In Sweden we use "mil" (guessing it would translate to mile) for distance (10 000 m = 10 km = 1 mil) while most other countries (I think Finland and Russia is still using something similar) settled with only using kilometre.
Go to Oktoberfest, order "ein Mass". That's exactly a liter beer.
Once again the metric system triumphs!

It translates to 10km actually :v:
Didn't know that. Cool.

TEN KILOMETRES!
I'd prefer the whole world use metric even though I myself use imperial because it's what I'm used to.
Also for you Brits out there, don't complain at us because you guys use stones, post your speed limit signs in mph, and gave us the imperial system in the first place.
Once again the metric system triumphs!
Thank the Germans :v:
Why do you even ask this. Metric system actually makes sense and is used in science.
Stupid americans trolling the whole world with their weird units.

That map isnt entirely true.
The UK still uses the Imperial system for things such as Speed and distance when driving, and a persons weight is normally Imperial system as well.

Officially the UK uses Metric though.

Thank the Swiss. They talk both French and German, so it's a good middle ground :v:

They were the first to adopt it, so close enough?

Did napoleon conquer the Swiss? o.O
Actually, reading up on the history of the metric system is quite interesting.

I think he did, actually.
I'd have to read up on it, but a lot of our current internal structure (Kantone) is based upon Napoleon, for example Grisons (Graubünden) was basically created by him.

Just read up on the history, The Netherlands were the first to adopt the metric system after France lost their territory's according to wikipedia :v:
No, you drive on the left side...?
Inside a car, the wheel is on the right side. It feels right, and is right.

Your "it's right because I like it and that means everybody has to like it" attitude is not welcome here.

In addition, right is not right.
Left is far superior.

Are you saying that British people all hate driving on the left (hint: we don't)
Also you tend to find that metric countries use substitute imperial measurements anyway. The soviets would use "half-kilos" when they were told they couldn't use pounds any more, and the French still sell wine by the bottle and eggs by the dozen. Rulers, of course, are 30 cm (1 foot) pretty much worldwide.
The only reason my country has not converted to the metric system is not because we are stupid, stubborn, or trying to be different, it is because if you look at our entire infrastructure and manufacturing complex, it would cost billions of dollars and working-hours to convert all of the signs, machinery, tools, etc. to metric. It would just be way too massive of an undertaking at the moment.

Signs need to be replaced after a while, why not start putting metric and imperial units on them, and then start taking away imperial units?
It'd make a smooth transition, I can imagine this happen over the duration of a few years or a decade.
I don't understand what you mean by that. As vast as my vocabulary is I don't know the word retroactive that well and my google search hasn't really helped me figure out your context.
You don't need to replace everything that still uses the imperial system at once. Everything produced prior to the change can still be used legally, while everything produced after has to use the metric system. Of course, essential things like road signs have to be replaced immediately, but not machinery and speedometers. As people buy new cars and as old machinery is replaced, the usage of the metric system will slowly increase.
Having two numbers on a road sign can be confusing.
Not that confusing.
We frequently have 2 languages on the signs here (French and English for my area due to Channel Tunnel and ferries, and English / Welsh in Wales) and it's fine. What's wrong with 2 numbers?
I think there would be a risk of drivers mixing up the numbers, so they accidentally drive faster or slower than the speed limit.
the UK.
nearly all of its cars have speedos in MPH, the news usually usese miles and feet and inches
almost every vehicle has speeds in both MPH and KPH. americans like un-american cars.
I think there would be a risk of drivers mixing up the numbers, so they accidentally drive faster or slower than the speed limit.
Drivers in the US (at least in my area) can't drive the speed limit already, they either drive way under or way over it but never exactly the speed limit. So it really wouldn't make a huge difference in my area really.
It ain't that expensive because it doesn't have to be done overnight, Christ. All you have to do is simply say "We're transitioning to metric!", things like the quarter-pounder burger and football can stay as they do (In Venezuela we order "Cuarto de libra con queso", not "Un octavo de kilo con queso"), road signs will be gradually transformed over a lapse of some years to signs using miles and kilometers, while whatever can change instantly, like packaging, just begins displaying measurements in both systems.
Eventually imperial is phased out at less than the cost it takes to run the military's AC systems, everyone is happy, and things stop being so ass backwards to foreigners.
almost every vehicle has speeds in both MPH and KPH. americans like un-american cars.
Really? I thought that was only in England and not america since americans are so used to only mph. Anyways that's useful for whenever a foreigner goes on holiday in USA and rents a car.
