TR-8R and his sick spins is the highlight of the whole movie tbh

based riot trooper just cracking heads, not even flinching at a lightsaber

also iirc Ray's ability to fly shit decently is because she [sp]found a flight simulator while scavenging one time, its mentioned in one of the comics or something[/sp]
its bullshit that some of the stuff that explains what look like plotholes or inconsistencies can only be found in the reading material when this is the beginning of a new franchise but yeah
aren't you supposed to read the book first (this doesn't work if it's a manga) so that you can create the world and characters look with your imagination, rather than a movie doing it for you?
if you see the movie, you'll always see the movie characters and world when you read it.
but if you read the book first, you sort of create your own world.
not that i read books. i can't be bothered. but telling other people to watch a movie first seems wrong because it's not very imaginative.
Yeah, and reading a book first can lead to creating your own image of characters completely different from the one presented by the movie, which will totally ruin the experience. I think reading a book beforehand is still the right move in some cases, but mostly because sometimes it just helps to get a clue of what's even going on on the screen. I mean, some films just don't bother explaining their world or do it in a rather lazy manner.
Anyone got any recommendations for good romance movies
problem is that most of them suck
[editline]27th December 2015[/editline]
Am I also the only one who can't watch movies without subtitles?
I don't tend to watch romance movies either, but I might as well get the Her recommendation out of the way.
Paper Moon
8/10
And yeah, I have ADD and I find that subtitles help a lot, because it's really easy for me to just not process spoken dialogue if I'm not paying full attention. Somehow having text to read makes it a lot harder to miss.

Plus its real useful when the fucking characters are whispering and you can't hear shit
500 days of summer is a great movie about romance but its not a movie you would want to watch on a date, if thats the sort of thing youre looking for

500 Days of Summer is great.
Love & Other Drugs is also a good one, too. Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are great together
I also really enjoyed Silver Linings, it was a pretty cute movie

Speaking of Star Wars, I'm rewatching the series (Machete Order) and A New Hope (1977) is super bad at times because of the weird cuts and often times bad acting.
I'm hoping this is only cause it's the first movie, and the following ones are gonna be amazing.
If you looking for a cheesy romance movie to watch on a date, Love Actually is a solid choice

About Time is definetly worth checking out
Oh shit, that reminds me! The Time Traveler's Wife is an alright movie. The book is way, way better.
punch drunk love
it's an adam sandler movie, is that a genuine recommendation or is it just for laughs?
Lemony Snicket: The Series of Unfortunate Events
Damn, how I loved this film ten years ago. I was worried watching it now, but that was unnecessary - the film is still dope: direction is crazy good, same with acting and make-up/costumes, music was fine, the story sometimes drags, but that's what you get trying to squeeze few books into one film.
The film actually set a high bar for the TV series, unless they'll get Jim Carrey again.

it's one of my all time favorites

Because I've been waiting for a non-Force user to best a lightsaber in combat in a Star Wars movie for years

Name aside, I also liked Snoke a big deal
its directed by paul thomas anderson tho who is one of the best directors working today
Spotlight
It's a solid film. By that I mean that there's nothing wrong with this film, it's well done from all the aspects. My issue with it is that it is very basic. It is just the retelling of actual events that happened 15 years ago, and real-life story is what defends itself. The film adds nothing of value, it could be as well a documentary.
I have a theory why it scores 1st place in this years Top 10s and why it's a lock for critics' awards - it romanticizes journalists' job. It presents reporters as these "ordinary" heroes doing god's work and their investigation as a interesting and dynamic process. That bias is somehow understandable - Birdman scored last year so high among people of film because it presented the process from behind the curtains, giving them something to relate to.
It's not a bad film by all means, it just lacks the 'magic', something that can glue the viewer to the screen - here it is expected that the story that happened will do just fine, and for the people that will hear about it for the first time it certainly will do, but for the rest - no, I don't see it. It's Argo all over again, where we got a solid, even film but one month later nobody remembered anything from it, because it was that forgettable.

Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight are probably the best modern romance put on screen. It's just so different, it's about rather different aspects of love and romance than your typical film from that genre. Oh, and it's entirely dialogue driven, which helps a lot if you're after some substance not just boring cliche.
oh and if you are looking for other types of romance
Weekend, and Brokeback Mountain
Damn, I just found out Daisy Ridley is 23 years old. Made me feel so inadequate, seeing as I'm the same age and my life is so dull compared to hers.

John Boyega too!

see, now that would depend on the book.
for example, everyone in harry potter was very detailed so that when the trailer for the first movie came out, anyone who read the book was instantly analyzing what was right and what was wrong.
but, i read the novelization of revenge of the sith before i saw the movie and had completely forgotten what the characters looked like, to the point that i had to rewatch episode 2 to have a reference to go by.

it's actually the only genuinely good film sandler has been in.

Probably not really a spoiler but whatever: [sp]Right after their first flight in the Falcon when they run to each other and they're both yelling and congratulating each other and he says "how'd you do that?" she says "I've flown loads of ships before but never left the planet" but it's all said really fast and loud and at the same time as each other so it's easy to miss.[/sp]

Pretty much all of my faves have been mentioned except Richard Linklater's Before trilogy
The entire trilogy is fantastic, they're essentially dialogue marathons between two characters that feel extremely real and interesting, and it really showcases how relationships are so much more than just love. I'm not a huge Linklater fan but I adore these, Before Sunrise is one of my favorite films of all time
