Saw The Martian last night. It was alright. It seems like Ridley Scott read the book and only put the scenes in he liked. So many weird decisions in this too, like a lot of stuff was made different for no reason. This could of been way better if a better director got to it.
God Bless America 2/10
fucking terrible movie, a complete waste of time. It has like...no content at all. While watching it I was just asking myself "why" constantly. It was trying to give a message about consumerism and america being dumb, but it doesn't work because the country represented in the movie is basically a caricature. And anyway it's hard to find any justification to the actions of the protagonist, he just comes across as a total psycopath.
And I didn't expect it to be boring as shit, the trailer makes it seem like a fun action ride, but there are like 3 shootouts in the whole thing and the rest is just nothingness and boredom.
Pretty much on the same tier as Idiocracy
Pretty much on the same tier as Idiocracy
i liked Idiocracy though
haven't watched inside out yet buuuut wait a minute what are you talking about
emotions are chemicals, if they're present they bias your actions respectfully so it's your emotions that drive you to do certain things
They make you more prone but the one doing something is you.
I just don't like this way of thinking that emotions are somehow disconnected to ones mind.
There's a nice House M.D. episode about a prisoner who has to much adrenalin that explains it better.

Except Idiocracy is so over the top hamfisted it parodies hamfisted satire too.
Scorpio Rising - The film was a pretty nice art film from the 60s. I really loved how it showed how the bikers' developed from a childlike fascination with bikes and rebel icons into a Nazi-fetishistic sort of religious focus on the culture. Some great imagery in the film. It is a rather short film so if you have about thirty minutes to spare I say it is worth the watch. Film is also pretty historically significant due to it going to the California Supreme Court due to charges of obscenity.
Naked Lunch
Not sure how to rate this cause the film clearly wasn't for me. I managed to follow the narrative (I think) but if there's a point to this movie I didn't get it.
Just finished The Martian
At the start, I thought it was kinda rushed, but after awhile, it mellowed out and the pace then felt alright. The humour isn't too bad.
Though, the secondary characters could use more screen time/background.
And, it could use more stunning space views (like Interstellar)
8/10, enjoyable movie, would had been better if they had touched on the other characters more
Another film recommended by Facepunch...
The Truman Show (Peter Weir, 1998)
9/10
The fact that I wasn't bored for a second almost made me give it a 10/10... But unfortunately, when you look back on it, there are a lot of little things that don't make sense or little of it. And the soundtrack was a bit weird. Other than that, it's a brilliant film about television, cinema, subjective reality and fate.
If you want to check out something else by Peter Weir I'd strongly recommend Picnic at Hanging Rock
The Truman Show is also excellent, though. I really liked the little "product placement" bits
12 years a slave. Really good movie and the fact that it's based on what is believed to be a true story just makes it better. 9/10

It is a true story.
Pretty interesting autobiography, as well. A definite read.
It is a true story.

I didn't know it was based on something told by Solomon himself, I have to read it now. Thx Scorpious.
The Martian
Agreeing with Rusty here, really just a bit of a mess
The whole film hinges on the question 'will Matt Damon get home?' and the constant dangers he faces - but [sp]almost every problem that arises is solved within the next 5/10 minutes, [/sp] meaning there is NEVER really any sense that Matt Damon is in danger. My friend and I both thought that during the initial evac from Mars, [sp]the guy who got hit and knocked away wasn't Matt Damon, and that he would go back to help and get stuck... but it was him! So that was somewhat poorly conveyed... but more importantly: Nobody in the film dies. Not one character. Nobody is ever in real mortal danger,[/sp] meaning the whole premise of the film sort of falls flat.
You could argue that the film is more about the process of survival and getting him home than the question of will-he-make-it, but the problems here are that [sp] as already mentioned, every problem that arises is solved almost immediately[/sp], and that the actual nitty-gritty of how is step is achieved is never shown. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see every little step of each scientific process, but there were a lot of times Matt Damon/the team at NASA said they had to 'science the shit out of this' and then bam, it's done. [sp]And that's an actual line in the film.[/sp] There were a few moments of 'here's some science for you nerds' but generally it felt like the actual scientific basis was dumbed down or ignored for a general audience.
Also, as Rusty said, the music. Ahhh man. The insertion of the 80s era disco tracks seems to be to be an appeal to nostalgia for older audience members, in perhaps the same way that type of music was used in Guardians of the Galaxy - but to me it came off as the act of a gang of producers desperate to cash in on that nostalgia, using it not for any real emotional value but simply a cynical band-wagoning of other modern films. I'm not explaining this very well, but I basically thought the music wasn't used in a genuinely 'this track is great for this movie' way, but in a 'people like the 80s, other films used 80s music and made millions ...we want millions so USE IT!' way.
The movie also dragged for me, there are so many problems to overcome that the film seemed to last forever and everything still felt rushed, and yeah as Rusty said, the ending was cheesy and typical and a by-the-book Hollywood happy ending.
Furthermore, I found Matt Damon's character actually kind of a douche - I would have had some sympathy for his few outbursts if it weren't for the fact that he made jokes about everything every 5 minutes; was the character terrified for his life or loving every minute of it? Apparently both. There wasn't consistency of emotion, no constant fear - again coming back to the lack of an over-riding sense of danger. [sp] e.g. the food - his potato plants get wiped out and I thought 'he's done for, what will he come up with???' And then 2 minutes later we hear NASA saying he grew enough potatoes for another 200 days or so, problem over what's next?[/sp]
I went in not having read the book, thinking the film would be quite bleak and gritty, with Matt Damon barely hanging on and verging on cabin-fever, isolated on a planet millions of miles from home... but there was none of that. He seemed to be having a great time, fixing every problem that was thrown at him and joking all the way home.
Just saw Jurassic World
6/10
It was more entertaining than I thought, but it obviously never stood a chance of holding up a candle to the original. Its a straight popcorn flick with the exposition kept to a minimum, while still touching on the themes of the first like corporations treating life like a spreadsheet and the hubris of cutting edge scientists.
Thought they used way too much CGI though, and the annoying thing about CGI, is it really hasn't come that far. Its gotten much cheaper to do which is why its in everything, but in terms of gapping the uncanny valley - Spielberg hid it better with smart film making. I think the only animatronic shots in the whole movie where the velociraptors.
Also too much winking at the audience.
Los Angeles Plays Itself
9/10
Really solid documentary about Los Angeles' portrayal in film, and the narrator is real sharp. It is long and it definitely drags some, which isn't helped by the narration also being very dry. I recommend it.
The martian
It was an OK movie, but as said before the book is way better. He solves the problems way too fast in comparison to the book. They also removed one big problem Mark got, which disappointed me cause that's the reason I like the story. I want to see an astronaut solve problems under impossibly bad circumstances. Them censoring swearwords was kinda lame aswell, hard to take it serious.
If you can, read/listen to the book before watching the movie. Because if there's one thing they did right it was the visuals and design. They were all pretty much exactly as I imagined them from the book (except that Kapoor was Indian and not American).

Idiocracy is good but people take it too seriously
Idiocracy is good but people take it too seriously
Perhaps I'm jaded because I dealt with quite a few "society is brainwashed, I know everything, jews did 9/11" types in my time
Idiocracy is good but people take it too seriously
It's painful to hear people take the theory of dumb people breeding more than smart people and thus overpopulating the world with idiots as a legitimate, real concept.
The Martian
They left out a big portion of the book and made changes that didn't make any sense.
5.0/10
[sp]What, he got the MAV instructions before he got to it?[/sp]
[sp]What, he fixed Pathfinder?[/sp]
[sp]What, why is Lewis saving Watney and not Beck?[/sp]
[sp]What, why did he poke a hole in his glove?[/sp]

that movie is just self inserted tirade one after another. it was so fucking preachy and just morally gross. not to mention it didn't make a lick of sense.
makes me worried about bobcat
Exporting Raymond
9/10
Absolutely hilarious and frustrating at the same time, really puts it into perspective how different cultures can be at times.
Dogtooth
Can someone explain this to me
gonna watch bourne identity and supremacy on netlifx tomrrow or some day. so excite
also i watched trainspotting and it was rally good. im surprised at how [sp]optimistic[/sp] the ending was
Rewatched Magnolia for the third time. I was hesitant to say so the past two times, but this is definitely a 10/10 masterpiece, and I don't give that rating lightly
Easily my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film, even more than There Will Be Blood
Dogtooth

Dogtooth had a neat premise, but I never really cared about any of the characters so the "shocking" scenes never really affected me because of it
Just got back from watching Sicario, and I've gotta say that's way up there as a favorite of mine. Properly tense movie that had me on the edge of my seat for the duration of the film and consistently tuned in, not bored for a second. Have to thank Rusty for mentioning it in the thread since I'd originally not considered seeing it.
Possible spoilers here, but [sp]Am I the only one that felt it ended slightly abruptly? Not too much, but the main thing that left me thinking was if Emily's character did end up blowing the whistle after Brolin's had claimed that would be a mistake. That and how Benicio's said "Never point a gun at me again" which she proceeded to then do at the end. Is she fucked?[/sp]
But yeah, 10/10 film for me, Villeneuve can do no wrong.
Oh and how [sp]Benicio's character said to stay off balconies for a while. Whose hunting her? Brolin's team or the mexicans?[/sp]
Just watched Hidden: 10/10
I thought it was pretty good. It kept me curious, focused and on the edge of my seat. Really didn't expect the ending.
10/10 it's pretty good
really?
You didn't hear? The rating scale now goes to 15/10 so people have to compensate.
somewhat late but i think trollhunter is enormously overrated
people are always giving it 8/10 and above but i watched it and laughed at how ridiculously cheesy it was
