Oh yeah that is true. I remember reading about children and their fear for darkness, which was explained as an instinct developed a long time ago. Same goes for claustrophobia.
Actually just found out that there are two kinds of emotions. The cognitive ones and instinctual(thanks wiki). Seems reasonable.
Happiness, depression, sadness, love, all of that isn't something to keep us alive.

According to the Theory of Evolution, it is something to keep us alive. We wouldn't be born with something unless we needed it.
Also relevant, mandatory MS paint comic:

fear isn't always "of what can destroy you"
Roughly 1% of the population are psychopaths it's not that uncommon.
regular moths scare the living shit out of me D:
Whenever I watch a movie if there's people dying left and right, for some reason I see it as "wow, what suspense", but when I see ONE asian woman die, it's immediately personal.
For some reason I could give fuck all about other people but asian women are too precious to me...

not necessarily, we're not evolutionarily perfect (if we were emotions wouldn't exist, we'd be logically thinking emotionless machines)
emotions still help us survive at the moment, though
Say you have a dog. You love him and when you come home after a day of work, and it's jumping around happy to see you again. He may have a special bond with you and not another person he lives with and shows you love. You beat the shit out of it, it's going to be terrified of you. Etc...
I don't know, it's definitely not the same kind of emotions that we have, but I wouldn't say it's just instinct.
Love in animals is a very simple thing,
You care for your dog, you love him, pet him, play with him. You dog plays with you, is nurtured by you, and as a result of you, is 'happy'.
Now, the brain is a very complex and perfect thing, it associates the good feeling of being 'happy' with you, the person who makes him 'happy'.
Love, in all species, acts like a drug. You crave it, and without it, you suffer.
Humans know love, know why we love, and can choose to love. Dog's cannot. To them it's just what happens.

Agreed. Everything a creature is, is a survival machine. Some more complex than others.

they're portrayed as innocent in most every sort of media (including porn, oddly), maybe it has something to do with that

r you saying that our want to eat fatty foods is helping us survive at the moment
fear isn't always "of what can destroy you"
No of course not, I was just agreeing that fear seemed more possible to be an instinct developed a long time ago than an emotion that some possess and some don't
i have that too :haw:
ADHD doesn't exist. It's a made up "Disease" for kids raised poorly who end up being hyperactive weirdos. It has nothing to do with their brain chemicals, it's their personality.
Oh good, another one of these threads...
Nobody feels sorry for you, stop it.

So true.
r you saying that our need to eat fatty foods is helping us survive at the moment
it's called the gorge mechanism, if you're talking about HOW MUCH we eat, the brain used to make us eat large amounts of food when we found a large amount at a time so we could pace our stomachs until the next meal- it isn't needed in modern day because meals are available 24/7, but the brain still does it
and if you mean how we eat fattening foods, it's because they generally taste better, which the brain thinks means more nutritious (which is generally the case in moderation, but when the gorge mechanism comes into play...)
r you saying that our want to eat fatty foods is helping us survive at the moment
Not everyone wants to eat fatty foods.

I found an angsty teen trying to rebel against the evil doctors
Rated hearts.
But you should know better than to post this kind of stuff on FP.

to do is to have
what I mean is if you exhibit symptoms of a seemingly detrimental state, why couldn't it be a disease? shit, why couldn't we attribute bipolarity to "being raised with two sides"?

Exactly this. If supply of food continues at current levels, chances are the brain will evolve and change itself to avoid obesity.
Being self aware=/=emotions.

or our metabolism will get drastically faster as the generations progress
I agree with OP
Being self aware=/=emotions.
Most advanced emotions require self-awareness, fyi.
Being self aware=/=emotions.
Being self aware = complex brain
complex brain = complex thoughts
complex thoughts = complex emotions
Think about it

What do you think mutations are? Not everything threatens the survival of a species.
Say a dog was born with a useless foot on it's back. That dog is still capable of reproduction and survival, therefor that trait may carry on.
