Okay, since you guys are apparently John Carpenter's fanclub, I want to know which films of his I haven't seen I need to watch.
I've already seen:
- The Fog
- Escape from New York
- The Thing
- Christine
- Starman (it's just a female fantasm film in my opinion)
- Prince of Darkness
- They Live
- Escape from L.A.
What else do I need to see ASAP?

Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13. Big Trouble in Little China too if you don't mind a some glorious 80's B-movie cheese.
Just watched it too, 7/10. I think it should have been a little longer though, because even though I haven't read the book, I feel like it glossed over a lot of stuff. Diane was made out to be one of the central characters of the movie, yet she had like two scenes and was entirely inconsequential afaik
My problem with Trainspotting is that, like most of Danny Boyle's films, it shifts focus completely half way through just when you're getting engrossed.
I just finished watching Kill List.
It's one of those horror movies that use both creepiness and generally uncomfortable (though not scary) scenes to a pretty good effect. The soundtrack in particular I liked, it really added to the weird creepiness of the movie. I want to check out Ben Wheatley's other movies now.
Overal, it's a thoroughly spooked/10.
Virunga - 10/10.
Very sad movie/documentary and extremely tense at times. If you haven't watched it yet it's on netflix.
The Truman Show: 10/10
If I had to use one word do describe the film it would be powerful. Almost cried at the ending, really good stuff.

Big Trouble in Little China, the finest movie ever made
[editline]27th September 2015[/editline]
also holy crap apparently I've only seen four Carpenter movies!? I need to get on that.
how can you guys be forgetting this masterpiece?

also notable mentions include ghosts of mars and village of the damned. one is bad and the other i haven't seen yet but it has superman in it.
also also, did anyone here see the ward?
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room 8.5/10
Saw this film was directed by Alex Gibney and had it on my hitlist for quite a while, a real fantastic look at Enron as a whole especially as I missed it the first time around. The editing is masterful in how it's used to create a narrative between the companies conception and the time of it's fall. I loved how they included everyone from the high ups to the general workforce.
The choice of ending song is probably one of the best I've ever seen, I thought it was made specially for it at first as it matched it perfectly.
21 Grams
It was okay. It started off a little obnoxious, the whole disjointed nonlinear narrative, but about half an hour in it became really interesting and I got quite into it. Then it completely lost all momentum and became extremely dull and predictable for the last forty minutes. It had a lot of potential but it fizzled out. Also it looked like shit.
Sicario - 9/10
Been a long time since I've watched a movie that tense. Great performances all around.

what i think is effective about kill list is that in most horrors, it's dumb teenagers that are easily scared... being scared. but with kill list, you've got these two hardened hitmen shitting themselves. and not in a cheesy crying and spluttering way, in a way where they're able to fall back onto their training and basic instincts. but it's so well acted they have their deeper terror shine through it. it's not something you see often when big macho men are in horrors and it's so well done.
[editline]28th September 2015[/editline]
and if these two highly trained dudes are scared, it rubs off a lot more on you than if it were a teary teenager.
Tomorrowland 5.5/10
has all the disney production quality going for it, but damn for some reason it just loses its magic as you're watching. There are some cool scenes (best one being the fight at clooney's house. awesome), but its mostly just exposure and build up with no real pay-off, and a wasted third act that misses any sort of sense of a "grand finale". It's a real shame because they nailed many aspects of what they were going for, but unfortunately some of the writers fucked up and it just failed as a movie.
Joy Ride 3/10
what a load of horse shit. The most pathetic, uninspired, precitable, lazily tossed together piece of junk I've seen in quite a while. I shouldn't listen to friends when it comes to movie suggestions, I always end up wasting an evening infront of a pile of shit covered with a thin layer of sugar.

I thought that while the movie as a whole was spooky, it wasn't scary, right up until it was time to fucking get up in the middle of the night to take a piss and the fucking [sp]spooky-ass druid cultists and the fucking hunchback[/sp] kept popping into my mind.
The Hustler
4/5
I liked it well enough. If you like Paul Newman or movies about con men or pool, you'll dig it.
So I just learned that Terrence Malick was born in the town a bit north of my hometown. That's cool I guess.
sicario
i'm basically gonna say what everyone else is saying. it's fantastic. very very good. denis is a modern master of tension and he had me gripped the whole movie without making me feel bored or exhausted. also when the "action scenes" came in, it didn't feel like the just got movie dumbed down for them. everyone's excellent in this, especially blunt and benicio del toro. wonderfully shot too and the music's really well suited, etc... all the great things you should expect from denis villeneuve. go see it.
edit: also roger deakins is just as good as ever of course. he fits perfectly with villeneuve.
So.
Is the Mexican Gang war the new "In" thing of Hollywood?
In the late 90's/early 2000s it was black gang wars/crime in US cities(Training Day;Snatch and others come to mind), later it was organized crime in US cities(Departed, The Town, Mystic River and friends), now thanks to Breaking Bad we are at Mexican Gang wars.
Just a theory. True? Partly true?

idk how long its been going on but i'm sick of it
it's one of the reasons why i love Chef, it was so refreshing to finally see a film that puts latin american culture in a positive light (it was mostly just cuban culture but still)
wtf friends wasn't about organized crime
"could I BE any more screwed" says chandler as the heroin deal goes south and he's forced to shoot his way out of the warehouse

What the hell is Snatch doing in there? It wasn't about black gang wars nor was it set in the US.

Safety Not Guaranteed
nice little movie with interesting characters. I liked it.
Just got done with The Martian audiobook and now got my tickets booked for this Friday!
Oculus
6/10
The movie starts really slow. The movie becomes interesting in the third act, when the past and present timeline starts to crossover.
The movie was.. ok. I did't hate it but didn't really enjoy it. Best horror this year still is It Follows.
I don't really understand how people liked Oculus, I found it to be a load of arse tbh
