It doesn't show much of the war romanticized. Patton is portrayed as a man who romanticized war and the glory of battle though who also believed he was a reincarnated warrior (which he did) so take it as you will. If it sounds too romanticized for you, leave it out.
Hey where's Men in Black 3?
I actually haven't seen that one yet, but it's on my to do list.
So what are the good war movies? I'm thinking of the stuff that doesn't suffer form the "good war" syndrome or otherwise overly romanticizes war (or any one side of the conflict). Like, not Saving Private Ryan?
Pretty much any Vietnam War movie. Platoon Apocalypse Now Full Metal Jacket
I think what he should do is watch Letters from Iwo Jima first. It gives you the often unportrayed Japanese perspective of the battle, while most of the material on it focuses on the "America being badass and did such a good job and sacrificed so much" approach. It also forces the viewer to rely on facial expressions/tone of voices of the actors rather than the words themselves since most of it is in Japanese (subtitles obv). Lastly it really doesn't really focus on the battle so much as the relationship between the Japanese soldiers and the vastly different customs of Japan compared to the usual American standpoints. Also, it's a gorgeous movie, of course.
Forgot about Letters from Iwo Jima. Fuck, what is wrong with me?
loved the grenade suicide bit

It has some battle scenes sure but its focus is on the relationship between the two conscripted brothers in the Korean War. There's not a lot of stuff on 'soldiery' because nearly everyone is unwillingly conscripted. You get a lot of insight of the relationships and customs of the korean people. Plus you are never fed propaganda. Neither side seems particularly nice and in some instances, the south seems just as bad as the North.
Can I get a movie something similar to the Spirit? I loved the visual effects and the style of the movie as a whole. I'm not really looking fora particularly great story or any of that (even though that's a plus) so much as I am mood and visual style.

In fact, I think you'll like it a lot if you haven't seen it already. '300' is pretty stylish and has a distinctive vision So did 'Watchmen' Maybe the Burton 'Batman' films?
I'ce actually seen them all except Sin City but I've heard great things about it I'll be sure to check it out, thanks!
Oh phew because Sin City was my main recommendation. Stuck others on the list because I didn't want to look an idiot if you've already seen it.
While I'm still here, some good time travel movies would be great The more complicated and confusing the better
time travel you say? only ones i can think of at the moment are primer time bandits donnie darko (it kind of involves time travel) aaand that's all i've got on me.
While I'm still here, some good time travel movies would be great The more complicated and confusing the better
Well, you could check out these: Back to the Future 12 Monkeys The Butterfly Effect The Time Machine The Jacket Primer The Terminator Looper Men in Black 3 Source Code Donnie Darko Frequency Star Trek: First Contact (if you dont like star trek tng or the tng movies in general, you can skip this one) Groundhog Day (not complicated or whatever, but it's still good)
Buckaroo Bonzai, mate. Kind of.
There's so many time travel movies that have bleak, horrific settings.
Anyone got a good thriller to suggest? Probably somethign with scifi, serial killers, or something along those lines, not supernatural beings unless it is really good. Also something with traps, kinda like in Saw. Also if anyone remembers the name of this movie, there were a bunch of people locked in a room all chained up, they were wondering who was doing that and what was the connection between all of them.
Is that movie 'Nine Dead'?
Yes, thanks.
Is that movie 'Nine Dead'? [editline]7th May 2013[/editline] Some good thriller + scifi/thriller movies I remember right now (bad memory so sorry if list is short) Mystic River Se7en Cube Cypher Memento Vertigo Rear Window The Silence of the Lambs Red Dragon Manhunter 'Cape Fear' is pretty good but I can't watch it without laughing because of The Simpsons Minority Report Dark City
Also something with traps, kinda like in Saw.
Yeah, I think you'll like 'Cube' if you haven't seen it already
While I'm still here, some good time travel movies would be great The more complicated and confusing the better
Heres a real shot in the dark. Try out 'Somewhere in Time' starring Chris reeve and Jane seymour. A bit hammy but a great watch. A guilty pleasure but one I feel the need to share.

Same thing for 'The Time Traveller's Wife'. Still if you like time travel, romance and Christopher Reeve himself, this movie would be worth watching. Also for some reason, a bunch of Asian mothers/aging ladies I know really like that film.

It's about a 14 year-old kid who joins the war and finds out it's not that fun.
come and see is ridiculously good... does make you lose your loaf though
On the topic of time travewl films the fantastic 'Timecrimes' from Spain was a wonderful film. The layers of possibilities from time travel are used to maximum effect in a very simple way. I love this film.

I watched an interesting Russian film called "Dad" which focused on a violin player and his relationship with his father up to the War. I would recommend that. Full Metal Jacket could also fit into this I guess. Come and see seems interesting, bit brutal with all the torching. I might watch that later.
'Cross of Iron' is worth a watch too 'Ivan's Childhood' too if you like Tarkovsky

Maybe "The Longest Day" Though I think I'm recommending good war films, rather than what you're looking for.
Though I think I'm recommending good war films
-Letters from Iwo Jima -All Quiet on the Western Front -Full Metal Jacket -Enemy at the Gates -Stalingrad -Winter War -Hamburger Hill I loved a Bridge too far, it's a classic movie that glorifies the events of Market Garden and strays from history.
I need some melancholic bukowski-esque stuff
I need some melancholic bukowski-esque stuff
Blue Valentine with Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams is pretty down to earth, working class, kicked in the head material. At first I read 'Bukakke' from your post but a double take confirmed otherwise.
