its directed by paul thomas anderson tho who is one of the best directors working today
it's not though?

The Big Short 9/10: an exciting movie about an incredibly dull concept. Superb acting drives a great narrative, and the directional style is superb. The movie breaks down the weird concepts into digestible topics, but if you have no knowledge of the securities industry you could be lost at times

oh thought you meant the other sandler film mentioned
The Quiet Earth - Pretty good scifi film. I enjoyed how the ending was [sp]mostly ambiguous instead of doing some plot reversing bullshit like many similar films would have done.[/sp]
The Lobster Holy shit that was good. Definitely one of the best films of this year, but for sure it's an acquired taste - it's metaphor-heavy - it seems like something straight out of "avant-garde" theatre than cinema but I liked it. A good critique of current dating subculture and a nice romance altogether. And Colin Farrell was great.
it's actually the only genuinely good film sandler has been in.
spoilers of course
I decided to rewatch the original Star Wars trilogy, seeing as I never properly did it before. I only ever saw snippets here and there, never the entire thing. A New Hope was alright, but it was stale at times due to the limited budget they had. Things seemed badly done in a few scenes, and the sets were really limited, so it was hard to feel fully immersed in the Star Wars universe. Empire Strikes Back is a whole other ball-game, their production values are so much better and as a result, it's a much more enjoyable experience. At the Battle of Hoth scene and it's amazing, I was shocked at the effects used in the movie, I had no idea we were this advanced in CGI / whatever it is they used in the movie in 1980. Edit: I used to think C-3PO was a nice droid, but it turns out he's a sassy, whiny little bitch. R2-D2 represent.
Get off the thread and go enjoy the rest of Empire Strikes Back, it's amazing. Hopefully you're watching the original version?
Yeah, I am. I'm watching them in Machete order, so it was IV, V and then after this, it'll be episode II. So glad Episode I is cut out of this order, cause I hated that one, and it's the one movie out of the series I've seen the most (cause it was always on TV growing up). It's great, I'm having a blast watching it.
wtf is with this order? everything ever should be watched in release order 4-6, then 1-3, because they are prequels and rely on information you're meant to already know.
The Machete Order is made to preserve the "Luke, I am your father" reveal of Empire. So it's only really worth using if you're completely unfamiliar with Star Wars and somehow managed to miss one of the most well known twists in film history.
The Danish Girl It's an Oscarbait at its finest, but that name doesn't automatically makes film a bad one. Here it has its highs but overall it's pretty boring. Redmayne is flat and basically non-existent as an actor, but at least Alicia Vikander shines, she basically steals every scene she's in. But that's not enough. Not recommended. [sp]It would work better if the focus was on their marriage problems, the very complicated love triangle and not Lily's struggle to be a woman. Or maybe the other way around, I don't know - they tried to cover both and it just didn't worked.[/sp]

The Rock becomes a better movie when you realize the english spy who has been locked up for 30 years and no country claims responsibility to played by Sean Connery is probably formerly James Bond [editline]28th December 2015[/editline]
it's actually the only genuinely good film sandler has been in.
He's been in a couple of really good films. Happy Gilmore is a classic comedy, Punch Drunk Love is a bit more dramatic, and the there's Reign Over Me which is just depressing as shit

The Martian I'm actually really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I remember having some reservations about this because 1) Interstellar was underwhelming, 2) I began to hate Ridley Scott for making mediocre films since Kingdom of Heaven. That's why I was hesitant to watch it immediately. It was awesome. Surprisingly light with tense moments, a very good space sci-fi, good to see that Ridley Scott hasn't lost his visionary touch (but it only confirms further the theory that his films are as strong as the script), the music was great and it all clicked together. Really fun, can't wait to re-watch, and that's pure cinema magic at its finest. Damn with Mad Max, Star Wars and Ex Machina it's been a really good year for sci-fi.
I was gonna see Hateful Eight today but the theater is closed because it's really icy and snowy outside. Figures.
wow guess what if you watch it in release order, it still preserves the reveal 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 2 3 6
3 is a shitty finale for the series, though everything is wrapped up and concluded nicely in 6 - the resolution to both Anakin and Luke's story
George Lucas seems to believe that Star Wars is the story of Anakin Skywalker, but it's really not - at least, not effectively. Anakin doesn't have an interesting arc - he gives into what is presented as overwhelming temptation. This is relatable, but it's not terribly interesting. Anakin only has an engaging character turn at the end of Jedi when he's redeemed, but that's not as a character, it's as a goal - something for the character we've been invested in for 3 movies (Luke) to accomplish. Anakin is, at this point in the story, a personified proxy for the entire galaxy. Saving Anakin from the Dark Side just puts a human face on saving the Galaxy from the Empire, and it proves Luke right for his unwillingness to give up on his father, even though his attempts to save him risk the entire mission. Effectively, this order keeps the story Luke's tale. Just when our main man Luke is left with the burning question "did my father really become Darth Vader?" we take an extended flashback to explain that it's true. Once we understand how his father turned to the dark side, we go back to the main storyline and see how Luke is able to rescue him from it and salvage the good in him, which is the only way to destroy the Empire. Putting the prequels in the middle in general allows the series to end on the sensible ending point (the destruction of the Empire) while still beginning with Luke's journey. The prequel backstory comes at the perfect time, because The Empire Strikes Back ends on a huge cliffhanger. Han is in carbonite, Vader is Luke's father, and the Empire has hit the rebellion hard. Delaying the resolution of this cliffhanger makes it all the more satisfying when Return of the Jedi is watched. Narratively, it's just like a movie that starts with a big opening, then fades to "2 years earlier" for most of the movie, until it catches up with the present time and concludes.

3 is a shitty finale for the series, though
that's only George Lucas' fault though. You can't make it any better by watching the wrong movie.

I like how the Jedi training consists of intensive parkour and crazy difficult bodyweight exercises. The way Yoda talked about it, I expected something a lot more... Jedi-ish? [editline]28th December 2015[/editline] Oh, forgot to mention the shroom cave, where Yoda slipped Luke some potent herbs so he could face off against a psychosis-induced Vader hallucination. [editline]28th December 2015[/editline] Yoda is the worst designated drug buddy ever.
We Need To Talk About Kevin basically the story of the mother of the worst supervillain ever. i mean, [sp]a bow? seriously? come the fuck on.[/sp] 5/10 it was ok
The Martian I'm actually really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. All of that was just skipped [/sp]
with the combination of gifts and gift cards i got Zodiac, The Thing, Mad Max, True Detective, Grand Budapest Hotel, Fargo, and No Country For Old men on dvd/bluray im fuckin hype
The Intern 6.5/10 I really liked the dynamic between Hathaway and De Niro, but the rest of the movie isn't that interesting. The annoying side characters and forced humor got on my nerves, the drama aspect is just better executed and was pretty enjoyable. Other than that, eh, I hate the whole career/business focus it has, but that's just a subjective problem more than anything. Not bad, but pretty avoidable as a whole.

The storm scenario was such a good one, cause the way he worked it out and got through it was amazing. Plus, the Rover section in the book where it goes through how he managed to fit the oxygen generator and all that crap into it and still have space. Overall, it was a really enjoyable movie, and I think it did the book justice (great cast!). Would have been even better if they managed to squeeze it all in, though, cause they left out some gems. [editline]28th December 2015[/editline] That's what I loved about the book, it could take it's time and pace everything out so you really understood what was going on. I feel the movie had to condense a lot of things, and I can see how some people may end up calling it a disgrace to science or whatever, because a lot of the sciencey shit was just too longwinded to fit into the movie.
Brooklyn Comfy and adorable at times, but then sometimes it was just boring and convoluted. I feel like I didn't get the message at the end, but it might be cause I was tired. Saoirse Ronan was okay, not stellar and astonishing as some reviews tried to describe her, but then at first I don't see anything particular about her or her acting. It's definitely better than The Danish Girl, that for sure. It doesn't try so hard.
The Force Awakens I rather enjoyed it for the most part. It is a solid continuation of the series, and I can't wait for the next episode. However, there are quite a few things I didn't like about it. [sp]First of all, fucking Rey. Rey of all people. Jesus christ, there is so much they could have done with her, but she was an overall shoddy job of a character. Master the fucking force within a few hours and beat Kylo Ren to the ground with ease. And when she made the stormtrooper release her restraints and leave with the door open (although this lead to one of the most memorable scenes in the movie). Kylo Ren was portrayed as a very powerful person at the start, with the ability to stop a blaster in its fucking tracks, and Rey beats him with the first time she actually uses the bloody lightsaber. There is also how it is almost the exact same plot of A New Hope, retold with new faces. Onto what I did like, I really liked how Kylo Ren was a wannabe Darth Vader, and it was consistent. He knew it himself that he would never be as powerful as Darth Vader, but he refused to believe it. He tries super hard to be Vader, but he isn't Vader. He has a lack of understanding why he isn't more than what he already is, which is why I think he is a great character. His tantrums were also rather amusing (especially the one where the two stormtroopers decide against walking by it). His lightsaber design was also really appealing to me, and I really liked the plasma's more sporadic and less-uniform look as opposed to the simple beams of light in the previous movies. It gave it a more sinister look. I also really liked Finn. He had a lot of personality, and the way they identified him at the start with the bloody handprint on his face was really neat. Personally, I really was not expecting this because Disney, no violence, blah blah. It really caught me off guard, and I really liked it. It was a fairly violent movie for Disney's standards, honestly, and I'm glad they included it when it really added to a scene.[/sp] Overall, 8/10.
