series
T2 is more memorable for the comedic moments, iconic imagery, and hella dramatic set pieces. Terminator is remembered more for setting up the world, maintaining atmosphere and horror, and establishing its particular brand of sci-fi.
it boils down to the kind of plot you prefer more. personally, while i thought Terminator was pretty well done, it wasn't as well done next to T2 as Alien was next to Aliens, leading me to prefer T2 for its differently-flavored merits.
Obviously Genisys is the best Terminator film
[sp]I'M KIDDING[/sp]
I don't think you really get it either, NotAName. One of the reasons why T2 is so well regarded by many is because of how ambitious it was on multiple levels. For one thing you've got the genre shift from horror to action, then you've got what at the time were amazing special effects and finally you've got where it gets the most ambitious in that it's actually a pretty intelligent movie with an intelligent message, especially for an action film. To me watching T2 is kind of like being in class and suddenly watching the jock in class deliver this wonderful presentation on Greek Philosophy.
The reason why I love it so much, and I think why a lot of others as well, is that it kind of turns into a piece on human nature and against fatalism, and the reason why it worked where as something why Tomorrowland didn't is that not only does it handle it more intelligently but also this message leaked in subtly throughout the whole film so when the film sits down and starts talking it actually makes sense whereas in Tomorrowland it comes off as ranting, preachy, and sanctimonious.
I'm pretty sure the majority of people like Terminator 2 more than the first one.
I like The Terminator just slightly better, but I do have a predilection for 80s b-movies. I just love the relentless feeling of it and how gritty and tense the movie is.
Terminator 2 is similarly excellent but it does kind of have a lull in the middle. The first movie builds up the Terminator as an enemy that "absolutely will not stop, ever - until you are dead", and indeed Kyle and Sarah remain at best one step away from getting caught the entire movie. By comparison in T2 they just go to Mexico and the T-1000 seems content with letting them get away for that time. When the T-1000 is onscreen and after them it is still incredibly competent and ruthless (the smaller-framed Patrick makes for a great contrast with Schwarzenegger) but I dunno, I guess I admire the purity of The Terminator (to paraphrase another cinematic robot).

Yeah, the chip and the smile scenes are great. The Kyle dream sequence is a little weak but it's great to see Biehn again in any case.
IMO Aliens extended is also great but I don't like the scene where we see the bustling outpost - the tension works better if we don't know what to expect when the marines arrive - seeing [sp]colonists get facehugged[/sp] spoils that.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
I kind of hated it. The way it was shot, the dialogue, the main character were all really irritating me throughout the whole thing. I think that's mostly down to me though rather than the movie.

i dunno, i never thought the early outpost scenes ruined the tension in the later scenes. imo the way those scenes are constructed where the marine first arrive at the outpost are more centered around the destruction of the outpost and not knowing what's behind the corner. not so much about "are the xenomorphs responsible"[sp]since the acid blood damage that the marines quickly find pretty much confirms it anyway. seeing newt's parents getting facehugged only tells the audience that xenomorphs are involved.[/sp]it doesn't really tell you anything much beyond that.
also[sp]plus i thought it was neat to see a little bit of the outpost and the people there before it went to shit. imo it humanises the victims a little more and it's some pretty neat world building.[/sp]
The Departed - 9/10
I saw this again for the first time in a while (wanna say third?) it and was even better than I remembered it being. So much stuff I caught I hadn't seen before.. it does an amazing job of getting you emotionally invested in side characters like Dignam and the Captain who have barely any background save for what you can pick out. By the end there's so much momentum built up its length turns out to be sooo perfect.
It's an unpopular opinion here but I really think it's that good.
[editline]d[/editline]
maybe i just have boner for marky mark cos hes so fucking good in this movie
The Departed is a really fun movie. Not my favorite Scorsese, not by a long shot, but it's still really good.
I'm dying to see Inside Out but my friends insist on going to watch Fantastic Four (since it was recently released in Italy) on the account that it's horrible
Just go see Inside Out it's really worth it
Mississippi Grind
8.5/10
Great soundtrack too.Go watch that.
Went to see maze runner 2 with my sister (I haven't watched the first one). It was watchable, I didn't love or hate it. 6/10
Watched Insidious Chapter 3, it wasn't bad but it wasn't the best. About as mediocre as the rest of them, watchable and enjoyable at some parts with a few jump scares that got me good. Not complete shit 7/10

Urgh, I think I can't stand one more of these teen/tween/young adult aimed "young dude/girl against the system" movies which all have some overphotoshoped cover art and actors playing roles of characters 10 years younger.
I mean ffs

Am I the only one noticing a trend?
Are all of these done by the same guy in photoshop?
Why is another earth in there?
Probably shouldn't. Whatevs.

Also lmao, the Maze Runner wallpaper is hosted on img2.wikia under a subfolder called thehungergames
Super (2010): 9/10
Can't think of any real criticisms. Rainn Wilson decides to become a "super"hero and fight crime.
It's meant to be comedic, and it is, at the same time as becoming continually more fucked up - there's a great contrast between the general goofiness of it, and pretty authentic and horrifying violence. I don't know what more to say about it, it's a very well-executed film with a pretty original premise*, and you should watch it
*Yeah, I know, Kick-Ass did the same thing, but the guy basically is a super-hero by the end
Out of those "superhero but not a superhero" films, I'd say I prefer Defendor over Super or Kick-Ass.

It's sad because The Giver is a really intelligent and well-written book
and without it this whole "YA dystopian" genre probably wouldn't exist
Tomorrowland
7/10
Quite cool for some parts
