I don't know whether to classify this as Symphonic metal any more, or just refer to it as Symphonic Folk music or a soundtrack. But i just got a hold of Imaginaerum and it's close to being the single most outstanding musical experience in my life. (the other being Jethro Tull live) People are bashing and praising it, but i think it's outstanding.
I really want more of that kind of music. (Nordic/Finnish myths/cultural core and almost theatrical orchestration with serious Folk inspiration.) Started looking into it and i gotta say, there's some good stuff out there. Some of it even relates the old Nordic Sagas.
Not a prime example, but if you're anything like everyone else. posting actual Nightwish is like admitting to liking Bieber, so...

I'm "ok" with their other stuff, but Imaginaerum really stood far out to me. They just took a Metal concert and turned it into an intimate accoustic concert:

I guess what really makes the new album a major hit with me, is that it's an album that doesn't want to be genre-classified and I'm all for that! I love the diversity and I'm a sucker for orchestrated Metal and theatrical sound-scapes.
TL;DR: They're not shy about experimentation in this one and it makes me long for more.

For me, Symphonics are hit and miss. Usually a miss unless it's combined with something other than Power Metal (does pure power even exist any more?)
