people actually use their phones at the cinema? i've never really seen that here, before every movie it's strongly noted to turn off phones during it, and people seem to oblige..
I'm noticing it in almost every movie I see these days, if not right in front of me then somewhere out of the corner of my eye. I'd like to be unfazed by it but I find it super distracting.
So long story short, due to things of my doing, me and a couple of friends got our own private showing of TFA at like 2am in a full size theater tonight, pretty fucking awesome
Saw the True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma remakes because fuck stars and space, the old west is where it's at Never saw either of the originals but both were solid. 3:10 to Yuma was the more fun film that I'd probably be more inclined to watch again soon, but on the other hand, True Grit had plenty of outstanding performances and a more unique plot than I expected from a western. No point in rambling, I pretty much liked them equally. Go watch them
all i saw of bone tomahawk was a guy getting scalped and then sliced in half in gruesome detail, not sure its the movie for me
It's a long movie with only a few scenes of violence, but they are pretty brutal. It's still well worth watching for everything else as well. That's by far the most violent scene of the movie.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 7.5/10 this review will be in three parts NO SPOILERS Pretty good overall, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it was missing a certain je ne sais quoi. Visually it fits in pretty well with the other movies - some things (most notably the camera work) are updated, but as far as production design and the overall feel of the movie is right there. There are flaws with the narrative and pacing but when JJ gets it right it's bang-on. The new cast is all pretty great, I'm actually cool with the torch being passed to these guys. It's also going to be incredibly hard to review this objectively - I grew up with the Star Wars movies (watching the OT as a kid and the prequels came out in my youth) so it's hard to be objective (about the OT or about this one). Also this movies suffers (?) from being the first in a trilogy - it'll probably improve in hindsight, but it's not quite up there with Fellowship of the Ring where you might just watch this one on its own. MILD SPOILERS, some minor stuff but no major plot points [sp]Interesting twists and turns with the new characters and settings - we really don't know a whole lot about what happened in the past 30 years in this universe and it's interesting as it gets sussed out from a wide variety of perspectives and sources. The interplay between Finn, Rey, and Poe and BB-8 is excellent and natural. The age of the returning cast adds a slight melancholy to the proceedings, too. Ford being old and grumpy in real life really works in favor of Solo's character. I thought that things actually tied in pretty well - stuff like the Falcon's return were cool. A lot of beats were borrowed from earlier movies - it sort of veers between "neat homage" and "yeah, yeah, I've seen this before" though.[/sp] MAJOR SPOILERS, seriously stay out of this if you haven't seen the movie [sp]Gonna get this out of the way: I don't understand the politics of this movie. What shape is the galaxy in? Is the damaged Empire still trying to stay in charge via the First Order, or has the New Republic taken over? How do you have a Republic AND a Rebellion? I guess I'm supposed to feel bad for the Republic but when I see them for all of five seconds before they get annihilated I don't really care. Similarly with Leia - it's cool that she's a general but the whole Republic/Rebellion thing is fuzzy (and shouldn't she be at least somewhat involved with the government?). Also there's next to no mention of her force/Jedi abilities, which felt odd. Grand Master Snoke is boring (can't touch the great charisma of McDiarmid's Palpatine) and looks way too CGI. Again that'll probably improve with sequels but he's not that impressive and I've just been told not shown that he's powerful and intimidating. By contrast, Kylo Ren is very interesting and I quite like how multifaceted his character is. He's not as dark and mighty as he lets on, and Driver does a great job selling his conflict and lust for power. RIP Han Solo, a thousand curses on the internet for spoiling that for me three times. It was a great last hurrah for the character, and you do see how Solo has changed and grown (both through the original trilogy and the 30 years since). I guess Harrison finally got his wish, haha. Can't wait for more Luke![/sp]
MAJOR SPOILERS, seriously stay out of this if you haven't seen the movie [sp]Gonna get this out of the way: I don't understand the politics of this movie. What shape is the galaxy in? Is the damaged Empire still trying to stay in charge via the First Order, or has the New Republic taken over? How do you have a Republic AND a Rebellion?[/sp]
[sp]The galaxy is split between the New Republic which was founded after Endor, and The First Order who modeled themselves after the Empire. The Resistence against the First Order is being funded by the New Republic (and it's not even really supposed to be all that well know that they're funding the Resistance, it's a backhanded politics thing, though the First Order found out which is why they destroyed those planets with Starkiller Base), even though they're not really at war with the First Order.[/sp]
I liked Force Awakens more than Empire Strikes Back. Fight me.
SW:TFA was pretty good, it didn't really live up to all the hype it generated but I could've seen it go in a far worse direction then it did. Visually pleasing though the scene on the planet that I've already forgotten the name of with the downed ships was neat. 7/10 would probably have to watch it again to form a better opinion
TFA is my 3rd favorite Star Wars movie, after ANH and ESB.

Just rewatched Return of the Jedi, solid 6/10 I don't see Force Awakens until Wednesday, so I might watch The Hidden Fortress between now and then - partly because it's a big influence on Star Wars and a Kurosawa film I haven't seen yet
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - Fun film. I personally think more films need cowboy Jeff Goldblum as a character. [editline]18th December 2015[/editline] Also look what came in the mail today. :) [t]http://i.imgur.com/i8H5RsJ.jpg[/t]
SW TFA 3.5/5 Thought it was pretty good but nothing groundbreaking
Mulholland Drive - Holy shit, that was amazing. I will definitely have to watch it again sometime because that was a lot to take in.
TFA's impact would had been even greater to everyone if the music score as prominent as it was in the rest of the series.
TFA's impact would had been even greater to everyone if the music score as prominent as it was in the rest of the series.
It doesn't have an imperial march or duel of the fates but it sure stands it's own. listen to it separate from the movie. they have great songs but didn't incorporate them well into the movie. There's also nothing about the music that's strikingly memorable.
to be honest it felt really weird not having the 20th Century Fox fanfare leading into it. Williams composed the Star Wars theme to fit in with it, and the little fanfare-silence (a long time ago...)-blare (STAR WARS) is a really great hook that's gone now.
Star Wars 7: [sp]DID THEY THROW PHASMA IN THE TRASH COMPACTOR OR NOT?![/sp] [sp]Really though, I was surprised at how they treated her character. There was kind of a lot of hype about her before hand and she pretty much does nothing in the movie. And the thing she does do? Gets forced at gunpoint to lower the shield. She's supposed to be a tough commander and she just shuts down the shield instead of resisting in any way, saying she'd rather die than shut the shield down or some such line like I'd imagine someone in her position would. And they really should have shown if they actually killed her or not.[/sp] That's really my only gripe about the movie, and it's a stupid one that doesn't matter. Everything else was fantastic. Loved Kylo Ren. [sp]The fact that we haven't seen a young, emotional, partially trained dark jedi in a movie before was neat to see. Maul would come closest to that in age, but was well trained and practically devoid of emotion, and otherwise we've only seen old men on the dark side. Though similarly as with Phasma, we hear the line that Ren should be brought to Snoke but we never actually see them leave/survive. We were always shown Vader/Sidious/Dooku etc. surviving at the end of the other films. Would have liked to have seen all their fates instead of just being told.[/sp]
Kiki's Delivery Service 8.5/10 Classic Studio Ghibli film. Probably not their best, but definitely worth watching. I'm surprised at how fantastic it looks, considering it came out in 1989. If anything, it proves that art>technical prowess. Enjoyable for both kids and adults, but i was a bit surprised at the [sp]"She wants to draw me." "What, naked?"[/sp] joke. Johnny Mnemonic (Japanese Version) 8/10 Good Cyberpunk film, first time seeing it. If this is the extended Japanese cut of the film, i can't imagine what they hacked out of the other version. Probably can't watch the other version of the film after watching this version. Because VR is a thing now, some of it's believable. I'll be disappointed if at some point someone doesn't create a VR program that doesn't look like it's from the 90's. That ending had some silly moments, [sp]"He's a fish!?" "He's a mammal."[/sp]. Still would recommend it.
The Force Awakens - 8/10 Everything narrative wise was great until the third act. I think everyone has already said most of what can be said about that. MAJOR SPOILERS ----- [sp]The way that the death of arguably the most popular character in the entire franchise was pushed aside, except for two "I'm sad" scenes that lasted a total of 2 minutes, actually made me mad.[/sp] ----- END MAJOR SPOILERS. But although the story is extremely important to any movie, it's still only one factor. Everything else was just fantastic. It has by far the most exciting action in any of Star Wars movies. The lightsaber fights are far more restrained than the Prequel trilogy yet has so much more strength and energy than both that and the Original trilogy. Everything about the design was absolutely beautiful and again, I think it surpasses the design in both the Original and Prequel trilogies. Everything was so awesome looking, and in my opinion has some shots that are comparable to the classics like the Binary Sunset. One thing that definitely outright sucked was the entire cast of the First Order outside of Kylo Ren. Domnhall Gleeson's character was too Hitler and lacked any charisma, whoever that supreme leader guy is just a CGI mess and was generally really boring to listen to (he seriously reminds me of those terrible CGI alien leaders in some of the Marvel movies), and Phasma literally did nothing after the first scene [sp](although I really think she's coming back for the next movie, I doubt she died in the trash compactor)[/sp] Ren himself was a really interesting character, but I couldn't not get distracted by how ugly Adam Driver was every time he took off the mask. It's ridiculous. I personally had no problems with the excessive fanservice, I just found myself smiling every minute for the first half of the movie. I also have no idea why you guys think it was too much of a "comedy" at all. I feel like everyone's forgetting how much the trio bantered in the original trilogy, as well all the goofy dumb aliens that were there for comedic relief, especially in ROTJ (stupid aliens were not introduced with Jar Jar). I really think the three new leads are great (as well as BB) and I can't wait to see them in the next movies. The other new characters outside of the First Order are also pretty good. I was expecting myself to not like Maz (spelling?) but she's pretty good. And basically the whole presentation of it all was just phenomenal, it feels just like the original trilogy with a modern coat of paint. If it weren't for how sloppy the final act was, I don't think I'd be too ashamed by saying that I liked it as much as TESB. But yeah the last bits weren't great.

I was also surprised at how good it looked even without today's 3D enhancement tech.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (absolutely no spoilers) Premise: I'm not a star wars fan, I didn't go crazy over the originals and didn't care at all for the prequels. I won't repeat what has been said already, so I'll keep it short. I had a blast, the movie was pure entertainment, emotion and intrigue. It's very much a huge spectacle of galactic warfare and very very interesting characters (new and old). I completely understand the accusation of it being a partial rehash of older material, but most of that is just a backdrop for the character's stories so I was completely fine with it. We must keep in mind that this is the first of a trilogy, and potentially endless sequels, spin offs and whatever else they'll come up with. And in being that it succeeds at consolidating a base on which to build story pathways. JJ abrams had an enormous responsibility, and I can tell that he worked had at delivering new things while keeping it faithful to the original films. You can't really blame him for not coming up with some incredibly original and risk-taking movie. He played safe but he is completely justified. And from a technical standpoint, oh boy, seriously... the mise en scene is phenomenal. The cinematography was truly something special, the score was just spot on, and the acting was really surprisingly good. It's not perfect tho, the pacing could be considered a little bit off, and the constant 'epic' introductions to older characters and stuff could get annoying (especially during a rewatch). But I believe they have done all they could and haven't disappointed at all. I'd give it an 8.5/10, one of the better movies to come out this year.
Beat me up, but I watched Boy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Fucking 7/10 man. It was riddled with cliques, but I actually got a decent pallet of laughs out of it.
Alien vs Predator - 6/10 It's the most comic-book-turned-movie I've ever seen other than the Punisher. It has its flaws, sure, but you have to understand that there was no way this movie could have lived up to the hype generated by the games/comic books. It's a fun romp and there isn't a lack of the ultra-violence. I like the movie for what it is: a Sci-Fi fight between two of the biggest extraterrestrial names of all time. Could have jumped for an R? Sure. Could have been in the future? Preferably. Is it at least fun? Of course.
Burn After Reading - 5/10 I liked how I didn't know where it was going at any point of the story, but all the characters were so utterly unlikable (and not in an interesting Joffrey or Killgrave kind of way) that I was kind of glad when it ended because I didn't have to watch them anymore.

La Jetée - Well done short film. Interesting idea how [sp]the only shot with motion was the one of the woman in the bed[/sp]. Great atmosphere.
idk i feel like the force awakens doesnt need to have a bunch of dumb expositions just to explain to you that [sp]some characters survived/died, thats just dumb and im sure everyone can wait at least 2 or 3 more years before we can find out[/sp]
[sp]I was more thinking not for the sake of 'having to show every little thing to the dumb audience', but I think the end of 7 was far too positive. There needed to be just a quick shot/scene somewhere between Lazer Planet exploding and the end of the movie setting up the evil still out there. We get that shot in all the other movies except RotJ, which should be the 1 and only completely positive/celebratory ending of the others.[/sp]
Star Wars: The Force Awakens 8.5/10 Well well, I had extremely low expectations for this film and its come out as my second favourite film behind Mad Max Fury Road. I'm going to suggest you guys just skip the reviews and go in as blind as possible.
[sp]they already blew up a bunch of planets killing god knows how many billions of people so it's already pretty dark if oyu ask me[/sp]
