I'm not saying my dinky little indie movies are going to use blank-firing weapons. Indeed, my friends and I are planning on doing a movie in a year or two and will be using deactivated airsoft weapons as props. That being said, working on big-budgeted movies where they do use blank-firing weapons is something I'd be interested in doing, hence my interest in taking lessons.
Deactivated airsoft weapons? .... why would you pay extra for a broken toy?
They're rentals, not full purchases. Actually now that I think about it, I don't they're deactivated. Wouldn't make much sense to rent weapons for movies that don't actually look like they're firing. Dunno why I said they were deactivated.
I just don't get it, do what Freddiew does and just buy airsoft guns?
Buying over renting is likely to be more expensive. I do need to get an estimate from the rental place though, so it's not like we're dead set on renting. If it turns out buying would be cheaper because of how many days we'd need large quantities of props, we'd go ahead with buying over renting. Whereas Freddiew makes things often enough that he has his own collection, this is a one off thing unless we get popular enough to do it often. Again, we haven't weighed the pricing yet, I only emailed the rental house today. [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] Also, a lot of the crew tends to be anal about this kind of thing, it's just how they are. Without going too much into rant territory, unless an idea is flashing a great big THIS IS THE BETTER OPTION YOU NITWITS sign in front of their faces, they find it difficult to see past what their initial idea was. Then again, I'm the art director so it's my jurisdiction, and cheaper is better when you're getting the same thing.
The 590A1 is the Cadillac of Mossberg shotguns, but I wouldn't really care for the mariner model on account of the finish. It's not threaded for chokes either obviously, though the barrel is 20" instead of 18" and 8+1 is about the best capacity available in traditional 12GA pump guns. [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] Not that capacity is always a concern. Sometimes I wish I could swap out for a shorter magazine tube because I feel like it would point better.
I meant safety courses, but that's a good point you made there. [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] I suppose a good place to start would be to familiarize myself with safety courses though, right? :v: [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] Sorry if I seem to be harping on this a lot, it's just something I find interesting, and work in a field that interests you is usually a good thing, no? It's just I don't exactly have a massive clue on where to start.
Look, being an armorer, or even a movie armorer that specializes in deactivated and blank firing firearms isn't something you just "get into". It's something you have to study extensively for and have actual college degrees and gunsmithing certifications for. It's not something you can read a wikipedia page for and expect to be qualified for it. If you're wanting to use firearms in a indie film, give up. Do like everyone else does and buy some cheap gas powered airsoft guns and a can of spray paint.
yeah, but the only mossbergs i find are the 590A1 mariner and 88, as well as the 935
I am assuming that special ordering a mossberg 500 would be justification for your shops to charge you more for a $400-$500 dollar shotgun.
It really depends on the shop. If they have a line on distributors (which most any shop should), it doesn't cost them anything more. Sometimes, there'll be a transfer fee, which varies from business to business.
I turn 21 in 2 months, so I can't buy a handgun yet, but I think I'm gonna get my concealed carry and a phoenix arms hp22a and an extre 5 inch barrel. Yes, I know its a good for nothing gutless cheaply made Saturday night special. I dont care. I think its cute. And from what I can tell, its a pretty good plinker with the 5 inch barrel.
I would never carry a .22 as my primary pistol for personal protection, especially not one that holds only 10 rounds. .22 jams a LOT, especially with defensive ammo, they have no stopping power, and most people wearing even slightly thicker clothes probably won't even actually get hit.
Don't carry something chambered in .22LR for concealed carry. Moreover, don't carry a single action crap gun for concealed carry. That gun both won't stop someone, and is likely a safety hazard.

To get one, you need to take a course, take a test, and send paperwork and money to the government. To handle pistols, it's another course and test and more money and paperwork. Since you mentioned the ETF that leads me to believe you're in Toronto. A good place to check out for getting your gun license would be yrfirearms.com or firearmscourses.ca for Ontario. If you want to become an armourer, getting your gun license is the first place you have to start. Also watch out with those airsoft guns that you don't get the cops called on you.
Jeez guys, I said I know its a gutless piece of dog shit gun with no stopping power. I also said it would be a plinker. I'm getting my concealed carry as a matter of convenience. In SD all it takes is going to the sherrifs office, filling out a form, tossing them 10 bucks or so, and waiting a few weeks. If I start carrying a gun for defense, I'll get a bodyguard .380 or something.

Damn. You get shit for value. Now I see why you praise the CZ's all the time.

Another guy angry about my comments on the ISSF videos were people are using $1,000+ .22 rifles at only 50m. The guy tried to say that "Hur if you're good at ISSF it's because it's all about accuracy and breathing and if you can do that then you can pick up any weapon in the world and use it no problem, I'm a 50m rifle shooter and just recently got a .338 and fired it at 1,000 yards without any previous training on it" Alrighty Mr. A .22 is the same weight, size, and velocity as a .338 and 50m is the same as 1,000 yards.
anyone got any experience with the sxp defender? kinda want one, only thing killing it is the can't-change-choke deal which is pretty sucky. i get its use and all (buckshot and slugs) but it'd be nice being able to shoot birdshot in it too. i'd buy an 870 but having handled and shot my friend's one countless of times i just plain don't want one anymore
You really don't want a shotgun for home defense, unless you fancy the idea of replacing whatever was behind the home invader, redoing the drywall behind him and probably in the next room over, and cleaning up after shooting someone within 15 feet with buckshot. Use a handgun. I keep a baretta nano and a ruger gp100 in my bedside table. Those are my go-to for a home invasion scenario.
Help. I was shooting my 1897 and I noticed it failed to extract. When I went to cycle the action, it locked up, but I could hear something rattling around. Turns out, the RIGHT extractor came loose and is no longer retained. Does it use a spring? What retains it, a pin? Can anyone help me? That being said I'd be more comfortable with pistol cartridges than rifle cartridges in the case of over-penetration. As far as drywall penetration goes, most rounds go thru the same amount. http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-144635.html Search "8 Sheets" and read the post by cesiumsponge. Both 9mm and 5.56x45 penetrated 8 sheets of drywall. .45 is the best all around choice as it has the lowest number of penetrated sheets while also being an effective round (7 sheets of drywall penetration, vs .22LR's 6 but .22LR isn't going to be as good as a round for home defense) That being said I'd rather go with a pistol than a rifle or shotgun. Easier to pull out while half asleep, smaller and more maneuverable, and easier to aim (in my opinion anyway)
I would rather the person invading my home be dead in one shot vs multiple shots that I might miss in a panic shooting situation. I have a Steyr L9-A1 and a remington 870, I would rather use the 870 with 3" 000 buckshot than my Steyr 9mm if someone broke into my home, odds are I'm going to be sued anyways for shooting someones precious angel that was turning their life around, so what difference does it make if I scruff up the dry wall?
i want a 10/22 too but it'll go from a 300 dollar rifle to a 1000 dollar project with the stock, trigger, barrel, scope, suppressor i want
I'm ricing up a 10/22 right now, and pretty much just sitting here praying it all comes together well while I wait for the parts to arrive.
Your first mistake was thinking that PrusseLusken is ever talking about self defense.
He's new to the thread, let him be. He'll soon realize that Prusse never talks practical to us and is only worried about hitting the dot in the center of the target at threehundred yards with both eyes closed every time and doesn't know what self-defense is in our minds.
Well, let's be fair. Self defense isn't a concern for everyone and it doesn't need to be. In some cases it's not even something that's legally considerable. People who only concern themselves with self defense are probably getting far less out of the hobby than the dedicated target shooters and hunters. A lot of us cross into all three realms but that doesn't mean all of us have to.
True. But arguing against Prusse for self-defense mentality isn't going to get anywhere, just like arguing against Trunk that 1911s are good isn't going to get anywhere.
