Incendies: 8/10
Super good. I'm just confused why [sp]Nawal wanted the twins to learn about their incestuous origins. Unless she was thinking that she'd really be able to go for an Oedipus way of thinking, like that they'd have a learning experience and come to terms with their past or something. But no, basically she just ruined their lives just so Nawal's son/rapist could discover what he had done. Obviously Nawal's story is tragic, but I'd consider her the antagonist.[/sp]
semi relevant but i don't see why anyone thinks interstellar is a bad movie
sure its fine if you dont enjoy it but i dont see how its bad in any shape or form
the visuals, soundtrack, acting, and scientific accuracy are all good as fuck
it's a nolan film
which means it's pretentious as fuck
nobody is debating that the visuals, soundtrack (except me), acting and scientific accuracy (despite being entirely based on theories) are good as fuck
the thing with nolan flicks is the more you watch it, the more shit you notice.

What do you mean by this?
elaborate
-McConaughey gave a pretty weak performance compared to other films he has been in
-Cinematography is pretty risk free and makes it feel like just another generic blockbuster
-None of the characters were really memorable at all except the robot dude
-Terrible balance of voices and background audio
-[sp]If future humans are so advanced that they can create elaborate wormholes and shit and make other dimensions feasible to people and stuff, why didn't they just fix the problem themselves?[/sp]
-[sp]Scene where he uses love to contact his daughter across time and space was really bad[/sp]
It wasn't a bad film though. It was visually nice and I enjoyed watching it, but I would not call it a great film.
What do you mean by this?
the technology of the film (space ship, robot, space habitat at the end)
the wormhole
all based on concepts
-Terrible balance of voices and background audio
IIRC this was done on purpose
the technology of the film (space ship, robot, space habitat at the end)
the wormhole

The black hole, time dilation, and rotating space stations (that is how you get artificial gravity) were based on solid physics. The wormhole is valid in the framework of GR but almost certainly not possible irl. The inside of the black hole and "solving the gravity equation" were pure artistic license.
the only thing wrong with interstellar is the ending
the 'love conquers all' and 5th dimension or whatever the fuck it was
all insanely dumb. the movie was wrapped up with magic. it's lazy and it's fucking stupid and not at all a logical conclusion.
and thats a fairly valid complaint, it makes sense when hatheway says it because shes supposed to be acting all crazy and irrational
the ending does get convoluted but i still don't see how you can look at a scene like the docking scene and be like hey this movie is shit
It's a well directed movie, and I wouldn't go as far to say it's complete shit, but in all honesty the characters and plot didn't hold my interest for very long, and that's what killed it.
it had a neat idea, but to me the execution was pretty ehhh.
IIRC this was done on purpose
doesn't make it any less of a shit choice
The Martian 4/10
I wish the script didn't sound like it was written by a tumblr science enthusiast teen. It feels awkward that you're supposed to believe these people work for NASA when they talk and act like teenagers all the time. The writing ruins this movie for me, I cannot take it seriously because it's so ridiculous.
Huge lost potential, and disappointment.
The Suicide Theory
What an odd pair, a hitman and an immortal person, talking about fate. For some reason, I feel as if I should have realized the twist in the last couple minutes of the film. It's not suspenseful but it keeps your interest going (especially with [sp]how Chris was murdered[/sp])
7/10, pretty decent film to pass the time with and spend the rest of the day contemplating fate vs. free will
Unbreakable
Pleasant surprise. I wonder why I don't hear about this movie more often. I watched it because Tarantino mentioned it as one of his favourite movies. It's directed by Shamadingdong and stars Bruce Willis when they were still good or gave a damn. Interesting take on the whole superhero genre.
Just watched Bowling for Columbine in light of what happened in Oregon.
I've always liked Michael Moore and I go back to this movie every few years and it only gets better every time I see it. Really makes you think. 8.5/10
from a film standpoint it is great, but moore really shows he has little integrity if you look at some of the bullshit he pulled and put in the film out of context.
unbreakable is better than sixth sense imo and sixth sense is good as hell
Tremors 5: Bloodlines - 6/10
If I hadn't been following the series since I was in preschool I wouldn't give a shit about this movie, but as far as straight to DVD b monster movies go it was fine. Had good production value, the CGI was pretty decent considering the budget, and Jamie Kennedy wasn't too terribly annoying, which is impressive.
Really only worth a watch if you're a big fan of the series.

Contrary to popular belief, most scientists and astronauts aren't robots.

Was it better or worse than 3 or 4?
I would say better, though its not hard to be better than Tremors 3. I didn't mind 4 too much, it was at least having fun with its concept.
[editline]6th October 2015[/editline]
Actually in a weird way it reminded me of the Tremors Tv Series.
The Martian: 8/10
It was good
Sicario 8.4/10
Absolutely gripping, within about 5 minutes or so it had me drawn in for the ride. Doesn't feel particularly groundbreaking but still managed to feel an extremely well made film, with the final act in particular just pulling out all the stops to make it one of the most memorable I've seen in a long time. I don't know about anyone else but this film just seemed to cause a massive argument within my family circle about the whole drug trade in Mexico and what should be done to combat it. I'd also like to give a special thumbs up to the soundtrack, which in it's stride was incredible to listen to.
Feeling really happy that in the space of two days I've now seen some of the best films of the year with this and The Martian, not Fury Road levels of great but that is always a hard act to follow.
The Hitcher (1986) - 7.5/10
Highly recommended. Pacing is a bit off at some points and the acting of side characters could be a little bit better, but the movie is beautifully shot and it's gripping as all get-out.
Mystery At the Wax Museum (1933)
It wasn't bad. All around classic horror movie, though I don't know if it was just the change of the times since when it was made to now, but a lot of the dialogue just felt off.
6/10
House of Wax (1953)
Remake of the previous, but with the godfather of horror Vincent Price. He really pulls the movie along and despite be made 20 years after the original, it's set about 20 years prior to when the first took place in the late 1800s, which I think added to it a bit. Biggest contrast I could see in this film compared to the 1933 one was the role of women in the movie. The 1933 one had the main protagonist a hard, independent minded woman with her own job and career where as this remake women were only portrayed as dumb, poor and gold-digging.
8/10, still, because Vincent Price is awesome
I liked the 1950s House of Wax, but I couldn't even finish the original. I just cannot watch movies before the 40s for the most part, aside from maybe Metropolis.
I only really watched the original because I bought House of Wax on DVD and it happen to come with the original with it.
Didn't even realize it until I popped the thing in.
For me, movies from 1900 to like 1935 are generally pretty watchable, but nearly anything from a Hollywood studio between 1936 and 1960 is just no good for me. Yes, even stuff like Casablanca and Gone With The Wind. I just don't like it, and I don't know why.
I don't think there's a period of live action film I don't enjoy watching, but for cartoons - fuck anything between the 20's and 60's for me. I can't stand how most of it looks and feels. not mainly feature cartoons (though some I really do hate), but shit like Betty Boop and what not. The animation style is just like, I don't know what it is about it but it disturbs me.
Ivan's Childhood - Got to see it at a local theater and absolutely loved it. Third Tarkovsky film I've seen after Solaris and Stalker.
Yeah, I like some early stuff (Fleischer Superman) and I admire the creativity of the animation and visuals but overall it's off-putting. I think part of it is that a lot of it was rotoscoped and that adds to the uncanny feeling, and there's something about how they sound (audio quality? voice acting? score? I can't pinpoint it) that feels wrong. Plus the subject matter often gets pretty weird or trippy.
Older claymation gives me the same feeling. I like stuff like Wallace & Gromit, but older stop-motion like Gumby I just find really unsettling.
