The Devil and Daniel Johnston - 8/10
I was in the mood for a movie since it's been a little while, always down for documentaries about musicians, so I checked this out not knowing very much about Daniel Johnston other than he does lo-fi singer-songwriter stuff and has a cult following. Very surprised to find out that it was a respectful, heartfelt documentary about someone who lives and breathes nothing but his art and wants nothing else than to share it. A definite recommendation.
imo by far the best character is the ss officer who only gets better as the season goes on
i watched the first episode of this and was bored out of my mind. its so completely devoid of any interesting characters
The first episode only sets up the "main" protagonists which are probably the least interesting characters, there's some antagonist-like characters that appear later that are waaaaay more interesting.
so i saw the good dinosaur. thought it was a perfectly fine diversion, nothing stellar but better than most animated affairs. unexpectedly the film is pretty much a western with dinosaurs which was kinda cool. also i think its the best animation quality wise i have ever seen. on a big screen the landscapes actually look real and the water is incredible. wouldnt go out of your way to see it but its a fine watch if you end up catching it
did you see casino royale or any of the previous films?
[sp]mr. white is a member of spectre and the sub-organization quantum. the bad thing about nine eyes is that it was a complete setup by spectre, who organized terrorist attacks around the world to convince intelligence committees to pool their data together so that spectre would basically have an eye on the entire world. this is bad because nobody should have that kind of power, and it also refers back to the whole drones vs man idea going on in the film. also, as to why they let bond into the meeting, my guess is they knew that the dude in mexico was killed since C was a spectre mole, and passed word that bond would most likely find his way around.[/sp]
I've seen them just not since they were in theaters. QoS in particular wasn't very memorable.
Since there isn't really a general movie thread on FP, can anyone recommend some good WW1 movies?

To add on to this: Watch both versions of All Quiet, and find the Uncut version of the 1979 version if you can as they both do different things (for better or for worse) with the same material.
Other movies:
Joyeux Noel
The Lost Battalion (2001 version, 1919 one is good too)
Gallipoli

Johnny Got His Gun
If you want something a bit more Patriotic for Americans watch Sergeant York .
I'd personally skip Passchendaele if you were thinking about watching that.

Oh and for a surreal and satirical look at the war, watch "Oh! What a Lovely War!", an anti-war musical about WWI. The only songs sung are period songs.

Oh, and I almost forgot about Beneath Hill 60! That's really good as well.
What We Do in the Shadows
I can't remember what was the last new comedy that entertained me so much. Really great humor that doesn't treat their viewers as idiots.
Iron Man 3: 8/10. It was alright. Felt a bit dull and I didn't really like the villain. I think it could have been better without the twist.
So, I've been trying to shave some "shameful unseen classics" off my list and I watched Silence of the Lambs for the first time...and wow, that was pretty underwhelming
Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are undeniably amazing and they have great chemistry and I liked how the movie had an overall "grimy" feeling to it, but the screenplay meandered around way too much and it was very hard to really care about what happened. [sp]Hannibal escaping the prison[/sp] felt entirely unnecessary. I feel like with a proper script revision this could have been a much better film; it felt too muddled and unfocused to really scare me or affect me. I'd give it about a 6/10.

Sergeant York is pretty good.
Iron Man
5/5
Haven't watched this one in a while and I still think it's one of the better Marvel movies. Hell, the first forty minutes or so could have made a great movie all on its own. And I still really like how simple it all is. There's no giant 1 vs 100 battle like most of the Phase II films, it's just two guys in suits duking it out. Most of the movie is just Tony building and refining the suit. It's simple, straightforward and its great.
Marvel owes so much to RDJ and Favreau.
Imagine if Iron Man was bad.
rdj is basically tony stark and tony stark is rdj
one of the few modern cases of 100% perfect casting

The Night Before - 4/10
Had some decently funny moments but it was mainly just watching Seth Rogan trip on shrooms for 2 hours.

The plot is still better than all the other Iron man movies.
Watching the development of Iron man was great.
I love this scene

Oh hey IGN.
A 6/10 would be an alright movie. An 8/10 movie would be a great movie.
the last hobbit actually had some great moments like thorins descent into madness
however, i had too many issues with it to enjoy it [sp]why force yourself to begin the last movie with killing smaug, arguably the coolest part of the whole series? why have 3 movies at all? why would you focus so much of this movie on fucking ALFRED? worse than jar jar binks[/sp]
Erm, did I miss some sort of inside joke? I mean, I really think IM3 was an 8/10. I also agree that first Iron Man was my favorite. The plot and the build-up were great.
Edit: Oh, alright. Well I mean it was an alright film, just had a few slip-ups, things I thought could have been handled better. I'll agree that I'm a bit crap at rating stuff.
Er Ist Wieder Da / Look Who's Back
7/10
Went to the movie because the concept seemed very funny, Adolf Hitler suddenly waking up in Berlin, 2014. The movie was a combination of humor and slightly trying to get a message across, the movie starts with all the funny stuff but around the middle, Hitler starts to interview random people on their views of the current state of Germany. They respond that immigrants need to be deported and that Merkel should be moved out as well, then Hitler usually responds with a very insightful answer and that in turn makes him a bit like the good guy of the movie.
Hitler starts appearing in TV shows and soon people all over the country are agreeing with his views not on a funny or ironic basis but that they actually agree that Germany needs a big reformation where immigrants and refugees should go to their own country and that Germany should be made great once again.
Won't spoil much about it, the ending sends out the final message that such movements are actually happening all over the world and that this movie wanted to show how bad things could go.
Downsides where that it dragged along too much at some points, the completely fucking pointless love and sex scenes and i would like to have seen more legit reactions, people where strangely really calm over the fact that Hitler walks around Berlin.

Ratings don't meant that much, it's just to say a movie is okay then give it an 8/10 is a bit of a contradiction; 8/10 is a pretty damn high score.
not to start a bandwagon of personal opinions but in my mind,
5/10 - pretty much average. the definition of alright or 'meh.' it does as many things good as it does bad, or it's just unremarkably okay across the board. Ex: Philomena, Cowboys and Aliens, Fast & Furious 6
6/10 - slightly better than most similar movies. Star Wars: the Phantom Menace (gets a lot of points for worldbuilding), Cloverfield, This Is the End, Avengers 2
7/10 - this movie was flawed but pretty darn good. Dawn of the Dead (2004), Pacific Rim, I Am Legend, Pineapple Express, Chronicles of Riddick, the Great Gatsby, Paranorman, the Invention of Lying, Bruce Almighty
8/10 - this movie was great. Flaws are excusable against everything that was done well. Iron Man, [REC], Lincoln, Big Hero 6, Argo, Jurassic Park
9/10 - this movie was wonderful. Star Wars, the Babadook, Casino Royale (2006), Shaun of the Dead, Metal Gear Solid 3, Princess Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Fargo, the Grand Budapest Hotel, Office Space, Silence of the Lambs, the Truman Show
10/10 - personally amazing. Not necessary flawless because there's no such thing as a perfect film, but a 9/10 that is also one of my favorites. The Usual Suspects, Alien, Fury Road, Spirited Away, Hot Fuzz, the Life Aquatic

not to start a bandwagon of personal opinions but in my mind,

Metal Gear Solid 3
...I approve though, the cinematic value of games deserves to be highlighted.
Watched Casino completely for the first time in a while. I'm going to say to me its a 9 out of 10. To me its just so well put together and beautifully shot and greatly acted it deserves nothing less imo.
speaking of, what did you guys think about the 2013 great gatsby?
mostly, i loved leo as gatsby but i felt that toby macquire was miscast. i also don't like the directors use of modern music (especially how fucking often he uses that lana del ray song), but I felt they did a pretty good job of portraying a lot of great moments from the book
Also, my own rating system:
10/10: literally perfect in my personal opinion. Never had a film reach it though, but I believe it's possible.
9/10: amazing; probably better than expected, a personal favourite.
8/10: great; would recommend to anyone.
7/10: quite good; the flaws are apparent but it's got many redeeming qualities. Would recommend to those who like the genre.
6/10: okay; not really good but so close it should be worth watching for fans of this kind of film.
5/10: meh; it has a few good ideas and concepts, but its many major flaws ruined it.
4/10: bad; it tried so hard and got so far.
3/10: quite bad; they should have known this wasn't going to work out.
2/10: terrible; just why would you even try.
1/10: disgusting; the people who made this have dishonored their ancestors and cursed their children for a 1000 generations.
0/10: inhumane; every second makes me want to kill myself. Not supposed to exist, but who knows.
Sadly, the rating system of today is:
10 - Designed, filmed, programmed and played by God himself.
9 - It is better then good
8 - It is good
7 - Its decent
6 - Its terrible
5 - Its terrible
4 - Its terrible
3 - Its terrible
2 - Its terrible
1 - Its fucking terrible
