the edges from machining are very sharp and they've all got obvious tool marks but they're as accurate as any 1911 (ie the sights are the weak link, not the barrel or the chamber) and they function well [editline]17th August 2015[/editline] if you shoot with gloves or are willing to take a file to the gun and refinish it it's brilliant for the price
Yeah. I've fired those before. They're fun for plinking paper. I use handguns for fun/home defense so I would not opt for a 22 for that... [editline]17th August 2015[/editline] Just okay?
I worked at a large gun shop, and still occasionally do work for them, and no one there would recommend a 1911 of any variant for self or home defense. They have a loyal following, but have a bad habit of jamming and all of the guys there who have 1911's, love them, but relegate them to range toys. It was just their opinion, I don't have a 1911, and one day will get one just for the historical nature of the gun, but given the option of relying on anything the guys would chose a Sig or a Glock .45. Some of the machinists thought that the bad reliability comes from the fact that old 1911's were made with much lower tolerances than newer ones, and the new ones which are milled to a much higher standard are actually more susceptible to malfunctions because of the higher than intended tolerances. It's actually because of that, that they recommend RI 1911's over more expensive more precisely made 1911s. Again, this is all someone elses experience and opinion.

They are definitely bulky though, not a carry gun at all (in my opinion). I'd maybe consider Glock, but I figured (I forget the model) a 40 caliber once and the grip was super tiny and it kicked like a mule.
Has anyone gotten a rifle from the CMP before? just to clarify you need to join a shooting club, but do you actually have to be active in the club? For instance I've never been to an actual shooting range (i prefer private property/ innawoods). So could i just join the club and get my rifle and just forget about the club? Also I heard that the CMP is getting the armys old 1911a1s, neat

It doesn't matter if you win, just that you participated enough in competitions to prove that you care about the sport. Basically, enter some simple target matches and provide the scores. It should be 5 competitions to prove, but it may have changed. Check their site to be sure. Clubs make it easier to get into competitions.

[t]http://i.imgur.com/LzIXD5b.jpg[/t] Only put 50 rounds through her so far haven't been able to get to the range since I got it a few days ago hoping to go tomorrow and shoot a couple hundred rounds. But I have to say, I'm really liking the medium beavertail backstrap. Edit: woah let's thumb that shit

I've fired tons of 1911's, including WW2 1911's. They feel fine.
oh get you a full size glock then. baby glocks are for baby hands
Only Glock I'd own. Not a huge fan of 9mm though.
I went with 9mm because it was the cheapest to shoot and I have the problem when I start I can barely stop.
oh get you a full size glock then. baby glocks are for baby hands
Well I was hoping that firing a 40 caliber Glock that my pinky wouldn't be fucking hanging out there like I was sipping tea. [editline]17th August 2015[/editline]
I went with 9mm because it was the cheapest to shoot and I have the problem when I start I can barely stop.
45 ain't that expensive dude.
The federal 9mm rounds I got was 25$ for 100 round box if I got the same rounds in .45 it would cost me 39$ a box and it starts adding up.
45 is more fun to shoot :)
I haven't shot 45:(
I haven't shot 45:(
Damn dude. Get on that.
Bullets are bullets, the guy you shoot isn't gonna care if it is 9mm or a 45. Get a caliber you want, get good with that firearm and you're golden. I got pistols in various calibers and to me 9mm and 45 feel the same, the only reason i enjoy shooting 45 more is because it is a 1911. Though i would use a 9mm as a duty/carry weapon - more rounds, round variability (can get high/low velocity rounds), plus ammo is much cheaper which means i can shoot more, shooting more means better firing proficiency. Carry glock 17 (17+1 rounds) or carry my 1911 (7+1 rounds). I would rather carry the glock imo. Though at the range it don't matter, have fun and gun. long story short - get the gun you like in the caliber you like and don't look back

It'll "poof" on drywall.

Hey guys, speaking of Glocks. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/08/foghorn/aps-1shot-a-stock-for-your-glock-no-stamp-needed/
Hey guys, speaking of Glocks. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2015/08/foghorn/aps-1shot-a-stock-for-your-glock-no-stamp-needed/
This is ridiculous. I can buy a stock for a Glock here because the law says "once a pistol, always a pistol" so putting a stock on it doesn't matter.
Jamming problems with 1911s mostly stem from the magazine feed lips being so thin, they bend open quickly (relative to other designs) and cause double feeds and other trouble. The action itself is fine and reliable as hell in principle if the magazine is in good shape.
its great unless it's broken but it breaks easily
its great unless it's broken but it breaks easily
Bingo! Like most guns, really.
The 1911 barely tolerates any dirt or dust. It's really not a great combat handgun compared to anything made in the last 40 years.
Mine hasn't jammed due to sand/dirt yet and I'm not exactly gentle with it when shooting outdoors. A lot of my newer guns I try to see what it takes to make them fail without creating a dangerous situation, mine has held up to being dropped in sand and mud.

Ok, honestly Agent, I love .45 ACP, but I'm honestly considering switching to 9mm, want to know why? First off, you get higher capacity than .40 or .45, less recoil/muzzle flip, and thirdly, bullet technology has advanced to the point where an expanded 9mm and .45 of the same brand will be equally effective. Did I mention I love .45 ACP? I carry a G21, because up until the FNX 45, it had the highest capacity for a .45 ACP. I carry it full of 185gr +P Gold Dots pushing 1200fps, which is impressive until I bring out the 10mm G20 or the .460 Rowland conversion. It is wonderful to shoot, though most full size .45s are, but you still only have 13 +1 capacity. I have an Auto Ordnance 1911A1 Commemorative, it's nice enough for a $550 1911, haven't had any issues with it and it shoots 230gr ball with stupid accuracy. Haven't cycled anything else through it. I would never carry it because the capacity is insufficient, there are too many safeties, and it has a hair trigger. 1911s are notoriously finicky with hollow points, mine won't feed Hornaday ZMAX/Critical Defense because of the bullet taper and angle of the feed ramp. I'm going to switch to the CZ P09, because 19+1 in the same size, lighter weight gun sounds better to me. Carry a spare mag or two? You'd have 40-60rds at your disposal, which will be plenty unless you're laying down covering fire against jihadi assholes in a a movie theater, mall or french street market. Getting the idea? 9mm is still cheaper than the same amount of .45 ACP every time I've looked, and it is a shame, because I love shooting fat, slow, 230gr ball at steel targets.
for ammo commonality I go .40 s&w. it seems to be the most popular round in the area
Can anyone recommend a good online place or if you have experience in Pennsylvania a gun store to get a nicely built pistol, preferably .45, under $500? I want it to be durable, but obviously not weigh a ton as I'll be carrying it most of the time. I've never actually bought a gun, so I'm not exactly sure what I should be looking for in a handgun, but I'm about to get my concealed carry permit. Any suggestions?
