following the book doesn't make it a good movie [editline]25th March 2012[/editline] do you really think that someone like me, who has never read the books, would care about that? It doesn't matter if a movie is about a story that I like, I judge it by what it is

It doesn't matter if a movie is about a story that I like, I judge it by what it is
Ive never read the books. My gf was telling me that they were following the books. So you judge for what it is? Its a movie adaption of a book in which it does a good job following that from what the reviews say and what people say.
I judge it for what it is: its a good movie, but with lots of wasted potential a movie can follow the books and still be shit. this movie may have followed the books, but it could have been 10 times better.

OP updated :)
How?
it had some really, really bad camerawork, the soundtrack wasn't that noticeable, and it's pg-13 (which sort of defeats the point of it)
it had some really, really bad camerawork, the soundtrack wasn't that noticeable, and it's pg-13 (which sort of defeats the point of it)
Suzanne Collins intended these books to be juvenile fiction, so no, toning down the gore does not defeat the point. It's not the same narrating an arrow to the neck than showing it. I'm more fan of the storyline of the books rather than the action so I couldn't care less for the gore.
oh, that sounds ok, then. it DID feel too toned down to me, though
I have to say, I rather enjoyed the movie, it was pretty faithful to the books, unlike some movies. Although during the final chase and fight scene, this is the only thing I could think of:
For some reason I didn't like the books around the time this kind of thread was first made, but since then I've read the books again and liked them. but yeah shaky cam and muted sound really fucked over the action sequences.
I didn't like the final fight scene. [sp]I couldn't tell the difference between Peeta and Kaito(sp?) with all the shaky camera parts. Also, the first fight scene at the Cornucopia was WAY too shaky.[/sp] I did feel a TON of tension at the start of the deathmatch though.
Was anybody else a little disappointed with the Dog Mutants (I refuse to call them mutts)? I always thought of them sorta looking like Worgen from Warcraft, just tending towards quadrapedal running. Not quite [sp]huge pitbulls with human eyes[/sp].

[sp]the mutts were supposed to have the eyes of the dead tributes, and have a lot of fur, instead they were just regular beasts taken straight out of warcraft[/sp]
[sp]the mutts were supposed to have the eyes of the dead tributes, and have a lot of fur, instead they were just regular beasts taken straight out of warcraft[/sp]
that sounds incredibly badass and disturbing
If this does become as big as Twilight
Right well I can't speak for success outside the theater, but this movie just had the 3rd biggest opening weekend of all time, larger than ANY twilight movie, which is especially crazy because it's not even a summer movie nor is it a sequel (no other film in the top 10 for opening weekends is not a sequel, and the 2nd highest non sequel movie is fucking spiderman)
Actually from Catching fire and onwards, she's less of a heroine to be more like a puppet. [sp]district 13 uses her as the image of the revolution against her will and she just wants it all over so that she can go back to what she had before the games, and then has an emotional breakdown after losing her sister, the one she cared the most about.[/sp] [editline]25th March 2012[/editline] I'm gonna do a proper OP y'all
I know, but that's the reason [sp]why she kills Coin at the end of Mockingjay over Snow, because she realized that the real threat wasn't the capitol after the first revolution - it was now Coin. The story does take a dramatic shift, but at least the first movie jump starts the female heroine role.[/sp] [editline]25th March 2012[/editline]
[sp]the mutts were supposed to have the eyes of the dead tributes, and have a lot of fur, instead they were just regular beasts taken straight out of warcraft[/sp]
The only problem would have been the fact that they'd have to explain those as well, but I guess they could have done that in the gamemaker area.
I'm actually surprised at how famous this movie is becoming

[editline]25th March 2012[/editline] is there anything else I should add to the OP?
[sp]I lol'd at the fact that snow died then and there from laughter (and possibly people stepping over him to assist Coin[/sp]
[sp]I'm happy that the movie showed him picking the flowers - perfect way to start Catching Fire. I wonder if we'll hear about the flower-blood-breath.][/sp]
I enjoyed the movie immensely. I'd give it a 9/10 and definitely would watch again. Summary of my few issues with it: [sp] -Shaky Camera during all of the fighting and action. The beginning of the event was just a clusterfuck of blood. I didn't even notice that she didn't get the bow. -Relationship with Gale was underplayed, felt like a friendship and not what it was in the book. -She got the mockingjay pin from the old lady in the black market, not the mayor's daughter. I completely understand why they did this, but it was still unlike the book -Tribute's eyes on the mutts weren't shown As a side note, Funniest part of the movie was when Peeta grabbed Katniss while dressed as a rock. "Oh god help me katniss I'm turning into a rock"[/sp] Anyway, great movie, everyone should see it, even if you haven't read the book.
No one I know wants to watch this with me, so I guess I'll just wait for the Blu-ray.
[sp]-Relationship with Gale was underplayed, felt like a friendship and not what it was in the book.[/sp]
yeah, even though I didnt read the book, I knew what their intention was. could have been better on that point
[sp]As a side note, Funniest part of the movie was when Peeta grabbed Katniss while dressed as a rock. "Oh god help me katniss I'm turning into a rock"[/sp]
that was funny as fuck
No one I know wants to watch this with me, so I guess I'll just wait for the Blu-ray.
Just go yourself?
I went by myself :( Also anyone who read the books think that the relationship with rue and katniss was rushed in the film? one second she wakes from tracker jacker venom the next she's telling rue to light fires to attract the careers...?
My favorite part was when [sp]all the black people where in district 11(farming)[/sp]
I thought it was okay, but I never really felt immersed and never felt any of them were in danger. Could be because it was shaking the entire movie and you barely see any blood. The whole movie just felt too clean and straight forward, could have had more character development as well. I give it a 6 / 10.
One thing I didn't really like much was the mentor for district 12 in the beginning. His attitude just took a complete 180, one minute he's pretty much telling them to fuck off the next hes giving them advice.

They left out the part where he says "don't bug me about my drinking and I'll stay sober enough to keep you guys alive."
