i watched the evangelion rebuild movies 1 and 2. i didn't really care for it. i don't really like the subject matter, it's a bit dull. there's just not that much to them? they're a bit too bizarre and not really that compelling.
it's no berserk.

it's also worth noting i only watched the first episode of the original series. but i got the exact same feeling from that as i did from two whole movies. just not into big robots. even though people say 'it's about much more than the big robots' - it's not really.

how can you even say this if you haven't seen the show?
how can you even say this if you haven't seen the show?
because i watched the first two films? they're the same story aren't they. even if the show has more scenes, it's still ultimately about shinji piloting a big angel mech. that's what's on the screen most of the time and that's what the plot revolves around. and it's just not that interesting to me.
[editline]13th November 2015[/editline]
i think you misunderstood, i didn't mean people say that about the show over the films. people say that about evangelion in general.
[editline]13th November 2015[/editline]
and from all that i've seen, i can't find a whole lot more than big fighting robots. it has other themes, but they're kind of dwarfed by the big action and robots.
[editline]13th November 2015[/editline]
i'd like to hear what it is people like about the series so much to get a better idea of what it is i don't really understand
out of all the shows about big fightin robots out there, evangelion is probably the one that least focuses on them. hell, wasn't end of evangelion meant to be a more action packed version of the series' ending because people thought it didn't have enough originally?
it might seem like a minute difference but i like it more than other robot anime because they're not like robots. Hideki Anno's designs are really fucking cool to me. the organic/cyborg/space armor aesthetic is wild (strong Metroid vibes, a series which produced some of my very favorite scifi designs), and they move the way you'd expect fashion sketches to. every movement is hyper stylized and it makes for some really satisfying, watchable battle sequences.
the other reason i like it is the story nails an atmosphere found only here and there in scifi, where humanity is basically already over the fucking brink, but such crazy shit is happening that you still sympathize and you're not just rolling your eyes when the next terrible thing comes along. i see it a lot in the W40k verse, especially in stories about the Imperial Guard, as well as in the first few Halo games, and you get tastes of it in the Song of Ice and Fire books, with a truckload of it in the His Dark Materials saga. it's a really fine line to strike in worldbuilding, one that requires heavy losses and tragedies yet still hopeful moments and interesting, subversive plot lines.
you're right that the series centers around the robots vs. monsters structure. it would definitely be much less appealing if the kids were just like, superpowered teens fighting against tons of video game enemies like 85% of popular action anime. it's a real staying force. but outside of the budget-blowing CG-fests there are still reasons to enjoy the series. i won't go into it too much but you get believable interactions and interesting developments that poke at your left brain when the series isn't superstimulating your right with explosive set pieces.
I think the series probably isn't your cup of tea, that's all. for sure it's a very polarizing series.
[editline]12th November 2015[/editline]
Unit-02 is like my no. 1 favorite scifi mecha
also asuka is cool as hell
she is a bamf 14 year old
Also, at this point i should probly add that it's very reasonable to be very put off by the super fucking creepy Evangelion fanbase
was gonna post about how im not one of those aforementioned creepy people and that she's my favourite character based solely on her arc in the series but realised that would just make me look like a creep trying not to look like a creep, so like, whatever, man ;/
anywho I rewatched Jackie Brown earlier today, liked it a lot more than I did the first time I saw it (which was like, two years ago, or something like that?) I guess going in knowing what is happening means you get to appreciate it a bit more, plus when I saw it last I wasn't as much into films as I am now, so that probably helped.
oh, saw Tremors for the first time as well today, what a fucking fantastic movie. [sp]the way they killed the last Graboid made me giggle like a lunatic, and the shot where they turn away from the one that smashes through their wall into the basement and we see the wall of guns for the first time was fucking superb[/sp]
Nightcrawler
Really strong directorial debut. As per usual, Jake Gylenhall is fuckin great and his character is very interesting. [sp]that one shot of him staring intensely at the dying competitor guy who said "brah" was amazing.[/sp] the cinematography was also quite impressive
however, i had a couple of issues. it was fairly light on the story, and i thought the soundtrack was absolutely awful. like, this is one of the few instances where i was thinking at several points during the movie about how bad the soundtrack was. its really bad.

the soundtrack is meant to be cheesy to put you into his [sp]twisted/sociopathic mindset[/sp]
were you never wondering why the music sounded all happy and uplifting when he was doing [sp]some really questionable things?[/sp]
Traffic
5/5
A really interesting look at the drug war and how both sides deal with it. Loved every minute. I think it would make an interesting pairing with Sicario.

I sort of understand this, but I generally dislike it when directors put something in their movies for the 'sake' of being bad, or cheesy, etc.
but, no
if you understand it then you'd see it's not just there for the "sake of being cheesy." they have a clear objective they're trying to roll with
the soundtrack is trying to make you feel uncomfortable and creeped out by what he's doing, even if you didn't like it it still works for the simple fact that you noticed
I sort of understand this, but I generally dislike it when directors put something in their movies for the 'sake' of being bad, or cheesy, etc.
except it's not just for the sake of being cheesy? it's basically an ironic score. the music illustrates the protagonists warped perspective.
Spectre spoilers
[sp]Yeah I know, there were good reasons for everything happening and it did all make sense, it just felt a little disjointed. Like I'm still not sure why that guy came to pick them up at the abandoned train station, did Blofeld keep eyes on that at all times or something? Also I know that it was a little while before they had sex, but it just seemed a little silly how she was all 'I'm not going to fall for you Bond', and then she's all over him after the fight with Jaws 2. [/sp]
[sp]Well, yes, he did have eyes on them at all times; that's why Hinx got on the train to fight with Bond. And considering he was expecting them since they didn't manage to kill him at the clinic...[/sp]
[sp]By the way, it was a bit too unbelievable that no staff checked up on what all the commotion was with the two of them throwing eachother through walls and stuff (Bautista and Bond and I mean). It seemed like if it wasn't vital that they end up at the station for Blofeld's crater lair, the conductor would have freaked and stopped the train.[/sp]
[sp]You'll notice the train goes strangely empty after Hinx shows up. Chances are the train conductor had gotten a stern talking (or punching) to from Hinx or SPECTRE or anyone else.[/sp]
[sp]Also the wardrobe issues, everybody looked great, but there were minor things that just didn't sit quite right with me. Madeleinne specifically not changing into nightclothes in front of James, and then in the next scene she's in a nightdress all of a sudden, for example. Or Lucia Sciarra wearing a corset after sex even though she wasn't wearing one before.
[sp]That's what one calls 'implied scene', at least on Madeleinne's case. Lucia was such an one-note character I can't really talk about her.[/sp]
[sp]And yeah they both have the money to buy appropriate clothes, but I couldn't imagine the shopping scenes. I know I'm nitpicking here but that has to mean something if I was noticing that they look like they were dressed by a costume department for one of the most expensive movies ever made.[/sp]
[sp]This is something that happens in every Bond movie. He always has the right clothes. Also is it really that hard to see them stopping by a Morocco market or taking Madeleinne's clothes from the clinic or anything like that?[/sp]
it really isn't. even the action was boring. why do you like the movie?
I thought the action was great, Christoph Waltz- as always- is entertraining, even if his character is a little thin, Bautista was a good henchman, Craig is very charismatic as Bond as always, the MI6 supporting cast remains very well casted, and the action was pretty fun, especifically the chase scene down the snow.
And I'm just really happy to see classic Bond elements return, especially when seen through the eyes of the modern Bond.
バトル・ロワイアル Battle Royale (Kinji Fukasaku, 2000)
Easy 9/10
I loved the atmosphere, the dynamic direction. Brilliant script. The soundtrack was fantastic too. The only thing that was sub-par at times was the acting. Other than that, it's really solid.

i think we all get the music tries to do that. Its the part where it doesnt work that make people say that kind of thing. I have heard tons of ironic ost's and this doesnt really work the first time you see it.

I wouldn't say the acting is sub-par, just amazingly over the top.
- Guys, we could watch the Peanuts movie. Sure, that strip isn't exactly an interest for us, but I hear it's a pretty good movie and faithful to the source material-
- No, we are going to watch the Last Witch Hunter-
This is pretty much the decisive proof that my friends do pick questionable movies on purpose and they do that because they revel in my misery
if you already know your friends have shit taste why even ask them to watch with you
What can I say, I enjoy the company at the very least
I do LOVE to complain about the movie afterwards
As someone who is a very big fan of the strip I thought the Peanuts Movie was very disappointing
If you appreciate Peanuts for its subtlety or insight, the movie isn't for you. It's very fast paced, slapsticky and kid focused, and none of the characters really do or say anything new (in fact a good amount of the lines are lifted straight from old specials). Not to mention it seems to get distracted with a billion subplots
It's a decent kid's movie, sure, but it's not a Peanuts movie really. Most people seem to like it so maybe I'm just a curmudgeon
i will never understand how charlie brown has such a big following. never interested me as a kid and i still don't see the appeal

Calvin and Hobbes is the far superior comic strip anyway
Calvin and Hobbes is the far superior comic strip anyway
While this is true, I really like Peanuts because it was the comic strip that got me into comics and animation in general
I watch the Christmas special and listen to the soundtrack every year

I see. It must be a Japanese thing.
ゴジラ対ガイガン|Godzilla vs Gigan (1972) - 7.5/10
A silly, campy, but alltogether classic Godzilla movie. The heroes are just every day folks, the story is clean cut and gets to the point, and the monster effects are absolutely fantastic.
Corn Hippy makes up for any dull moments

sorry, but a real peanuts movie would be hand-drawn, not this 3d nonsense like they did with peabody & sherman.
tbh i like the style from what i've seen. for "hand-drawn turned into CG", it could've been a lot worse, ie this
Going to see the Peanuts movie tomorrow knowing literally nothing about it going in. Fingers crossed that it's not a cash-in.
My brother says its really good.
