Yeah, especially since [sp]she's the most reasonable character in the entire story.[/sp]
You just don't meet folk like that these days, there's nothing compromising about her character. She's just up front with everything she dealt with and natural too. The co-actors were swell too but she really stole the show.
I love that film.. It's hilarious but at the same time so fucking heartfelt.
World's Greatest Dad, Happiness, Sexy Beast and my personal favourite Survive Style 5+
all great underrated dark comedy films, although rusty thinks World's Greatest Dad is the most depressing film I think it's such an affirmation that dark comedy works.

yes, the way the police woman acts so damn cheerful all the way through, her quirkiness alone makes the film worth seeing.
her character just threw me totally off the entire plot :)
Hell yeah, Marge Gunderson is awesome
Bernie is a black comedy but not so much that it's really jokey but more that the situation is just really odd. I don't know if it'd fit your criteria but I may as well try.
[editline]30th November 2013[/editline]
It also has Jack Black's best acting, ever
Jack Black was immense as him
I watched some interviews afterwards where JB was studying the actual Bernie Thiede, and he got it spot on
First Knight. Extremely deep, historically accurate and absorbing. Let us all know how you got on.
Finally had time to watch just 1 movie, and I chose King Arthur. I fell asleep half way through but I blame that on muscle relaxants.
anyway I made a list of all the recommendations from here so I'll get through them eventually :v:
i'm just looking for a really good film of any genre that i haven't seen
i don't know if having such a broad request makes providing recommendations easier or harder, it should be easier
[editline]6th December 2013[/editline]
so basically it would be great if someone could create an erratic list of good movies of varying genres

Well, without any specific conditions or genres to go by, you might just want to check out IMDB's top list. Pretty much all the movies up there are good.
the problem with lists like that is that i've seen every movie for the top 40-50. also some of them are ranked high for their achievements at the time they were released, and perhaps still hold decent merit, but i just don't see it. for example i didn't particularly think citizen kane was an amazing #1 quality movie. it was alright but not really one of the best that i've ever seen.

And District 9!
FUCK!
I'm slipping, man.
Wow you forgot Indiana Jones 4, Alien: Resurrection, Spiderman 3, Terminator 3, Godfather III, Iron Man 2, and TDKR
I almost put in Godfather III, since I did enjoy that one, but I'll admit, it has some shallow moments.

Godfather 3 wasn't bad, stylistically it was still a really nice Coppola film. The only aspect I would have improved was the casting, but even then I can't really knock them, they weren't really out of place but all in all, it was a third film that didn't actually reduce the ethics of the first two.
[editline]9th December 2013[/editline]
I actually really, really liked The Dark Knight Rises and wouldn't even think of comparing it to any of those movies.
I'm still on the fence with this one though..
Godfather 3 wasn't bad, stylistically it was still a really nice Coppola film. It was a decent film, although extremely different from previous two. The only thing hate-worthy was Sofia Copolla's acting, but hey, it was because of that film she started director's career, not actress'.
Yet, since I've found out what was the original story for third part, I started hating all that wasted potential.
Funny we bring up Godfather 3. It's massively underated. I agree with AK'z that the casting was a bit shaky in places such as Andy Garcia who on paper was right for the role at the time but in reality didn't carry the weight needed for such a part. Coppola's daughter should stick to directing.
Of the 3 films the finale in pt 3 was some of the finest stuff put to film and the feeling that all the fighting for power was just vanity when [sp]he loses his daughter and just fell of a chair and died alone at the end[/sp]. That gets me every time I see it.
pacino is terrific...
pacino is terrific...
[sp]That bit at the end of 3 where he lays back on the steps and roars in anguish is a work of art[/sp]. I wonder how many takes and ways of doing that they did.
One thing that I remembered was that many people I knew didn't like nor understand the whole papal subplot. From a point of trilogy it was a bit out of place, but it was a nice play on those conspiracy theories around John Paul I's death.
I knew about the JP I conspiracy thing, but the whole Vatican Bank scandal I never would have picked up on if I hadn't seen a particular episode of Dead Men's Secrets on the History Channel years before.
[editline]10th December 2013[/editline]
And I was under the impression that they only did one take for Pacino's [sp]scream of agony[/sp]. I'm not sure how much truth there is in this rumor, but allegedly there was no sound because it was too primal and horrifying to hear, which I very much doubt.
The only part of Godfather 3 that I've seen was the ending, and for what I saw, it was really well acted, especially Michael's scream and facial expressions on the stairs. I believed he was in pain and I didn't even completely know why. That's impressive.
Wasn't just me then.
Has anyone seen 'The American'? The ratings are not everything but the feedback is somewhat mixed. I seen a lot of shit films this week and could do with a surefire movie.
Don't watch the american it is slow and awful
My brother saw The American when it first came out and said it was boring as hell, but then again, that was before his movie tastes matured.
I've been meaning to see it myself, so good luck then.
I liked The American, there's something about it that makes it a solid character film. Not as good as Michael Clayton but different. Ebert compared it to La Samourai, but imo not as good but similar.

it's not something you'd watch while high on caffeine, it's more a night film.
I shall report back comrades.
Does anyone ever do a filmpunch end of year, vote your favourite films thread? This would be a good idea for someone who doesn't get shot on sight.
Does anyone know of any psychological thrillers / horrors that haven't really been noticed? (as I've seen most horror films on DVD, and online)
Jacob's Ladder
I dunno. Most horror films seem to have been noticed.
Any good movies about timetravel? Not just ones that have timetravel in them but where timetravel is a central element?
Seen primer and timecrimes, anything more like them?
[editline]13th December 2013[/editline]
