americans need to stop buying cheap as shit russian ammo (barnaul, tula, whatever you call it) and complain about it. it's cheap for a reason
I've been using Sellier & Bellot 9mm, which barely costs more than the cheap Russian stuff, and it's worked flawlessly in my CZ, plus I don't have to deal with ranges getting pissy about steelcase/steel-jacketed.
The only caliber where I swear by the cheap stuff is Red Army Standard for 7.62x39 in my AK. Everything else, there's decent ammo for just a couple cents more.
i've shot some s&b .357 which was not very pleasant, they are very dirty and let out a shit load of smoke. their 5,56 (m193 type 55gr) seems to work fine however
Interesting, the S&B 9x19 I've got is the cleanest 9mm I've ever shot, minimal smoke and shiny clean cases and bore. I wonder why that might be.
could be a bad lot, i dunno. we stopped shooting because there was so much smoke everywhere.
That sounds like it. I've used close to 1000 rounds of various weights of S&B 9mm and it's very clean, cheap, and accurate.
Do you like your Monarch and TulAmmo? I have .270 Monarch and .40 TulAmmo, and both have been pretty spotty. My TulAmmo likes to jam more than Perfecta...
The Tulammo seems to work good in my 9mm, the Monarch 9mm isn't the best though, but may be more gun and magazine related, my 9mm is a Hi-Point. Monarch 7.62X54R is pretty nice though.
I stick with the cheap steel case for my roller locked rifle. It has a tendency to chew the casings and fling em far. The steel is great for rounds that you would not reload any way.
Doesn't change the issue with civilian rifle ammo being made with thinner case walls and higher pressures. Nato rated stuff is nice, but sometimes not as good of a deal.
it is very possible that my future holds a milled AKML with gigantic night vision optic. polish roots y'all
It's happening, I'm finally getting myself a nugget this month. Any suggestions as to what model? I'd prefer one with good accuracy, but something like the M44 would be fine.
why are you getting a mosin?
get something else that's worth the hundred and odd dollars
I want a rifle that fires a super cheap round that's pretty powerful. Name any bolt-action that you can buy in the states that fires a round like that for under $200 and I will buy that instead. I'm not buying one for hunting, only for target shooting.
idk, have fun with the subpar accuracy, awful triggers, shoddy bolt travel and corrosive primer cleaning i guess
I'm fine with that. I was considering a Finnish Mosin, but I'd rather not be responsible for a $400 rifle that I'd be shooting corrosive rounds through. I'm used to awful triggers too, as my Marlin 795 has a trigger pull measured in gigatons. Accuracy isn't much of an issue as I'm not intending on making 300m shots.
Any thoughts on picking up a Kar 98? I really want one but I'm not sure how much to spend, I'd honestly like to get a german made/capture with the nazi stamps just because I think it would be kinda cool but I'll settle without them.
Just need a good solid rifle.

They seem to go in the $400 range on GunBroker. You could go pick up a Savage Arms .30-06 from a local gun store for less than that.
The 91/30s that you're likely to buy are really crap rifles, I don't know why anyone would put up with them after they've gotten so expensive. They're just a tired old /k/ meme at this point, no reason to buy one unless you fancy yourself a collector or something.
[editline]6th August 2015[/editline]
I can't imagine a single person in the world who drops $200 on a 91/30 from Cabelas drenched in cosmoline, takes it to the range, and goes "Yeah. Yeah, this is really fun. Great purchase."

Buy any used Savage Axis rifle. They literally have no resale value. You might even get a scoped Axis for $250. Mosins and target shooting usually don't go together at all. The term you are looking for is plinking. A Savage Axis in .223 will feed that itch adequately.

Already have a .223, just looking for something with more bite than a .223 while not costing me the $1.10 per shot that my .243 is. I'll step back off of my idea of getting a Mosin, I'll just look towards another option.
I think I'll look for a .308 Savage like you suggested. I'd prefer some method of putting irons on it, as it's supposed to be a plinker/ target gun.
[editline]no[/editline] Ok, I am severely conflicted right now. I already have a .243 bolt action, and justifying getting a .308 would be extremely hard. I've been looking at getting a decent single shot rifle, but I want something worth it.

Get a used T/C contender.

I bought mine when they were cheap and got lucky with an all matching untapped sniper proofed rifle. Still don't shoot it that much, kind of a bigger pain than it has to be. And it's really weirdly shaped, so going to it from any other rifle is uncomfortable.

Don't buy something like that unless you know how to care for it properly, is my advice. The history they represent and the stories they can tell are worth the price, but you need to know how to keep it very clean and protected so someone else down the road can enjoy it, too. One day they'll be incredibly rare, yours could be one of the few.

The same could be said about the Mosins people consider so disposable. They made almost as many K98s as they did Mosins, yet the K98s are so much more than the Mosins. One day, the Mosins could be worth that much too.

if you don't understand the appeal of the mosin-nagant by now, you'll never understand it.

K98s were disposed of in much greater numbers than Mosins, though I don't really consider any vintage rifle disposable.

yeah I doubt that. I own a k98 and a mosin and the mosin action is total garbage while the k98 is buttery smooth
My Mosin's action is pretty tight and slick as far as Mosin actions go. Still doesn't compare to how my Enfield was. That rifle had the smoothest bolt of any rifle I've ever played with.

Don't worry, I definitely know how to care for a rifle like that.

It's all about supply and demand. Hell they made what, 6 million Garands, yet they run over a grand a piece, but they only made about 2 million SVTs, which in the US cost just as much as a Garand due to import bans, despite the massive quality difference, but up here they're only $400, because we still have a supply of them. One day the supply of Mosins will run out, and those who want one will have to pay whatever those who own them decide to sell them for. That's what happened with the Enfields, Garands, K98s, Sprinfields, and Arisakas. One day it will happen with Mosins too.

this exactly. nambu handguns are in triple digits because of scarcity. if they were modern production, they would be cheaper than the $99 cobra .22lr pistols that can't get through a mag without jamming.
the quality doesn't matter at all. when they get scarce, and only collectors with money want them, collectors will spend that money on them. look at the old surplus magazines from the fifties. you could get a no import mark artillery luger from fucking sears for $12 dollars. yes, 1950's money. adjusted for inflation, no import mark artillery luger from fucking sears for $119 and some change.
surplus is set at a fixed number. time keeps going, and people buy them up at a fluctuating, but always positive rate. it doesn't take a genius to figure out what happens to prices then.

The last Nambu I saw for sale was $800, and the guy said he had precisely 2 rounds of ammo for it that he wasn't selling. I won't buy something I literally cannot find ammo for, I'm not financially stable enough to become that kind of collector yet, and the Nambu is one of those things.
I painted in the trades and stuff on my new Glock. I like it.

the only glocks worthy of trade filling are 10mm turboglocks.
why do gun ads today have to look so stupid? look at how good (or at least, informative) they were back in the 80's and 90's.
