It says mine was either 1994 or 1977. That seems right. I remember reading up on how the years repeat eventually but I've forgotten since then.

The full list is on the bottom of that page. For the letters, I use the letters that come before the serial numbers, right?

So I have a XM-15 Bushmaster AR, N-star scope and red dot, with a flash light mounted/Laser sight, mag pull stock, railed guard, fore grip. Few mags and a case.
Guy offered me a Magnum Research Desert Eagle Mk19, should I trade? I always thought a Desert Eagle be a cool gun to own, but like. What would I use it for? I know 50 caliber is not cheap to shoot and I dunno, I feel like it would be more of a "HEY LOOK WHAT I GOT" Instead of something I can go out and shoot down at the range. Any tips?

Considering how much the AR market has tanked since the scare you could do the trade, sell the desert eagle for $700-900, and get yourself a nicer AR.

Bushmasters are still retailing new for about that much. Plus all the accessories.
Got my shotguns out a couple of days ago:

So while doing research on gun legislation in CT I found a video of somebody from my university talking about how she organizes empty holster protests. This video is from years ago and the marksmanship club she was part of is no longer on campus. I'm thinking of walking around campus from now on with my empty pistol holster on my hip. The reason for the protest is that our campus doesn't allow conceal carry like some other universities do, guns are strictly forbidden.

The way the sight post and ejector rod compartment are arranged makes the barrel look bent :v:

Good luck with that if you're in CT, that state has nothing but contempt for firearms and is trying it's damndest to re-write the constitution with the help of their lord and savior, Dannel Malloy.
Open carry protests are a great idea, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather not "out" myself in a state like CT and in a place like a college campus full of "educated and open minded" ignorant people that think guns are bad and gun owners are the devil.
I left MA, so I know what living behind enemy lines is like.
after reading a little more about the finboy M39 nagants, i went ahead and bought one from classic
turns out they sold every rifle of their second shipment of m39's in approximately 60 minutes from the time they went up for sale and i managed to get my ticket for one before some other asshole bought 10 of them

Yeah the gun laws are pretty bullshit but we still have open carry and CCW classes and shit. It's not like I could get in legal trouble just for carrying around an empty holster.

You are correct, but that wasn't my point; what I meant was that IMO, college students, professors, especially in the northeast aren't firearms friendly and are more apt to verbally defecate on you than engage you in a meaningful debate
That and I don't like telling those sorts of people that I'm into guns if I have to work with them for the remainder of the semester/year.

Eh, I guess it has to deal with what part of the country you're in. Here in MN Used base model bushmasters go around 5-600 dollars.

Yeah, I second this. As much as I wish I could go around talking about my hobbies I live in NY and like 90% of people are scared absolutely shitless of guns. Like, so much so they have panic attacks and start crying when they see them. No shit, true story. Off-Duty cop was admitted to the hospital my Sister works at and when he told the Nurse he had his gun on him she had a panic attack and started hysterically crying. Afterwards they asked her why she reacted that way and it wasn't like she had a traumatic experience or anything, she had just never seen a gun before, didn't like them and thought the fact this off duty officer had one on him was like the scariest thing in the world to her at that moment.
Telling the wrong person you have guns, much less a CCW is asking for trouble. I remember waiting for the store to close at my old job and all my co-workers were literally standing in a circle shit talking some old co-worker I had never met purely because he got a CCW and that made him a coward/scary or some shit. He got it for his new job apparently. Crazy shit like five minutes of them going around in a circle acting like he was going to come back and shoot anyone who ever disagreed with him.
I have much pity for you. Maybe one day you can come visit the land of the free and see whats its like. I used to work at a best buy and one day some xX~TaCtiCoOl OpErAtOr~Xx walked through the store for a while wearing black cargo pants, a long sleeve black turtleneck, and 4 handguns on 2 hip holsters and 2 shoulder holsters, and the most that happened was a few chuckles and "haha what a sperg"s.
A few months ago there were a couple scrawny redneck teens who felt it was there civil duty and right to stand guard outside the military recruiting station with their ARs. I went past them once, they were pretty friendly and polite, but eventually someone told the news and there was a story on them and they got pressured into leaving the ARs at home, or at least in the truck. They still hung out at the doors for a while after that, no doubt with CCWs.
Ignoring the cheap Chinese red dot onto of it.

It's funny you mentioned Best Buy because that's the business I used to work for in that story.
I thought about moving to PA but aside the dumb as fuck gun laws I'm okay with NY and the area of PA I wanted to move too has like no jobs. I'd have to commute back into NY everyday to work which defeats the purpose of moving. I'd lose my NY Resident Pistol Permit if I moved too which I'd like to keep.

I just got to shoot mine over the weekend. It turns out it's missing the cleaning rod retainer nut, so the cleaning rod tried to escape, but it's more accurate than I am and cycles smoothly so otherwise it's great. Be sure to follow standard cosmoline removal procedures before you use it, they've got a bunch of the crap in the workings.
Son of a bitch
Some dumb asshole kid just went and shot the principal of a local high school in the arm. Hes in custody and the dudes just got a hole in his arm, so could have been worse, but i really hope this doesnt attract gun activists and price gouging on guns and ammo.
[editline]30th September 2015[/editline]
And of course the news banner on tv doesnt mention that everybody is still alive, i smell classic fearmongering.
For learning to reload, is getting a few manuals and watching some videos sufficient for that? I was told that it takes months of instruction from an already experienced reloader and that videos and manuals would be the death of me.
I can smell a hint of bullshit on that, but nearly everyone I know says the same thing. Keep in mind this isn't handloading custom ammo, this is reloading spent cases to factory specs if possible.
If that is the case, then how do people ever get into reloading without "blowing themselves to kingdom come" as unless you're in a club, finding a reloader willing and able to spend that much time showing you what to do is gonna be nearly impossible unless you already know one or two.
To me it's combination of manuals, videos, and some instruction. You can get some ideas of how reloading is if you watch some videos from Iraqiveteran8888 or Fortunecookie45LC. FortuneCookie45LC deals mostly with revolvers but has been doing a .223 series for his rifle.
Do research on what cartridge you are reloading and from what gun you are going to use it from. Manuals help a lot here. The instruction/training is so you don't learn the hard way of having a gun go kaboom, or if you are going into competition shooting where the most minute detail can make group go from 1/4MOA to 1/2MOA.
I am reloading to factory specs right now, so I don't have as much to worry as much about overall lengths or excessive charges.
Of all the tools you will need for reloading these are the most important for safely reloading: a set of calipers, a bullet pulling hammer, a reliable scale, safety glasses and loads of patience.
Oh boy, let it begin:

You've got to be realistic about it. SVDs aren't AR's, it all requires custom tooling and equipment. Coming from a small outfit that's the price you pay, because unlike larger manufacturers who can afford to run at a deficit for a while small shops usually can't.
Not to mention it's probably going to be much higher in quality and craftsmanship then something from say century arms.

You can make a stamped steel receiver in any machine shop.
If they come down in price, my attitude will change, but with some things they never actually come down in price. I know a ton of people want American SVDs. Hopefully this company will get off the ground, and do awesome things. Until then I'll stick around and wait.
why on earth would it be in .308?
buy a vepr instead
If you look through the FB comments MAC made, they'll go that way first because there is more quality .308 match ammo available than 7.62x54r
"Match ammo for 54R is not common, nor inexpensive, nor does it perform anywhere near what match .308 can do. Cheap 54R is coming to an end very quickly. In 5 years you'll have a rifle that uses horribly expensive ammo that's not even match quality. If you're content making loud noises and shooting 4" groups with your rifle, then a 54R SVD would be ideal. I would rather get a Mosin for that, personally. Me, I like the .308 option because of the wide variety of domestically produced match ammo.
The builder claims sub-MOA which is one reason .308 is being used.
The goal is to start with .308 because it's the most accurate and match ammo is readily available but possibly doing a 54R down the road.
54R sucks for match ammo, most of it that's imported is corrosive and contrary to popular belief, supplies are drying up. You're cheap ammo will be cheap for another 5 years then it will be hard to find and expensive because no one produces it domestically."
Basically, if you take into account how much you'd pay for a sub MOA .308 semi auto, it's probably near or above $2500.
M14 EBR in SAGE Chassis with quality optics and ammo is already over $2500
SCAR H is $2500 before optics or match trigger
SR-25/M110 build is north of $2500
MR762A1 LRP Way over $2500
LWRC REPR $4K without optics
You get the point.

At that point you're stepping even further away from the original design than just the caliber change., since the real thing is milled. You also have to take into consideration the special tooling involved with making the internals. Theres almost no parts commonality between an SVD and an AK, so unlike a PSL you can't just go to tapco and get your tigger or gas piston.
When your next option is an ruskie or Chinese SVD for $5,000 plus the 2500 doesn't sound so bad, and if you're getting 1 MOA or better that price practically pays for itself in terms of savings vs trying to accurize it yourself.
