I know a kid from South Africa who speaks Afrikaans, could you technically understand him if he spoke in Afrikaans? Like, wouldn't it be somewhat like an American speaking with someone from the UK?

(I speak a sub-dialect daily that uses a lot of old Dutch words.) Borrowed words will fuck things up (zulu etc). Dutch: De kat krapt de krullen van de trap. Afrikaans: Die kat krapt die krul van die trap. English: The cat scratches the curls off the stairs. Dutch: Brammetje, het brave broertje van het brouwende Brechtje, bracht lopende op een brede brug, in een bronsbruin broekje, een bril, een brief en een brokje bruin brood naar Breukelen. Afrikaans: Brammetje, die brave boetie van die brouwende Brechtje, het lopende op 'n wye brug, in' n bronsbruin broekje, 'n bril,' n brief en 'n brokje bruin brood na Breukelen. English: Brammetje, the obedient little brother of the brewing Brechtje, brought in a bronze brown pants, glasses, a letter and a piece of brown bread, towards Breukelen while walking on the broad bridge

It looks like they just conjugate stuff differently, but yeah, I could see where it could be weird.
