Separates powder and projectile(s) in a shotgun shell. Once fiber, now usually plastic. It can put a pretty big hole of its own in closeby targets.
That was my intention anyway - I don't want to abuse it much, it's just a range toy really. I was more curious about any reliability problems or quirks. I heard they can have some extraction problems that are a pain in the ass to fix, but I don't know how exaggerated the frequency of such problems is.
Well, since it has a single bar to work the action, it's common failure point. So if you get a stuck shell, just be careful when forcing it open. Check the shotgun for a bent op-rod. The shotgun also came in a take-down version, so check and see if its that version.
It's has a lot of machine work inside the receiver, so check that for rust if possible. If you took a field stripped 870 and compared it to the 10, you can see why the 10 was discontinued.
Otherwise, standard affair for buying used. Check for rust, boogered screws, ect.

If practicality and reliability is your concern just buy a new shotgun.

I fingred a SP01 over at money mizers today. Gonna go with the SP01 for my carry gun.

I believe he was asking a rhetorical question, meant to imply that the wad contains the shot and would prevent the steel from scratching the barrel as described, since it's not raw steel-on-steel.
The real risk is bulging the end of the barrel, since the steel of the old barrel isn't hard enough and could deform when steel shot hits the fixed choke at the end of the barrel.

Alright, that kind of stuff is what I was looking for. Externally it looks pretty good but I'll be sure to give it a good inspection before I buy it. I also plan to test fire it that day, and I'm buying from a reputable gun store with a test-and-return policy so hopefully they honor that if the gun's a bust.

If practicality was a concern I wouldn't be looking at an 85 year old shotgun. I do however want it to work and if it has any common quirks that cause it to not work then I want to know about those. I like antique guns as guns, not as wall hangers.

Oh. :v: I wasn't sure if he was serious or not. I'll be sure to check the choke just in case but I plan on putting lead through it one way or another. I'm hoping it's a military model - it's obviously not a trench gun since it doesn't have the lug or heat shield, but it might still be a practice or riot gun. Odds are it's just somebody's grandpa's gun but I'm excited to pick it up either way.
Went to a gun range for the first time for my birthday. Rented a Glock 17, Beretta M9, Desert Eagle 1911, FNH FNX-45, and a Kriss Vector SDP.

eh the small slide on the sp01 was the drawback from making it conceal carry for me
unless you mean open carry

I don't understand how thin slide would be an issue for cc?
I'm also not a huge ass hole so I don't plan to open carry unless I'm hunting or hiking.

Racking the slide can be a bit tricky if you're used to larger beefier slides. I noticed a difference right away between my Sig and my CZ. I love them both don't get me wrong. But as long as you CC in Condition 1, that won't be an issue.

I'm not a sissy little girl with itty bitty baby hands, and I'm not a fat fuck with pudgy fatass fingers, so racking a marginally smaller slide is a non-issue for me. Anyone who cc's without a round in the chamber is a dumbass anyways.
CCing without a round in the chamber shouldn't be a problem with a quality holster.
Remember how I said there was a bill going through the NH House that lets us carry a concealed firearm without a permit?
Yeah, the Governor's gonna veto it if it reaches her desk.
Dammit, why did I vote for her?

Also I'm going to a gun show this coming weekend. Might post some pics.

No need to be an asshole because people differ in opinion from you.
People carry without one in the chamber, is it dangerous, yeah, it really can be, some can argue that having one in the chamber is dangerous as well, and I have personal experience with that danger (due to a leather holster) but there isn't a need for you to be so up in arms (ha ha) over something like that.
You carry with one in the chamber, good for you, so do I and a lot of other people, you also have people that carry without one in the chamber, it's their choice.
Also on your "sissy little girl and fat fuck hands" comment, I have spider like hands, they're long and very thin, with a very wide palm, I have some trouble racking slides on compact and semi-compact pistols if there aren't any cocking serrations, so what category of fat or sissy do I fall into?

Again this is why gun culture is becoming really unpleasant
Have some fucking respect for each other, it's not a dick measuring contest
He's out doing Pruss at this rate.
Anyway, anyone here tried a Ruger M77 action out? I'm looking at getting one of the scout rifles as my one and only bolt gun. I like the mags and getting irons on a new manufacture bolt rifle. Generally, I dislike bolt actions, but I figure I want to have one of each of the major action types.

Overdosing on testosterone won't make your own micropenis go away y'know
Anyways, my dad's Ithaca 37 has this weird issue where if you pump too fast, the front of the shell gets caught on the lip of the chamber, and sometimes drops all the shells straight out of the tube when you rack it. Are these common problems or should we get rid of it

Have you looked it up on google or visited an Ithaca forum? Should be a simple fix. Sounds like something is worn out or a simple polish job. When was it made?
Here's something related:

nice lol
Hit a speed bump with my pistol permit today. Went to go hand in all my paperwork and it turns out my handgun safety course expired so I gotta retake it. But thankfully I got a hold of the guy who did it and he was really really nice and is gonna let me show up for a class this Friday and isn't gonna charge even a fraction of the original cost.
Aside from that my final interview is next month. I gotta hand in the certificate next week too.

My hands are big enough that I can just about fit my full-size CZ-75 in my palm. That tiny slide makes cycling the slide overhand significantly more difficult, since I need to pinch the slide serrations rather than just grab the whole thing. It's easier to slingshot the slide, which is not how I was trained and feels very insecure. It's my only complaint about the gun.
Expired? I used 3-year old paperwork to show that I passed my course here in Canada. Getting a handgun permit in New York seems to be more of a pain in the ass than here.
Fucking USPS lost my mosin mount. Ordered it 10 days ago. The last tracking info says it was picked up on the 5th. I had USPS start an investigation, they called me right back and told me they never picked it up. I emailed the seller and they said they did give it to USPS, and it might still show up eventually, but refunded me anyway. I really want it so I can go shooting this weekend, so I dont know if I should buy it again from another seller, or wait and see if it shows up.
Fuck usps
Order a replacement, if the first one shows up, send it back to the seller. He was kind enough to refund you, so it's the honest thing to do.

Was this some guy off armslist or was this a transaction from an actual store like Buds or J&G?

I'm not Paul Bunyan so I don't have an issue handling my USP or a CZ pistol. My only complaint about my USP isn't it's size, it's the fact it has a polymer frame. Polymer frame+.40 isn't a real good combo imo.
My only complaint with USP's is the damn mag release.

I love it, easier to use your trigger finger to drop the mag than your thumb.
