I understood the reasoning, his wording was from the mindset of a consumer not a company.
That being said, it's not a very GOOD reason. Mossberg's MVP line of rifles take AR magazines. KelTec's SU series of rifles take AR magazines. The SCAR16s, the Tavor, the ARX-160, the FS2000, etc. Lots of rifles take AR mags because it's STANAG. Also IIRC H&K will be releasing a magwell accessory that'll let their new HK293 take AR mags.
It would have been nice if the mini 14 accepted stanag magazines, but the Mini 14 magazines are at least very high quality. You can also get tapco polymer magazines, which is much cheaper and still reliable.

That's a sexy goddamn vepr
Okay. Here's the deal. Sunday, I went to qualify with the M16A2 with a bunch of other guys from my unit. I sucked hard, got 27 out of 40.
I was planning on getting a Mosin Nagant variant, but I'm thinking I might just drop some extra money on an AR15 of some sort so I can enjoy a day at the range and build up my proficiency at the same time. I don't want an ultra-tacticool, high-speed pseudo-special forces monstrosity, just something that's close to a service rifle and that I can add optics to if I ever transfer to a unit that uses those on weapons.
I'm thinking something along the lines of a Colt AR15A4:
[t]http://fidelisfirearms.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Colt-AR-15A4-rifle-5447-stock-photos-003b.jpg[/t]
Anyone have any suggestions, gripes, bitches or complaints?
I take it you're a reservist or something and don't get issued optics?
Take whatever matches the sights of the M16A2 and has a similar barrel length.

Yeah, I'm a national guardsman in a transportation unit. We're a bunch of pogs, and our equipment reflects this.
As for the weapon, yeah, the A4 should be a pretty close match. It's the civilian version of the M16A4, which is pretty much an A2 that hasn't been worn down with years of service and has a detachable carry handle/rear sight like the M4. Of course the USGI version has an RIF mounted in place, while the civvie version just uses A2 handguards. Something to do with the RIF in question being manufactured by one of Colt's competitors, from what I hear.
I was just wondering if anyone had any bad experiences with this particular weapon, or had a better alternative. Honestly I'd prefer something closer to an M4 ('cause 1, that's what I qualified with in basic and 2 most everyone except pogs who get deployed once every 10 years uses 'em), but Colt doesn't seem to have anything nearly as close to USGI as the AR15A4.
I've heard Colt are good quality, but they're awfully expensive for that level of quality.
I've heard Colt are good quality, but they're awfully expensive for that level of quality.
The AR15A4 is priced at $999.
Is that a reasonable price, or overly expensive?
Mid range price.
This... doesn't answer my question at all.
No it completely answers your question.
Ruger is not in the firerarms market to please consumers, they are in the market to make loads of money off loyal fudds. Its more economical for Ruger to charge 80$ for a proprietary magazine than it is for them to make it compatable with an already standardized magazine.
Furthermore for the mini to take stanags it would require redesigning. The mini14 is, very very loosely, a downscaled m14, and m14s use rock and lock mags, nothing like an AR magwell. Its supposed to be a M14 but downscaled to 556/223.

All the rifles you mentioned, hold for the mossberg and keltec, are all military style or military geared rifles. It makes sense for them to use stanags because theyrr not expressly designed for the consumer market.
Keltec doesnt use proprietary mags because theyre not a completely shit company, and mossberg doesnt because theyre not shit either.
Ruger is a shit company. The firearms equivalent of Stalin.
So about mini 14's not being able to take stanags....

Seems to me like you just need a simple conversion.... well semi simple.
And yes ruger is past their hay day but they're not the worst company.
that's not an ar mag??
That's totally a black stanag, and there's other examples on google. I really didn't realize that mini 14's weren't known for being converted to stanag.

please god dont buy an m16 for practical use
i understand youre a nasty girl but that old ass piece of shit m16 is going to get deserviced in your near future and you are going to get a 14.5 inch barrel M4 at some point. Trust me i know this because i had an m16a2 issued to me in 2012 and it got replaced not a year later. i dont even understand why you guys are even issued those rifles, you guys are more realistically prone to deploying within the US in urban enviroments than we are and 20 inch barrel rifles are not ideal in those situations. Get yourself a 16 inch barrel rifle with a collapsible stock and an m16a2 sight kit and plenty of ammo instead of dropping fuckin 1000 dollars
brass 5.56 ammo isnt cheap
Gotta get me one of those 16" .308 ARs
just be aware that a civilian rifle will feel different than the mil one. much less worn and overcleaned, trigger will most likely be heaps better, and it will be more accurate
AS someone unfamiliar with the military, do they pretty much just issue out shitty used clunker rifles to everyone?

Looks like a factory 30 rounder to me. I could be wrong, but I'm with Prusse on this one.

Not always, but there's a chance you'll get an older rifle. I believe rack grade service rifles are expected to be 3-4 MOA. A rifle like he posted will probably shoot 1.5 MOA, better with good ammo.

I think the pic I posted was wrong after some investigation, but there's definitely some people who've modded their mini 14's for stanag

Train as you fight, bro.
But yeah, I'd be much happier with an M4-styled weapon. Something as close to the issued weapon as is legally and practically possible (obviously I don't need a burst or automatic function, we never use that shit anyway). I'm hitting up Rock River right now to see what they've got. I'm open to suggestions. I just really wish the AR-15 market weren't so flooded with bullshit.
This is my long-term plan of course. My main focus right now is getting an M44 carbine and setting up an IRA fund by the end of the summer.
of course it's not a fucking GI mag. look at the curve and the shape of the sides, it has a thinner front part than the AR mags do
Yea I realized that and corrected myself my man, but my point still stands, there are conversions to standard STANAG
Yea I realized that and corrected myself my man, but my point still stands, there are conversions to standard STANAG
There really aren't. I've seen posts on obscure forums dating to the mid 2000s claiming their friend's buddy's grandmother's dog's part-time caretaker's cousin's friend had their gunsmith do the conversion, but never any hard proof of it.

im telling you bro, dont qualify on crew served weapons unless youre deploying
you think that shit is a game and then they issue you that heavy bitch and youre carrying a fuckin 50 cal or a 240B everywhere
So I'm seriously debating quitting my job at the outdoors store, and if I do, that means no 1911-380, or any guns for that matter, for a while.

Notice the mag catch lever on the back? The Mini 14 uses the same locking mechanism as the M1A. AR mags catch with a hole on the left side of the mag body.
STANAG 4179 was never approved, it's just a draft
Doesn't change the fact that its still the standard for any gun in 5.56 in 2015. Doesn't matter if it's official on paper or not.

Dood that is not a Stanag. Like I said in my previous post, Mini-14's use rock and lock mags, theres no way to make an AR mag work with a mini14 hold for grinding out a notch and welding on a block to the mag, but at that point it's not an AR mag.

Theres also definitely some people who have made AKM's out of shovels and converted AKM's into muzzle loaders, but thats obviously not the norm. Mini-14's don't take stanags, can't take stanags, shouldn't take stanags, and ruger will never let them take stanags. If that happens, then Ruger loses a big chunk of their market for mini-14's; how else are they going to sell $80 magazines with a straight face?
Their revolvers are god tier.
Not debating the quality of their fudguns, just saying their company is garbage and their consumer market is hilariously overpriced and they know they're overcharging people out the ass. They hold a monopoly over their own market and they should be ashamed of it.
Chall think it's possible to cast my own 1911 part by part if I replace the liquid aluminum with liquid steel in this video?
