Captive Got dragged to this and I want to rail on it a bit so I don't feel like I wasted my time entirely. -Most importantly, is really just an advertisement for a self-help book. It's supposed to be based on a true story, and the book really was involved in what happened, I guess, but at that point you just shouldn't be making a movie about this sort of thing unless you're prepared to minimize the book's involvement in the plot. -Soundtrack is awful. Never before have I seen a movie so completely and utterly ruined by its own music. I'm sure there's worse out there, but during many scenes that are supposed to be tense and exciting [sp](three in particular I remember are one in the beginning where a convict escapes from jail and shoots and kills THREE people, one where the protagonist is dragged along by said convict who is holding her captive to go hide a truck in the woods, and finally during the climax where the convict is surrounded by the police and has to make a decision on whether or not it's time to turn himself in)[/sp] they play this lighthearted, plucky guitar music that would be much more appropriate in a scene where, say, somebody is late for work and is rushing to grab their things and get out the door. Dissolves most of the tension in the movie where added tension would have made watching the movie a much more fulfilling experience. -Nauseating cinematography in the beginning where a lot of the shots are just awkward close-ups of somebody's face while they're in motion. Gets a bit better about it later on. -Has a subplot about the protagonist's drug addiction and how it's affecting her daughter, who she no longer has custody of. Isn't given enough attention and never truly gets resolved. -Contained a few moments that were quite baffling... One where the protagonist has an unusually difficult time reciting the alphabet because she's supposedly stressed out trying to open a window to escape, but that wasn't really convincing enough and it really just seemed more like she just really didn't know the order of the alphabet. There's another scene where a police lieutenant is so stressed about his inability to find the guy he's looking for that he topples a vending machine-sized coffee dispenser when it doesn't appear to work. That just ended up being unintentionally funny. There's more but I don't really want to comment on the things that probably actually occurred in real life. The whole story that's being told just feels kind of unrealistic in general, but I guess this shit really did happen... -Is very much a Christian movie. I'm not religious, but I don't have a problem with religious messages. Obviously this movie just wasn't for me in that regard. I know there are people out there that can appreciate religious movies, and that's fine. What bugged me is that some of the passages that are read from the self-help book are somewhat disturbing in that they seemed to promote a level of piousness that involves abandoning your own self-worth in the name of God. Don't know if I should really be commenting on the religious themes of this but that doesn't seem like a very good mindset to be teaching people. Might be misunderstanding it a bit, however, because I kind of zoned out a bit during the scenes where the passages get read and I'm mostly going off of what my brother told me about it afterwards. -The credits contained footage from a previously aired Oprah interview with the real life counterpart of the protagonist and the author of the self-help book. I found that very odd and kind of felt like I was being advertised to one last time. I don't like that. There's probably more I could pick on if I thought about it more. Overall, a pretty bad movie, but not enough to land itself in the "so bad it's good" zone. In the end it just felt like a really long and mediocre episode of some TV crime drama.
Film school is for nerds.
"I didn't go to film school, I went to films." - Quentin Tarantino
Terminator Genisysjsys 5/10 not offensively bad, it's just incredibly mediocre under every aspect. I still liked arnold as the terminator. At least it's better than Salvation. the way I see the series: T1 > T2 > T3 > T:G > T:S
tbh expectations for termination genocyde should be v low anyway. I felt ill after Salvation and there is no reason to think this is some kind of new genesis for the franchise.
I was a little interested in the BTTF2-esque aspects of Tyrmynytr: Gynysys, but apparently they quickly abandon 1984 for 2017 (because the terminator can build a time machine??) so w/e
Green Zone (Paul Greengrass, 2010) 9/10 Fantastic modern thriller with war and politics as realistic background (or at least, that's what it feels like). The scenery and photography is much better than you'd expect from an American film centered on Irak, the country appears beautiful. And fortunately, it's a bit less one-sided as I've gotten used to with these films. The ending is great, very tense and climatic. The soundtrack is okay. Darkman (Sam Raimi, 1990) 8.5/10 If you liked Tim Burton's Batman films, you have to see this one. The atmosphere and universe is pretty much the same, especially with Danny Elfman's soundtrack. Even more interesting to note that this film's villain is some sort of evil Bruce Wayne. It's a shame they didn't do any decent, serious sequel to this great super-hero film.
They Live - 8/10
any movie about a young nervous guy/kid who is giving it all to accomplish what he needs/wants?
spongebob the movie
spongebob the movie
and real action?
Terminator Genisys - 9/10 damn son, blew my expectations out of the water i'd say it's almost on-par with t2 (with the exception for some really weird inconsistencies), but that's probably a controversial opinion :v: seeing almost-identical characters was kinda weird though, but it worked out really well, [sp]really felt for arnold near the end, like in t2[/sp]
and real action?
spongebob 2
Jagten 8/10 Damn this movie portrayed a modern day witch hunt well. It's pretty scary how fast it escalated.
any movie about a young nervous guy/kid who is giving it all to accomplish what he needs/wants?
Pee-Wee Herman's Big Adventure
any movie about a young nervous guy/kid who is giving it all to accomplish what he needs/wants?
Alien: A film about a friendly young being having fun and pulling pranks all in the setting of outer-space!
Braveheart 1/5 The villain(s) aka England borderline story book. The love sidestory with the princess, boring and pointless. Battles underwhelming (also in some scenes not a single Scot is killed on screen). To be honest Mel Gibson just looks out of place in general compared to just about every other Scot in the film.
To be honest, I said before I thought Terminator Genisys was decent sequel. I'm still sticking with that. If my expections have gone lower, i'd say my rating would go from a 8 to a 7.5 A movie I recently watched was the Thing, man what a great horror movie. I advise who likes claustrophic horror go see, in fact everyone go watch it
youre basically preaching to the john carpenter fanclub here
ooh ooh have we talked about the babadook??
A movie I recently watched was the Thing, man what a great horror movie. I advise who likes claustrophic horror go see, in fact everyone go watch it
Good, now watch Halloween. [sp]The better film.[/sp]
i bought they live and assault on precinct 13 today on bluray just because john carpenter movies are very collectible
Trainspotting 4/5 Good movie, solid all around, and[sp]the heroin withdrawal scene was fucking insane.[/sp]
Children of Men - Absolutely great. Honestly I was expecting a generic scifi thriller for some reason and was surprised by the heavy amount of imagery and parallels (even if at times were were a tiny bit too obvious).
i bought they live and assault on precinct 13 today on bluray just because john carpenter movies are very collectible
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't own any on bluray yet. I really want the better Halloween release.
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't own any on bluray yet. I really want the better Halloween release.
the super 15 disc thing they released? it costs like $150 but is absolutely worth it, with alternate cuts of halloween 6 and for shits n gigs even includes the rob zombie flicks.
So I found this neat series on Netflix about the history of film, it's pretty interesting; thought you guys might find it interesting as well. It's called The Story of Film: An Odyssey.
Definitely give this a look. I watched a bit of it a while ago, and I learned so much about film history from 1890 to 1910 that I had no idea about before just in the first episode.

This is the one I meant, the 35th anniversary release of the original. Has a way better transfer than the original bluray release. that is dope
Trainspotting 4/5 Good movie, solid all around, and[sp]the heroin withdrawal scene was fucking insane.[/sp]
Just watched it too, 7/10. I think it should have been a little longer though, because even though I haven't read the book, I feel like it glossed over a lot of stuff. Diane was made out to be one of the central characters of the movie, yet she had like two scenes and was entirely inconsequential afaik
